There is a puddle under my car — what is it?

How to tell water from oil from coolant from brake fluid by colour, position and feel, and which of them mean stop driving now.

Short answer

Clear water dripping from under the middle of the car on a warm day is almost always air-conditioning condensate and is completely normal. Anything coloured — bright pink, green, orange or blue is usually coolant; brown or black and oily is engine oil; red and thin is often transmission or power-steering fluid — needs identifying. Clear-to-straw-coloured, slightly oily fluid near a wheel or the pedal box may be brake fluid, and that means stop driving.

Two pieces of information identify almost every leak: what the fluid looks and feels like, and where under the car it lands. That second half is what people usually skip. A drip at the front centre, behind the engine, at a wheel, or under the passenger footwell each points at a different system, and putting a sheet of clean cardboard under the car overnight turns a vague damp patch into a legible map of position, colour and quantity.

Do not taste or handle unknown fluids, and keep coolant away from children and animals — ethylene glycol is sweet-tasting and seriously toxic if swallowed. Clean any coolant spill on a driveway immediately. If you smell petrol or see fuel dripping, do not start the engine; move away from the car and call for help.
Where a leak lands under a car, and what that suggests

Step by step

  1. Rule out air-conditioning condensate first.Clear, odourless water dripping from roughly the middle of the car after driving with the air conditioning or demister on is condensation off the evaporator, running out of a drain tube exactly as designed. It is the single most common "leak" and it is not a leak.
  2. Put clean cardboard under the car overnight.Position tells you as much as colour. Mark which way round the cardboard was, and note whether the drips are at the front, under the engine, mid-car, or beside a wheel.
  3. Judge the colour and the feel.Coolant is brightly dyed — pink, orange, green or blue — feels slightly slippery and smells faintly sweet. Engine oil is light brown when fresh and black when used, and feels genuinely oily. Gearbox and power-steering fluid is often red or light brown and thinner. Brake fluid is clear to straw-coloured, feels slightly slimy, and strips paint.
  4. Check the matching reservoir level rather than only the puddle.A leak that has not dropped a level much is small and can wait for a booked appointment. A reservoir noticeably down is active and needs attention now. Check when cold and on level ground.
  5. Treat brake fluid and fuel as immediate stops.Any fluid near a wheel or the pedal box that could be brake fluid, and any smell of petrol or diesel with wetness underneath, ends the diagnosis. Do not drive; arrange recovery.
  6. Look above the puddle, not just at it.Fluid runs along the underside of a car before it drops, so the wet spot on the ground is often not below the source. A torch and a look at where the wetness starts, higher up, saves the garage time and you money.
  7. Photograph it before you clean it up.Colour, position and quantity are hard to describe from memory and easy to photograph. It is the most useful thing you can hand a garage.

Common mistakes

  • Dismissing any clear liquid as condensation — Brake fluid is nearly clear when new. Position is the tie-breaker: air-con condensate comes from the middle of the car, brake fluid from a wheel or the pedal box.
  • Hosing coolant off a driveway into a gutter — It is toxic to pets and wildlife and sweet enough that they will drink it. Soak it up with cat litter or sand and dispose of it as hazardous waste at the tip.

If it doesn't work

Small dark drip under the engine, level barely moves

Cause: A weeping seal, sump gasket or filter — common on older cars — Fix: Not urgent, but worth mentioning at the next service and worth watching. Oil dripping onto a hot exhaust is a fire risk and a smell you will notice.

Coloured fluid at the front, and the temperature gauge has been higher than usual

Cause: Coolant leak from a radiator, hose or the water pump — Fix: Check the level cold, top up correctly, and get it looked at before it empties. Do not keep topping it up indefinitely — a leak that needs weekly attention will strand you.

Clear-to-straw fluid at a wheel, and the brake pedal feels different

Cause: Brake fluid leak from a caliper, hose or wheel cylinder — Fix: Stop driving and have it recovered. Brake fluid loss is the failure mode where the pedal goes to the floor without warning.

Red fluid, and the steering has gone heavy or whines

Cause: Power steering fluid leak — Fix: Top up if the reservoir is low, but get it repaired promptly. Running a power steering pump dry destroys it quickly.

Water dripping from the exhaust tailpipe

Cause: Normal combustion condensate, especially on short cold trips — Fix: Nothing to do. Petrol burns to carbon dioxide and water, and on a cold exhaust that water condenses and drips.

Questions people ask

How much dripping is normal?

Air-conditioning condensate can be a surprising amount — a visible puddle after a hot journey is normal. For anything else the honest answer is none. A very old car may weep a little oil, but a fluid that leaves a mark on the drive every day is losing enough to matter.

Can I use a leak-stop additive?

They occasionally get a very old car through a short period, and they can also block a heater matrix or radiator core and turn a leak into an overheat. As a route to a proper repair they are a poor bargain on anything you rely on.

Nothing is leaking but I can smell oil after a drive. Why?

A leak onto a hot exhaust burns off rather than dripping, so there is nothing on the ground. That is worth investigating, both because the leak is real and because oil on a hot manifold is a genuine fire risk.
