Why is my gearbox hard to get into gear?

  • Resting your hand on the gear lever while driving — The weight is enough to hold the selector against the synchro ring inside the box, which wears it continuously. It is a genuine cause of premature synchro failure and it costs nothing to stop.

Cause: Clutch not fully disengaging — hydraulics, a stretched cable or a worn clutch — Fix: Check the fluid level first. Selecting second instead of first as a temporary measure sometimes works, but this needs fixing rather than working around.
