Why does my electric car have a 12V battery, and what happens when it dies?
Why a car with a huge traction battery still fails because of a small conventional one, the symptoms it produces, and what you can and cannot do about it at the roadside.

Short answer
An electric car still has an ordinary 12V battery, because everything that is not the motor — computers, lights, locks, and the contactors that connect the traction battery — runs at 12 volts. If it goes flat, the car cannot close those contactors, so a vehicle with a fully charged traction battery becomes completely immobile. The symptoms look like total electrical failure, and the fix is as on any car: charge or jump the 12V battery at the points the handbook specifies.
This catches out almost every new EV owner at some point and it seems absurd until you see why. The traction battery sits behind large contactors — heavy-duty relays that physically isolate several hundred volts from the rest of the car whenever it is switched off. Those contactors are held closed by a 12V circuit. So are the door locks, the dashboard, the body computers, the lights and the charging controller. If the 12V supply fails, nothing can close the contactors, which means the enormous battery under the floor is electrically disconnected and completely unavailable — including for charging itself. A hundred kilowatt-hours sits there, unreachable, because a small lead-acid battery has gone flat.

- Recognise the symptoms.Total or near-total electrical failure. The car will not wake, the doors may not unlock with the fob, the dashboard is dead or flickering, and there may be a spray of warning messages before it dies. On many cars there is an intermediate stage of odd, unrelated faults appearing over several days.
- Know why it happens on EVs specifically.The 12V battery on an EV is often physically small, because it is not required to crank an engine. It is charged from the traction battery through a DC-to-DC converter rather than by an alternator, and on many cars that converter only runs when the car is on or charging. A car left standing for weeks, or used only for very short trips, can discharge it.
- Find where it lives on your car.It is not always under the bonnet. Depending on the model it may be in the boot, under the boot floor, under a seat or in a wheel arch. Find it before you need it, and find the manufacturer's designated jump points, which on many EVs are remote terminals under the bonnet rather than the battery itself.
- Jump or charge it exactly as on any car.A 12V jump pack or jump leads from another vehicle, connected to the points the handbook specifies, wakes the car and lets the contactors close. Once the car is on, its DC-to-DC converter charges the 12V battery from the traction pack. Never connect anything to the high-voltage system.
- Do not use an EV to jump start another car.Most manufacturers prohibit it. The DC-to-DC converter is not designed to supply the current an engine starter draws and can be damaged. Check the handbook — a few permit it, most do not.
- Understand what happens if it dies while the car is locked.You may not be able to open the car with the fob. Almost every EV has a mechanical key blade and a hidden lock cylinder, and many have an external access point for jumping the 12V system with the bonnet shut. This is worth reading about in advance, because the alternative is a recovery call for a car that will not open.
- Keep it healthy the way you would any 12V battery.Regular use, and a maintenance charger if the car stands for long periods. Leaving an EV plugged in helps on many models, because the car periodically wakes and tops up the 12V battery from the traction pack. Check the handbook — behaviour varies considerably.
- Have it replaced with the right type.Many EVs use AGM batteries and some use lithium 12V batteries, which need a compatible charger and a specific replacement. Fitting the wrong type causes charging faults. On some cars the new battery must also be registered with a diagnostic tool.
- Treat repeat failures as a fault to diagnose.A 12V battery that goes flat repeatedly on an EV usually means a parasitic drain from a module that is not going to sleep, or a converter fault. It is a known issue on several models and is often addressed by a software update, so ask the dealer whether one applies.
Common mistakes
- Assuming an electric car cannot have a flat battery — It has two batteries and the small one fails far more often than the large one. It is one of the most common EV breakdown call-outs and it strands a car with plenty of range remaining.
- Connecting jump leads anywhere other than the specified points — EV electrical architecture varies and the designated terminals exist for a reason. Connecting elsewhere risks damaging expensive modules, and anything orange is lethal.
If it doesn't work
Car completely dead with a full traction battery
Cause: Flat 12V battery preventing the contactors closing — Fix: Jump or charge the 12V battery at the manufacturer's designated points. The car will then start normally and recharge it from the traction pack.
Random unrelated warnings for a few days, then failure
Cause: 12V voltage falling — modern cars produce nonsense warnings when it does — Fix: Have the 12V battery tested. Chasing each warning individually is a classic and expensive detour.
Car will not charge and shows a charging fault
Cause: The charging controller runs on 12V and cannot operate — Fix: Same fix. An EV with a flat 12V battery cannot charge itself out of the problem, which is what makes it so counter-intuitive.
Fob will not unlock the car
Cause: No 12V power to the locking system — Fix: Use the mechanical key blade hidden in the fob and the lock cylinder, usually under a cap on the driver's door handle. Locate both before you need them.
Fails repeatedly every few weeks
Cause: Parasitic drain, a failing battery, or a converter fault — Fix: Ask the dealer whether a software update addresses it — several manufacturers have issued them for exactly this. Otherwise it needs proper diagnosis rather than another battery.
New 12V battery and the fault persists
Cause: Wrong type, not registered, or the underlying drain unaddressed — Fix: Confirm the correct specification and whether registration is required. AGM and lithium 12V batteries are not interchangeable with ordinary lead-acid ones.

Can I jump start an electric car?
You can jump the 12V system, exactly as on any car, using the manufacturer's designated points. You cannot jump start the high-voltage traction battery, and there is no equivalent procedure — a flat traction battery needs a charger or recovery.
How long does an EV 12V battery last?
Broadly similar to a conventional car battery, and on some models noticeably less, because they are small and are cycled by modules that stay awake. Several manufacturers have issued software updates to reduce standby drain, so keeping the car's software current genuinely helps.
