What maintenance does an electric car actually need?

What disappears from the service schedule, what stays, what is new, and why EV tyres wear faster and need a specific load rating.

Short answer

The engine items go — no oil, no filters, no spark plugs, no cambelt, no exhaust — but the schedule does not empty. Brake fluid still degrades on a calendar, the cabin filter blocks, the coolant that manages the battery has a life, and the brakes need cleaning and lubricating precisely because regeneration means they are barely used. Tyres are the big one: an EV is heavier and delivers instant torque, so tyres wear faster and must meet the load index the car specifies.

The claim that an electric car needs no maintenance is a useful shorthand that misleads people into skipping services. What is true is that the largest and most failure-prone assembly on a combustion car — an engine with hundreds of moving parts, a fuel system, an ignition system and an exhaust after-treatment system — is simply absent, and with it a long list of consumables. What remains is a car: it still has suspension, steering, brakes, tyres, wipers, a 12V battery, air conditioning, and a cooling system that now looks after a battery and an inverter instead of an engine. Several of those items are time-based rather than mileage-based, which means a low-mileage EV is not exempt from them.

Do not attempt any work involving orange cabling, the traction battery, or the high-voltage air conditioning compressor — these require trained technicians with specific equipment and insulated tools. Electric cars are also heavier than equivalent combustion cars, so jacking points, axle stand ratings and tyre load indices all matter more, not less. Never guess a jacking point on an EV; the battery pack forms part of the floor.

Step by step

  1. Know what has genuinely gone.Engine oil and filter, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, cambelt or chain, clutch on a manual, exhaust and catalytic converter, and on a diesel the DPF and AdBlue system. That is a substantial and genuinely welcome reduction in both cost and failure modes.
  2. Keep brake fluid on the calendar.It is hygroscopic and degrades by absorbing moisture whether the car is driven or not, so the interval is time-based exactly as on a combustion car. Skipping it on an EV is a common and entirely unjustified saving.
  3. Have the brakes cleaned and lubricated.Because regeneration does most of the slowing, EV brakes are used very little, and calipers that rarely move seize and discs that rarely get hot corrode. Cleaning and lubricating the caliper slides at each service is the specific EV maintenance item most often overlooked.
  4. Check the coolant.Most EVs have one or more liquid cooling circuits for the traction battery, the inverter and the motor, and that coolant has a specification and a replacement interval like any other. It is not optional, and battery thermal management is what protects your most expensive component.
  5. Do the ordinary items.Cabin or pollen filter, wipers, washer fluid, tyres, suspension, steering, lights, and the 12V battery. These are unchanged, and the cabin filter matters more on an EV because there is no engine noise to mask a struggling blower.
  6. Expect tyres to wear faster.An EV is significantly heavier than an equivalent combustion car because of the battery, and it delivers full torque instantly. Both increase tyre wear. Owners routinely report replacing tyres considerably sooner than they expect, and that is now a real part of the running cost.
  7. Fit tyres with the right load index.The extra weight means EVs frequently specify a higher load index than a similar-sized petrol car, and some manufacturers homologate specific tyres marked for electric vehicles. Fitting a lower load rating than the placard specifies affects roadworthiness and an insurance claim.
  8. Consider EV-specific tyres deliberately.Tyres marketed for EVs typically combine lower rolling resistance, a stiffer construction for the weight, and noise-absorbing foam inside the tread — which matters because there is no engine noise to mask road roar. They cost more. They are not compulsory, but the load rating is.
  9. Keep the software up to date.This is the genuinely new maintenance item. Manufacturers issue updates that change charging behaviour, standby drain, thermal management and range prediction. On some cars they are over the air; on others they happen at a service. It is worth asking.
  10. Ask for a battery health check at services.Many manufacturers can report the traction battery's state of health with their diagnostic tools, and having it recorded periodically builds a history. That record is worth real money at resale, and it is what a warranty claim about capacity loss will be judged against.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping services because an EV has no engine — Brake fluid, coolant, filters and brake caliper maintenance are all still due, and several are time-based. A skipped brake fluid change is exactly as consequential on an EV as on anything else.
  • Fitting tyres with a lower load index to save money — The placard load index accounts for the car's real weight. Fitting below it affects roadworthiness, can affect an insurance claim, and puts the tyre outside its design envelope on a heavy vehicle.

If it doesn't work

Tyres worn out far sooner than on your old car

Cause: More weight and instant torque — Fix: Expected rather than faulty. Smooth acceleration, correct pressures and regular alignment checks all help materially, because an EV punishes a geometry fault faster.

Brakes squealing or binding despite low mileage

Cause: Corrosion from disuse — Fix: Have the calipers cleaned and lubricated. Occasional firm braking from speed on a dry road also keeps the discs clean.

Dealer quoting a full service on a car with no engine

Cause: The schedule is genuinely shorter but not empty — Fix: Ask for the itemised manufacturer schedule for your mileage and age, exactly as you would on a petrol car, and question anything not on it.

Range noticeably lower after several years

Cause: Gradual battery capacity loss — Fix: Some loss is normal and expected. Ask for a state-of-health measurement and compare against the warranty threshold, which is typically expressed as a minimum percentage retained over a period.

Road noise louder than expected

Cause: No engine noise to mask tyre roar — Fix: Tyre choice makes a large difference. Look at the noise rating on the tyre label and consider tyres with acoustic foam.

Garage says they cannot work on it

Cause: High-voltage work requires trained technicians and specific equipment — Fix: Ordinary items — tyres, brakes, suspension, filters — can be done anywhere competent. Anything involving the traction system needs a qualified EV technician, and independent specialists increasingly exist.

Is an electric car cheaper to service?

Generally yes, sometimes substantially — there is no oil, no filters, no plugs and no exhaust. The saving is smaller than people expect once tyres are counted, because EVs go through them faster, and it does not extend to the items that remain.
