How do I work out what a noise from my car means?
Noises are identified by what makes them change, not by how they sound. A structured way to work out whether a knock, whine, click or rumble is speed-related, engine-related, brake-related or suspension-related.

Short answer
Ask one question first: does the noise change with road speed, with engine speed, or with neither? A noise that rises with road speed and continues in neutral is wheels, tyres or bearings. A noise that follows the rev counter regardless of speed is the engine or something it drives. A noise that only appears over bumps or on turns is suspension or steering.
Describing a car noise over the phone is famously useless, and it is not because people lack vocabulary. It is because the sound itself is the least diagnostic part. What identifies a noise is the conditions that change it: speed, revs, load, temperature, steering angle, braking, and whether it happens over bumps. A driver who arrives at a garage able to say "it rises with road speed, gets louder when I steer left, and is unaffected by braking" has effectively diagnosed a wheel bearing already.

- Find out whether it tracks road speed or engine speed.The decisive test: on a quiet road, get the noise going, then in a manual dip the clutch and coast, or in an automatic shift to neutral briefly where safe. If the noise continues unchanged, it follows road speed — wheels, tyres, bearings, driveshafts. If it drops away with the revs, it is engine-driven.
- Try changing the steering load.A gentle sweep left then right at a steady speed loads each side of the car in turn. A wheel bearing usually gets louder when the car leans onto it, so a rumble that grows on left-hand bends often points at the right-hand bearing.
- Separate braking noises from everything else.If it happens only when the brake pedal is pressed, it is the brakes. If it happens all the time and disappears under braking, that is also brakes — a worn pad or loose shim rattling until it is clamped.
- Test over bumps and at low speed.Clonks over speed bumps at walking pace, especially over one wheel at a time, point at suspension links, drop links, bushes or a top mount. These are quiet on smooth roads, which is why people only notice them on a particular street.
- Note whether it is there when cold and goes away.A rattle for a second or two on cold start, a squeal that stops after five minutes, a knock only until the oil warms — all of these are strong clues. Cold-only noises point at belts, tensioners, chain tensioners and exhaust heat shields.
- Count the noise against wheel rotation if you can.A regular click or thump whose rhythm speeds up exactly with the car — roughly once per wheel revolution — is something on or in a wheel or tyre: a stone in the tread, a nail, a bulge, or a damaged driveshaft joint. It is one of the easiest to confirm and often the easiest to fix.
- Record it on a phone, and write down the conditions.A short clip with the window down, plus a note saying speed, gear, revs and what makes it change, is worth more to a garage than any description. It also stops the classic problem of the noise not happening on the test drive.
Common mistakes
- Turning the radio up — Obvious, common, and how cheap noises become expensive ones. Most of the noises on this list are inexpensive if caught early and much less so once something has failed.
- Describing the sound instead of the conditions — Two people describe the same bearing as a hum, a drone, a growl and a roar. The conditions that change it are objective and lead straight to the system.
If it doesn't work
Droning rumble that rises with road speed and changes on bends
Cause: Wheel bearing — Fix: Get it checked promptly. Bearings deteriorate progressively and, rarely, seize. It is also an MOT failure once there is play.
Regular click that speeds up with the car, worse on full lock
Cause: Constant velocity joint on a driveshaft, usually with a split rubber boot — Fix: Garage job. If caught while only the boot has split it can sometimes be repacked and re-booted cheaply; once the joint is clicking, it needs replacing.
Squeal from the engine bay on cold start, fading as it warms
Cause: Glazed or slipping auxiliary belt — Fix: Have the belt and tensioner inspected. That belt commonly drives the alternator, water pump and power steering, so it is not a cosmetic noise.
Rattle over bumps, worse at low speed
Cause: Anti-roll bar drop links, worn bushes, or a loose exhaust heat shield — Fix: Heat shields are cheap and common; drop links are cheap and common too. Both are ordinary garage work and neither should be expensive.
Whine that changes with steering effort
Cause: Power steering pump low on fluid or wearing — Fix: Check the fluid level. A pump run low gets noisy and then fails.
Knocking from the engine that follows revs and got worse over weeks
Cause: Potentially serious internal wear — Fix: Stop driving and have it diagnosed. A deep rhythmic knock that tracks revs is one of the few noises worth treating as an emergency.
Questions people ask
Is it safe to keep driving with a noisy wheel bearing?
For a short period at moderate speed while you get it booked in, generally yes, but the noise means it is already worn and it will get worse. It is not a noise to live with for months.
The noise stops when I brake. Does that mean the brakes are fine?
It usually means the opposite — that light clamping pressure is silencing a component that rattles when free. A worn pad, a missing anti-rattle shim or a loose caliper all behave this way.
Why can the garage never hear it?
Because most noises need specific conditions: a particular speed, a cold engine, a certain surface. Recording it and writing down the exact conditions solves this, and it is entirely reasonable to ask to go on the test drive with them.
