How do I charge a car battery at home properly?
Why a short drive does not recharge a flat battery, what a smart charger does that an old one does not, and how to keep a car that sits unused from killing its own battery.

Short answer
An alternator is a top-up device, not a charger — it replaces what starting used and runs the car, and it will not properly refill a deeply discharged battery no matter how far you drive. A modern smart charger left connected for several hours or overnight will, and it does it in stages that an old constant-current charger cannot. Match the charger's mode to the battery type: AGM and EFB batteries in stop-start cars need the right setting.
There is a persistent belief that a flat battery just needs a good run. It comes from an era of simpler cars and larger alternators, and it does not survive contact with a modern one. Starting an engine takes a large slug of energy out in a few seconds. An alternator gives it back slowly, while also feeding heated seats, a heated screen, lights, wipers and a car full of computers — and modern charging systems deliberately reduce output at times to save fuel. A twenty-minute trip to the shops in December can easily take more out than it puts back, which is exactly why cars that only do short journeys die in winter.

Step by step
- Work out which battery type you have.Look at the label on the top. Standard flooded lead-acid, EFB, AGM and, on a few cars, lithium all want different charging profiles. AGM in particular needs a slightly different voltage, and most decent chargers have a switch for it. Getting this wrong shortens the battery's life.
- Decide whether to charge in the car or out of it.In the car is easier and avoids losing radio codes and settings, and modern smart chargers are safe to use that way on almost all vehicles. Some manufacturers ask you to connect the negative lead to a designated earth point on the body rather than directly to the negative terminal, so the battery sensor still sees the current — check the handbook.
- Connect in the right order, charger off.Red clamp to the positive terminal first, black clamp to the negative terminal or the specified earth point second. Then switch the charger on at the mains. Reverse that order to disconnect: charger off first, then black, then red.
- Choose a smart charger over an old-fashioned one.A smart or multi-stage charger tests the battery, applies a bulk charge, then an absorption stage, then holds it at a float voltage indefinitely without cooking it. An old unregulated charger left on overnight boils the electrolyte and damages the battery, which is why the advice used to be to watch it.
- Allow real time.A four-amp charger putting energy back into a moderately flat car battery is a job of several hours, not one. Overnight is the normal answer. Rushing it with a high-current setting heats the battery and shortens its life.
- Watch what the charger reports.Most smart chargers show a fault or refuse to start on a battery that is too far gone or has a shorted cell. That refusal is useful information — it means replacement rather than charging.
- Use a maintenance charger for a car that sits.A car left for weeks — a second car, a classic, a camper over winter — is best left on a maintenance or trickle setting, which holds the battery full without overcharging. This is the single most effective way to make a battery last, and it prevents the sulphation that kills batteries left flat.
- Get it tested afterwards if it went completely flat.A lead-acid battery that has been fully discharged, especially if it stayed that way for days, often never recovers its full capacity. Charging it tells you it takes a charge; a conductance test tells you whether it can still deliver current on a cold morning.
Common mistakes
- Believing a drive to the shops will fix a flat battery — Starting takes far more out than a short cold trip puts back. Cars that do only short journeys are on a slow downward ratchet all winter, and the day they will not start is the end of that process, not a sudden failure.
- Leaving an old unregulated charger connected overnight — It has no way to stop. It will keep pushing current into a full battery until the electrolyte boils off and the plates are damaged. A modern smart charger is inexpensive and removes the risk entirely.
If it doesn't work
Charger says the battery is full within minutes
Cause: Usually a battery with a failed cell, showing high voltage but no capacity — Fix: Have it load tested. Surface voltage is a poor guide; a battery can read healthy and be incapable of turning an engine.
Battery charges fine but is flat again in days
Cause: A parasitic drain, or the battery no longer holds charge — Fix: A free battery test separates the two. If the battery is good, ask a garage to check for a drain — dashcams, trackers, aftermarket alarms and a boot light that never goes off are the usual suspects.
Charger will not start on a very flat battery
Cause: Many smart chargers refuse below a voltage threshold as a safety feature — Fix: Some have a recovery or supply mode for exactly this. Otherwise a brief boost from a jump pack can raise the voltage enough for the charger to engage.
Battery gets warm and smells of rotten eggs while charging
Cause: Overcharging or an internal short — the smell is hydrogen sulphide — Fix: Disconnect immediately, ventilate the area and do not go near it with anything that sparks. That battery is finished and needs proper disposal.
Car has electrical oddities after charging
Cause: Settings lost, or adaptations reset if the battery was disconnected — Fix: Radio codes, seat memories and clock settings are the usual casualties. Some cars also need window and sunroof positions re-initialised, which the handbook covers.

Can I leave a smart charger connected for weeks?
That is exactly what a maintenance or float mode is for, and it is the standard answer for a car that is not being used. Leave it in a ventilated place, use an outdoor-rated lead if it is outside, and check on it occasionally like any appliance left running.
Is a solar trickle charger any good?
For holding a healthy battery topped up on a car parked outside with no mains nearby, a reasonable-quality panel with a proper regulator does the job. It will not recover a flat battery in a British winter — there is simply not enough light.
Do I need to disconnect the battery from the car to charge it?
Usually not with a modern smart charger, and leaving it connected preserves the car's settings. Check the handbook, because some manufacturers specify connecting the negative lead to a body earth point rather than the terminal so the battery monitoring sensor still measures the current correctly.
