Why does my steering wheel shake at speed?

Wheel balance, warped discs, a bulging tyre and worn suspension all produce a shake. The speed and conditions at which it happens tell you which one you have.

Short answer

A vibration that appears in a narrow band of speed — often somewhere around 50 to 70 mph — and is there whether you brake or not is almost always wheel balance. A shake felt only when braking, which gets stronger the harder you brake, is the discs. A vibration that arrived overnight, especially after hitting something, means stop and check the tyres and wheels for damage.

A wheel and tyre assembly spinning at motorway speed turns roughly fifteen times a second, so a very small imbalance — a few grams in the wrong place, or a lost balance weight — becomes a force you can feel in the steering. That is why balance problems appear at a particular speed range and fade above and below it: you are driving through the resonant frequency of the steering and suspension. Understanding that one fact separates the common, cheap cause from the ones that matter more.

A vibration that appeared suddenly, that is getting worse, or that comes with a knocking noise or a change in how the car steers should be treated as urgent — a wheel or suspension component may be loose or damaged. Reduce speed, avoid motorways, and have the car inspected before driving it further.

Step by step

  1. Note the speed at which it happens, and whether it goes away again.A shake that builds from about 50 mph, peaks, and then smooths out again higher up is the signature of an out-of-balance wheel. A vibration that simply grows with speed and never smooths points elsewhere.
  2. Work out where you feel it.Through the steering wheel usually means a front wheel. Through the seat and floor usually means a rear one. That halves the search before anyone touches the car.
  3. Test under braking separately.Brake gently from a moderate speed on a clear road. A pulsing you feel through the pedal and steering only while braking, which gets worse the harder you brake, is disc distortion or uneven pad deposits, not balance.
  4. Look carefully at all four tyres.You are looking for a bulge in the sidewall, a flat spot, uneven wear, or a missing balance weight — the small lead or steel blocks clipped to the rim edge or stuck inside it. A sidewall bulge means that tyre must be replaced before the car is driven at speed.
  5. Consider what changed.New tyres fitted recently, a wheel taken off and refitted, a kerb strike or a deep pothole. A vibration dating from a specific event is usually a direct consequence of it.
  6. Ask for balancing rather than alignment if the pattern fits.Balancing and alignment are different jobs. Balancing corrects weight distribution around the wheel and cures speed-band vibration. Alignment corrects the angles the wheels sit at and cures pulling and uneven wear. Asking for the right one saves a wasted appointment.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a shake is always alignment — Alignment does not cause speed-band vibration; it causes pulling and uneven wear. Paying for the wrong job is the usual outcome of guessing.
  • Ignoring a sidewall bulge because the tyre holds air — A bulge is a broken internal cord. The tyre is holding pressure on the remaining structure and is a genuine blow-out risk at speed.

If it doesn't work

Started after new tyres

Cause: Balance weights not applied correctly, or one tyre poorly seated on the rim — Fix: Go back to the fitter. Rebalancing is normally free after a fitting, and a badly seated tyre needs breaking down and refitting.

Vibration under braking, worse from higher speeds

Cause: Disc distortion or uneven friction deposits — Fix: Have the discs measured. Sometimes they can be skimmed; often replacement is the sensible answer, and it usually needs doing in axle pairs.

Appeared after hitting a pothole

Cause: A buckled wheel, a shifted balance weight, or internal tyre damage — Fix: Have the wheel and tyre inspected off the car. Alloy wheels can be buckled enough to vibrate without looking obviously bent.

Only at low speed, with a wobble you can see

Cause: A tyre with a broken belt or a flat spot — Fix: Replace the tyre. This is not a balancing problem and no amount of weights will cure it.

Worst on the first few miles of a cold morning and then improves

Cause: Flat-spotted tyres from standing — Fix: Common on a car left parked for weeks, and it usually disappears as the tyres warm and regain shape. If it persists after a decent drive, look further.

Vibration with a knocking or clonking noise

Cause: Worn ball joint, track rod end or wheel bearing — Fix: Stop driving at speed and have it inspected. This combination is the one to take seriously.

Questions people ask

How much does wheel balancing cost, and is it worth doing all four?

It is one of the cheapest jobs a tyre place does, and doing all four at once is usually only marginally more than doing one. If you cannot tell whether the vibration is front or rear, all four is the pragmatic answer.

Can a vibration damage anything if I leave it?

Yes. Sustained vibration accelerates wear in wheel bearings, suspension bushes and steering joints, so a cheap imbalance eventually creates expensive wear.

Why did the vibration come back a few months after balancing?

A weight can be thrown off, particularly stick-on weights in cold, salty conditions. Mud packed inside a wheel rim does the same thing, and so does a tyre wearing unevenly because of an alignment problem that was never addressed.
