Why has my stop-start system stopped working?

Short answer
Stop-start refuses to work for dozens of legitimate reasons — battery not fully charged, engine or cabin not up to temperature, heater or air conditioning working hard, steering turned, bonnet open, seatbelt undone, gradient, or the car simply deciding conditions are not right. If it worked all summer and has quietly stopped for good, the usual answer is a battery losing capacity. A car with stop-start needs an AGM or EFB battery, not an ordinary one.
Stop-start is the most misunderstood system on a modern car, because its refusal to operate looks like a fault and almost never is. The car is running a continuous calculation about whether stopping the engine now would cost more than it saves — in comfort, in emissions after a cold start, or in battery state of charge. Most of the time that calculation says no, and the system stays silent about why. The genuinely useful thing to know is that the system is also one of the best battery health indicators a car has: it needs enough reserve to restart the engine at any moment, so it is the first thing to go quietly when a battery starts fading.
Step by step
- Rule out the obvious conditions first.Most systems will not stop the engine until the coolant is at operating temperature, and many also want the cabin at the temperature you asked for. On a short journey in winter, neither happens, and stop-start simply never activates. That is normal.
- Check what the heating and air conditioning are doing.If the climate control is working hard — full demist, maximum heat, maximum cooling — the car will keep the engine running to drive the compressor or produce heat. Turning demist off often brings stop-start straight back, which is a useful test.
- Notice the mechanical conditions.Many cars will not stop with the steering turned away from straight ahead, on a noticeable gradient, with the bonnet open, with the driver's seatbelt undone or the door open, or in reverse. Some also refuse below a certain outside temperature.
- Look for a dashboard message rather than assuming.Most cars show something — a crossed-out A, an amber stop-start symbol, or a text message. A crossed-out symbol usually means temporarily unavailable; an amber warning symbol usually means the system has a stored fault.
- Suspect the battery if it has stopped permanently.This is the common one. Stop-start monitors battery state of charge and stops offering the function long before the car struggles to start. A car that used to stop at every junction and now never does, with no other change, very often has a battery approaching the end of its life.
- Think about your journeys.A car doing nothing but short cold trips never fully recharges, so the battery sensor sees a low state of charge every day and disables the function. A long steady run sometimes restores it, which is both a diagnosis and a partial fix.
- Get the battery tested before replacing anything.Most garages and parts shops test free with a conductance tester. That is a five-minute answer to a question people otherwise spend money guessing at.
- Insist on the right battery type if it needs one.Cars with stop-start need AGM or EFB batteries, which tolerate the constant shallow cycling. Fitting a standard lead-acid battery is cheaper, works for a while, and then fails early — and on many cars the new battery must also be registered to the battery management system with a diagnostic tool, or the charging strategy stays wrong.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a stop-start system that has gone quiet is broken — In the large majority of cases it is either normal conditions or a battery in decline. Neither is fixed by replacing the system, and diagnosing the battery costs nothing.
- Fitting a standard battery to a stop-start car to save money — The shallow, repeated cycling destroys an ordinary lead-acid battery in a fraction of its normal life. The saving evaporates within about two years.
If it doesn't work
Works in summer, never in winter
Cause: Engine and cabin never reach the temperatures the system requires on short cold trips — Fix: Normal behaviour, not a fault. It returns as the weather warms or on longer journeys.
Stopped working the week after a new battery was fitted
Cause: Wrong battery type, or the new battery was not registered to the battery management system — Fix: Ring whoever fitted it. Registration is a two-minute software job on cars that need it and is frequently skipped by cheap fitters.
Engine stops but restarts almost immediately
Cause: A demand appeared — climate control, brake vacuum, battery state of charge — Fix: Designed behaviour. If it happens every single time, have the battery tested.
Amber stop-start warning light on the dashboard
Cause: A stored fault, often a battery sensor on the negative terminal or the crankshaft sensor — Fix: Have the codes read. The battery current sensor clamped to the negative terminal is a common and modest failure.
System works but the restart is rough or slow
Cause: Battery capacity falling, or a starter approaching the end of its life — Fix: Get the battery tested first. Stop-start cars use uprated starters, but they still wear, and a slow restart at a junction is worth acting on.
Questions people ask
Does stop-start wear out the engine?
Engines designed for it use uprated starters, uprated batteries and, on many cars, oil galleries or bearings specified for the extra stop-start cycles. It is not a bolt-on afterthought on modern cars. Using the correct oil specification matters more here than on an older engine.
Can I turn it off permanently?
Most cars have a button that disables it for the current journey and forget the setting each time you switch off. Some can be coded to default off, though on many cars that affects emissions test approval and may be a warranty issue. It is worth asking a dealer before paying anyone to do it.
Does it actually save fuel?
In real stop-start town traffic, measurably yes, though the figure is small on any single journey. On a motorway commute it does essentially nothing, which is why drivers who never see traffic think it is pointless.
