What do I do if my car starts to overheat?

What the temperature gauge climbing actually means, the one thing to do immediately, and how to tell a top-up-and-carry-on from a stop-and-call-recovery.

Short answer

Turn the heater to maximum heat and maximum fan straight away — it is a second radiator and buys you time — then pull over somewhere safe and switch the engine off. Do not open the expansion tank while it is hot. If the gauge is in the red, there is steam, or the car has lost coolant with no obvious leak, do not drive it: an overheated engine can be destroyed in minutes.

An engine turns most of its fuel into heat, and the cooling system's job is to move that heat into the air fast enough. Overheating means that transfer has stopped working — no coolant, no circulation, or no airflow. The reason it needs urgency is that aluminium engines distort quickly when they get too hot, and a warped cylinder head or a blown head gasket turns a cheap fix into a very expensive one. The gap between "gauge slightly high" and "engine ruined" can be a few miles.

Safety

Never open a radiator cap or expansion tank on a hot engine. The system is pressurised and the coolant is above its normal boiling point, so releasing the cap causes it to flash to steam and spray scalding liquid. Wait until the engine is cold to the touch, which takes far longer than people expect. If you see steam, get everyone out of the car and away from it.

Step by step

  1. Turn the heater fully hot with the fan on maximum, immediately.The heater matrix is a small radiator fed by engine coolant. Running it flat out genuinely pulls heat out of the engine. It is unpleasant in summer and it is the single most useful thing you can do in the first thirty seconds.
  2. Switch off the air conditioning and reduce load.Air conditioning adds heat at the front of the car and load to the engine. Ease off the accelerator, and if you are stuck in traffic, leaving a gap and rolling rather than sitting still helps airflow.
  3. Pull over safely and switch the engine off.Once stopped, running the engine no longer moves air through the radiator at any useful rate. Switching off stops heat being produced, which matters more than keeping the water pump turning.
  4. Open the bonnet only if there is no steam, and stand back.Releasing the catch and letting the bonnet rest on the safety latch helps heat escape. If there is steam or a smell of hot coolant, leave it and wait.
  5. Wait — properly — before touching the cap.Cold to the touch on the top hose is the test, and that is typically half an hour or more, not five minutes. Then open the expansion tank cap slowly, with a cloth over it, turned to its first stop to release pressure before removing.
  6. Look for the obvious causes while it cools.A puddle or drips under the front, a wet or steaming hose, an expansion tank that is empty, or a radiator packed with leaves and dead insects. Also check whether the cooling fan was running when you stopped — a failed fan produces overheating that only appears in traffic and disappears at speed.
  7. Decide honestly whether to drive on.If the level was slightly low, you have topped it up correctly, there is no visible leak and the temperature stays normal on a short careful test, driving to a garage is reasonable. If it emptied again, if it overheated quickly, or if there is white smoke from the exhaust or mayonnaise under the oil cap, call recovery.

Common mistakes

  • Pouring cold water into a hot engine — The thermal shock can crack a hot cylinder head or block. If you must top up in an emergency, wait for it to cool and add slowly with the engine off.
  • Driving "just a few more miles" to somewhere convenient — This is where most destroyed engines come from. The cost of a recovery is trivial next to a head gasket, and vastly less than a replacement engine.

If it doesn't work

Temperature rises in traffic and falls again once moving

Cause: Cooling fan not working — Fix: At speed the airflow does the job; stationary the fan has to. Have the fan, its relay and its sensor checked — this is a classic and cheap-to-fix pattern.

Coolant level keeps dropping with no visible leak

Cause: An internal leak, often a head gasket, or a pinhole that only leaks under pressure — Fix: Stop driving it. Coolant going into the combustion chamber shows as sweet-smelling white smoke and is the expensive version of this fault.

Heater blows cold while the engine is hot

Cause: Low coolant or an airlock, so nothing is circulating through the matrix — Fix: This is a strong sign the system is short of coolant. It also removes your emergency cooling option, so treat it as a stop.

Gauge normal but a warning light or message appears

Cause: Many modern cars have damped gauges that hide the truth until the message triggers — Fix: Trust the message over the needle. Some manufacturers deliberately hold the needle at the middle across a wide range.

Overheats only when towing or on long climbs

Cause: Marginal cooling capacity, blocked radiator fins, or old coolant — Fix: Have the radiator cleaned externally and the coolant condition and concentration checked. Old coolant loses its corrosion inhibitors and its boiling-point advantage.

Questions people ask

Can I top up with plain water?

In a genuine emergency, water gets you to a garage. It is not a fix: proper coolant raises the boiling point, lowers the freezing point and carries corrosion inhibitors that protect the aluminium and the water pump seal. Have the system drained and refilled properly afterwards.

Why did it overheat in cold weather?

Overheating is about heat transfer, not ambient temperature. A stuck thermostat, a failed pump or a blocked system overheats in January as readily as in July. In fact winter adds one more cause: coolant that is too dilute can slush or freeze and stop circulating altogether.

The gauge went up and came straight back down. Do I need to worry?

Once, briefly, on a long climb in hot weather, probably not. A pattern of it is a fault developing. Check the coolant level when cold, and keep an eye on whether the level drops over the following weeks.
