Why is the sound behind the picture on my Bluetooth headphones?
Bluetooth audio is always delayed — the question is only by how much. What sets the delay, why video apps hide it and games cannot, and what to do when it genuinely matters.

Short answer
Every Bluetooth connection adds a delay of roughly a tenth to a third of a second while audio is compressed, sent and rebuilt. Video apps compensate by delaying the picture to match, which is why films look fine. Games and live instruments cannot, because the sound has to respond to you. Reducing it means using a low-latency codec supported at both ends, or going wired.
The delay is inherent, not a fault. Audio has to be compressed, packetised, transmitted, buffered against interference and decompressed, and each step costs time. The reason it seems inconsistent is that different apps handle it differently: a streaming video player knows the delay and shifts the picture to match, while a game has no way to shift a picture that depends on what you do next.

- Work out whether it actually matters for what you are doing.Music alone: irrelevant. Streamed video in a proper app: automatically corrected, so also irrelevant. Games, video calls, live monitoring, or watching video in something that does not compensate: this is where it bites.
- Understand the codec in plain terms.A codec is the compression scheme used over the link. The universal fallback, SBC, is the most compatible and typically the slowest. AAC is common on Apple devices. Various proprietary codecs offer higher quality or lower delay, and one family specifically targets low latency for gaming. Both the source and the headphones must support the same one, or they fall back to SBC.
- Check which codec is actually in use.Android exposes this in developer options under Bluetooth audio codec. Headphone companion apps often show it too. On other platforms it is usually not visible, and you have to reason from the specifications.
- Pick a low-latency option if gaming is the use.The reliable answer for gaming is a dedicated wireless headset with its own transmitter dongle, which does not use standard Bluetooth and achieves far lower delay. Bluetooth low-latency codecs help but need matching support at both ends.
- Use the wired option where one exists.Many Bluetooth headphones include a cable. A wired connection removes the delay entirely and is the simplest answer for a games console or an instrument.
- Adjust sync in the app if it offers it.Some media players and most televisions have an audio delay or lip sync setting. Where the platform does not compensate automatically, this lets you correct it by hand.
- Reduce interference before blaming the codec.A congested 2.4 GHz environment forces bigger buffers and more retries, which increases delay and causes stutter. Interference is a more common cause of variable lag than codec choice.

Lag varies from minute to minute
Cause: Interference forcing larger buffers — Fix: Move away from the router and microwave, and reduce 2.4 GHz congestion. Consistent lag is the codec; variable lag is the environment.
Worse on the laptop than the phone
Cause: The laptop is falling back to the basic codec — Fix: Check the codec in use if the platform allows. Updating the Bluetooth driver on a laptop sometimes restores a better codec.
Lip sync is off on the television only
Cause: The television is not compensating for the wireless path — Fix: Use the television's own audio delay setting to shift the sound back into line.
Questions people ask
Which codec has the lowest delay?
A codec designed for low latency, in a headset and source that both support it, is the lowest you will get over standard Bluetooth. The universal fallback is the slowest. Neither eliminates delay — they reduce it.
Do expensive headphones have less delay?
Not necessarily. Price buys sound quality and noise cancellation far more than it buys low latency. Check the codec support specifically.
Does the delay affect voice calls?
Less, because call mode uses a different and much lighter arrangement. That is why calls feel responsive even though they sound worse.
