Why does only one of my wireless earbuds work?
One earbud silent is usually the link between the two buds rather than a broken earpiece. The reset that fixes most cases, and how to tell when it is genuinely a charging contact problem.

Short answer
Put both buds in the case, close it, leave it thirty seconds, then remove and reinsert them. If that fails, remove the headphones from your phone's Bluetooth list and factory reset the buds — the documented button hold with both in the case. That fixes most cases, because the fault is normally the pairing between the two buds rather than a dead earpiece.
True wireless earbuds are two independent devices that have to stay paired with each other as well as with your phone. When one goes quiet, the usual cause is that this bud-to-bud link has failed or that one bud never woke up from the case. Both are recoverable, and dismantling the problem in the right order avoids replacing a perfectly good set.
Step by step
- Check the obvious first — volume balance. Both iOS and Android have an audio balance slider in accessibility settings. If it has been dragged fully to one side, one bud goes silent and no amount of resetting will help. This catches more people than it should.
- Reseat both buds in the case.Put both in, close the lid, wait thirty seconds, open and take both out together. This forces a re-sync and resolves a large share of cases.
- Clean the charging contacts.Look at the metal contacts on each bud and in each well of the case. Earwax, lint and pocket debris insulate the contacts so one bud silently never charges. Clean with a dry cotton bud or a soft dry brush, and a wooden cocktail stick for the wells. Never use liquid.
- Check each bud charges.Put one bud in at a time and watch for the charge indication. A bud that shows no charging response with clean contacts has either a dead cell or a contact fault, and that is a hardware problem.
- Forget the headphones on the phone.Go into Bluetooth settings, find the headphones and choose forget or unpair. A stale pairing that only knows about one bud is common and cannot be repaired from the phone side.
- Factory reset the buds.Look up the exact procedure for your model — it is usually both buds in the case with the lid open, then a hold of the case button or the bud touch surfaces for ten to thirty seconds until the lights flash a particular pattern. Then pair fresh.
- Test with a different source device. If both buds work with a different phone, the problem was the pairing. If the same bud is silent everywhere, it is the bud.
- Check the warranty before writing it off.A dead single bud within the warranty period is a valid claim. Some manufacturers also sell individual replacement buds, which is far cheaper than a new set.
If it doesn't work
One bud works alone but not alongside the other
Cause: The bud-to-bud link — Fix: Factory reset both and pair again. This is the standard remedy and it works far more often than people expect.
The same bud always dies first
Cause: That cell has aged more, or the contacts are dirty — Fix: Clean contacts first. If it persists, that bud's battery is degraded — normal after two or three years of daily use and not repairable in most models.
One bud cuts out intermittently rather than being silent
Cause: Interference or body blocking — Fix: One bud is usually the primary and relays to the other in older designs. Move the phone to the same side as the primary bud, or check whether the model uses a newer independent-connection design.
Both work but one is much quieter
Cause: A blocked mesh or earwax filter — Fix: Clean the mesh over the nozzle with a dry soft brush. Many models have replaceable filters, and a blocked one is the single most common cause of a bud that has quietly got worse.
Questions people ask
Can I buy just one replacement earbud?
Several manufacturers sell single buds and single cases through their support channels rather than retail. It is always worth asking before buying a whole new set.
Why do they work fine when I use them one at a time?
Because each bud can connect to the phone directly. When both are out, one has to coordinate with the other, and it is that link that has failed.
Would resetting lose my settings?
It clears pairings and usually the equaliser and control customisations in the app. That is a small price and both are quick to set again.
