Why does my Bluetooth audio sound terrible on calls?
The moment the microphone is used, Bluetooth switches to a completely different mode with a fraction of the quality. Why that happens, and the three ways round it.

Short answer
Bluetooth cannot send high-quality audio and receive microphone audio at the same time on the classic connection. When you join a call the headphones switch from the music mode to a two-way call mode, which sounds dramatically worse. Use the device's own microphone instead of the headset's, or use headphones and a platform that support the newer wide-band or LE Audio modes.
This surprises people who have spent real money on headphones. Music sounds excellent, then a call starts, everything goes muffled and tinny, and the headphones seem broken. They are not. Classic Bluetooth has two entirely separate audio arrangements — one high-quality and one-way for music, one low-quality and two-way for calls — and a call forces the second.

- Confirm the switch is what you are hearing.Play music, note the quality, then start a call or open any app that activates the microphone. If the sound collapses at that exact moment and recovers when the call ends, this is the cause and nothing is faulty.
- Check what is activating the microphone.It is not only calls. Video conferencing, voice assistants, recording apps, and even a web page that has been granted microphone access will trigger it. On a computer, the audio device list often shows the same headphones twice — once as stereo output and once as a headset — and the second entry is the low-quality mode.
- On a computer, select the stereo output and a different microphone.Set the headphones as the output device in their high-quality mode, and set the input to the laptop's built-in microphone or a separate one. That keeps the good audio and still gives you a microphone. It is the single most effective fix.
- On a phone, accept it or change hardware.Phones give far less control. If call quality through headphones matters, the practical options are to use the phone's own microphone with the phone held normally, or to move to headphones and a phone that both support wide-band speech or LE Audio.
- Check for a wide-band speech setting.Some headphones and some platforms support a higher-quality call mode, sometimes labelled HD voice, wide-band speech, or mSBC. Where it exists it is a genuine improvement over the oldest narrow-band mode, though still well below music quality.
- Consider a wired headset for anything that matters.For long meetings or recording, a wired headset or a separate USB microphone sidesteps the whole problem. There is no Bluetooth arrangement that matches it.

- If your headphones sound bad on calls but you never noticed before, check whether a browser tab has quietly kept microphone access. Revoking it restores music quality immediately.
- Noise cancellation often behaves differently in call mode, which adds to the impression that something has broken.
- LE Audio and the LC3 codec are designed specifically to fix this, allowing good quality in both directions at once. It needs support in the headphones, the phone and the operating system, so check all three before buying on that basis.
