The confusing part is that a clutch can behave normally around town for months while already slipping under load, so people notice it first on a motorway slip road or a steep hill.

- Do the high-gear load test.On a clear road, in fourth or fifth at around 30 mph, accelerate firmly. In a healthy car the revs and the speed rise together. If the revs shoot up while the speed barely changes, the clutch is slipping. This is the definitive test and takes seconds.
- Notice where the biting point is.As friction material wears, the biting point typically rises — the pedal has to come further up before the car moves. A gradual change over years is normal wear; a noticeable change over weeks is worth investigating.
- Watch for slip specifically on hills and when loaded.Pulling away uphill, towing, or a fully loaded car puts the most torque through the clutch. A clutch that is fine empty on the flat and slips on a hill with four people aboard is a clutch at the end of its life.
- Smell for it.A slipping clutch produces a distinctive acrid, burning smell, most obvious after hill starts or after a long queue on an incline. Occasionally that smell is from a genuinely difficult manoeuvre; regularly, it is wear.
- Separate slip from a hydraulic or cable problem.A pedal that goes soft, sinks to the floor, or will not disengage the gears is not a worn clutch — it is the mechanism that operates it. That is often a much cheaper repair, so it is worth distinguishing before assuming the worst.
- Consider the driving habits that shorten clutch life.Resting a foot on the pedal, holding the car on a hill with the clutch instead of the brake, riding the clutch in slow traffic, and pulling away at high revs. All of them are habit rather than necessity and all of them measurably shorten clutch life.
Common mistakes
- Holding a car on a hill with the clutch — It is the single most destructive thing you can do to a clutch, and the handbrake or a footbrake does the job with no wear at all.
- Assuming any clutch problem means a full replacement — Hydraulics, cables, mounts and adjustment all produce clutch-like symptoms and are far cheaper. Get the diagnosis before accepting the quote.
If it doesn't work
Revs rise but speed does not, in high gear
Cause: Worn clutch friction plate — Fix: Book it in. A slipping clutch does not recover and eventually leaves you unable to move at all, usually at the worst moment.
Pedal feels soft or goes to the floor and stays
Cause: Hydraulic fault — master or slave cylinder, or a leak — Fix: Have it looked at promptly. This is a different, usually cheaper repair, and it can leave you unable to select gears.
Judder as you pull away
Cause: Contaminated or unevenly worn clutch, or worn engine or gearbox mounts — Fix: Needs diagnosis. Judder alone is not always the clutch, and mounts are far cheaper to replace.
Gears crunch going into first or reverse
Cause: Clutch not fully disengaging, or worn synchromesh — Fix: Check the pedal travel and any adjustment first. Crunching into reverse specifically is often just a lack of synchromesh on that gear and is normal on some cars if you do not pause.
Biting point suddenly very low with a light pedal
Cause: Cable or hydraulic adjustment, or a failing release bearing — Fix: Have it inspected. A sudden change in feel is more likely mechanism than wear, since wear is gradual.
Questions people ask
How long should a clutch last?
It depends almost entirely on use rather than age. A motorway car can go well over 100,000 miles on its original clutch; a car doing city traffic in the hands of someone who rides the pedal can need one at a third of that. There is no interval, only symptoms.
Is a clutch covered by a warranty?
Usually not, because it is classed as a wear item like brake pads and tyres. Some manufacturer warranties cover it briefly, and some used-car warranties exclude it explicitly. Check the wording rather than assuming.
Does an automatic have the same problem?
A traditional torque-converter automatic does not have a clutch in this sense, though it can develop slip in the transmission. A dual-clutch automatic does have clutches, and they do wear — the symptoms are similar but the diagnosis is a specialist job.
