How long should a car battery last, and how do I know mine is failing?

Short answer

Most car batteries last somewhere around four to six years, and the classic warning is slow, laboured cranking that gets worse in cold weather while everything else works normally. If the car starts fine but the battery light stays on while driving, that is the charging system rather than the battery. A battery that is fine on a warm day and dead on the first cold morning is a battery near the end, not bad luck.

A lead-acid battery does not fail gradually in a way you notice day to day. It loses capacity slowly for years while still starting the car easily on mild mornings, and then the first genuinely cold night arrives, the oil is thicker, the engine is harder to turn, and the battery no longer has the reserve to do it. That is why the AA and RAC see a spike in battery call-outs on the first cold snap every autumn — nothing changed overnight except the temperature exposing a battery that was already marginal.

Safety

A car battery contains sulphuric acid and can produce explosive hydrogen while charging. Do not smoke or create sparks near one, keep metal tools away from both terminals at once, and wear eye protection if you handle it. A battery that is visibly swollen, cracked or leaking should not be charged or jump started — have it replaced.
Telling a failing battery from a charging fault

Step by step

  1. Listen to how the car cranks.A healthy start is a quick, even spin and then running. A dying battery gives a slow, dragging crank that speeds up as it goes, or a crank that is noticeably slower than it was a month ago. That change over weeks is the single most useful sign.
  2. Distinguish a slow crank from a rapid clicking.Rapid machine-gun clicking with no cranking is classic very-low-battery or a bad connection. A single loud clunk with no crank at all points more at the starter motor or its solenoid. Nothing at all, with no dash lights, is a totally flat battery or a disconnected terminal.
  3. Check the terminals before assuming the worst.With the engine off, look for white or blue-green powdery corrosion around the posts, and check both clamps are tight enough that you cannot twist them by hand. A poor connection produces exactly the same symptoms as a flat battery and costs nothing to fix.
  4. Watch the battery warning light while driving.The battery symbol on the dashboard is not a fuel gauge for the battery — it reports the charging system. If it comes on and stays on while the engine is running, the alternator is not charging, and the car is running down the battery as you drive. Head somewhere safe rather than to the far side of town.
  5. Note whether the car recovers after a jump start.If it jump starts and then runs and restarts normally afterwards, the battery was flat and may or may not be finished. If it jump starts, runs while connected, then dies as soon as the leads come off, the alternator is not charging.
  6. Get it tested rather than guessing.Most garages and many parts shops will test a battery free in a few minutes with a conductance tester, which measures its ability to deliver current rather than just its voltage. A battery can read a healthy voltage and still be incapable of turning an engine on a cold morning.
  7. Think about how you use the car.Short journeys never replace what starting consumes, so a car doing two miles at a time in winter is being slowly discharged even though it is being driven daily. So is a car left standing for weeks with a dashcam or tracker drawing power.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the battery light means a flat battery — It means the charging circuit has stopped working. Treating it as a low-battery warning leads people to keep driving until the car stops somewhere inconvenient, usually with no power steering either.
  • Replacing the battery without checking why the old one died — If something was draining it, the new one dies too. If the alternator was not charging, the new one is flat within days.

If it doesn't work

Fine all summer, dead on the first frost

Cause: A battery near end of life, exposed by cold and thicker oil — Fix: Have it tested. This is the most common battery failure pattern there is, and replacing it before mid-winter is cheaper than a recovery call-out.

Needs a jump every few days

Cause: Either the battery no longer holds charge or something is draining it while parked — Fix: A test tells you which. If the battery tests good, ask the garage to check for a parasitic drain — aftermarket alarms, trackers, dashcams and a boot light that never goes off are the usual culprits.

Battery light flickers at idle and goes out when revved

Cause: Slipping or glazed auxiliary belt, or an alternator on the way out — Fix: Get it looked at soon. That belt often also drives the water pump and power steering, so its failure takes more than the charging with it.

Everything electrical behaves oddly — dim lights, odd warnings, radio resetting

Cause: Low system voltage rather than lots of separate faults — Fix: Check charging and battery condition first. Modern cars produce a spray of unrelated-looking warnings when voltage drops, and chasing each one individually wastes a lot of time.

New battery fitted and it happened again within a year

Cause: Undiagnosed drain, faulty alternator, or a battery of the wrong specification — Fix: Cars with stop-start need a specific AGM or EFB battery, and fitting an ordinary one shortens its life dramatically. Check what the car actually calls for.

Questions people ask

Will a short drive recharge a flat battery?

Not meaningfully. Starting the engine takes a large amount out, and an alternator replaces it slowly. A genuinely flat battery needs a proper charge from a mains charger over several hours, or a long steady run — twenty minutes to the shops does not do it.

Does leaving a car standing kill the battery?

Do I need the exact same battery?

You need the same physical size, terminal layout and at least the same cold cranking amps, and crucially the same type — a stop-start car needs AGM or EFB. Fitting less than the car specifies works for a while and then does not.
