Why does brake fluid need changing when it still looks fine?
How brake fluid absorbs water out of the air, why that lowers its boiling point, and the driving situations in which old fluid produces a pedal that goes to the floor.

Short answer
Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it pulls moisture out of the atmosphere through the seals and hoses, and a few per cent of water is enough to drop its boiling point dramatically. Hot brakes then boil the water in the fluid, and vapour compresses where liquid does not, so the pedal goes soft or to the floor exactly when you are braking hardest. That is why the interval is measured in years rather than miles: it degrades by absorbing water, whether you drive the car or not.
Almost every other consumable on a car degrades from use. Brake fluid degrades from time, which is why it catches people out. It is designed to be almost incompressible so that pressure at the pedal becomes pressure at the caliper, and it is designed to stay liquid at temperatures that would boil water many times over. The problem is that it is also, by chemistry, an excellent absorber of water vapour, and it takes it in through microscopic paths in the rubber hoses and around the reservoir cap. A fluid with three or four per cent water content boils far cooler than fresh fluid, and once part of the system contains vapour the pedal has something compressible in it.

Step by step
- Find the interval in your handbook.Most manufacturers specify a brake fluid change every two years or so, sometimes independent of mileage entirely. Some now specify longer intervals with particular fluids. It is one of the few service items that is genuinely time-based and it is one of the most often skipped.
- Check the specification on the reservoir cap.It will say DOT 4, DOT 5.1, or a manufacturer code. DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 are glycol-based and broadly compatible with each other upwards, but DOT 5 is silicone-based and must never be mixed with them. Use what the cap says.
- Understand what a garage is actually testing.They test moisture content with an electronic tester or test strips, and often the boiling point directly. That measurement, not the colour, is what decides. Fluid that looks clean can be well past its useful moisture content.
- Do not judge by appearance.Fluid does darken with age and contamination, and very dark fluid is certainly overdue. But clear, pale fluid tells you nothing about its water content, which is the property that matters.
- Notice the symptoms that mean it has already gone too far.A pedal that feels progressively softer as you descend a long hill, or that needs pumping after repeated hard stops, is fluid boiling. It comes back once things cool, which is why it gets dismissed. Do not dismiss it.
- Check the level, but understand what a falling level means.The level drops slowly as brake pads wear, because the caliper pistons move outwards and hold more fluid — that is normal. A level that drops with pads that are not worn means a leak, and a leak in a brake system is an emergency.
- Never open the reservoir unnecessarily.Every time the cap comes off, moist air gets in. Check the level through the translucent side of the reservoir against the marks, which is what they are there for.
- Have it done with a service rather than as a separate visit.It is a modest job when the car is already in and the wheels may already be off. Doing it on schedule is one of the cheapest pieces of preventive maintenance on a car, and it protects the ABS unit, which is expensive and is damaged by corrosion from water in the fluid.
Common mistakes
- Skipping the fluid change because the brakes feel fine — They will feel fine right up until the one descent or the one emergency stop that boils the fluid. The failure mode of old brake fluid is that it works perfectly until you need it most.
- Topping up from a bottle that has been open in the garage for a year — Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air in the bottle just as readily as in the car. Fresh, sealed fluid only, and dispose of the remainder rather than storing it.
If it doesn't work
Pedal goes soft after a long descent then recovers
Cause: Fluid boiling from heat, almost always because of moisture content — Fix: Get the fluid tested and changed. Also use a lower gear on descents so the engine does the retarding rather than the brakes.
Pedal slowly sinks while you hold it at a junction
Cause: An internal leak past the master cylinder seals, or an external leak — Fix: This is a hydraulic fault, not a fluid-age issue, and it means stop driving. Have the car recovered.
Fluid level low and pads are nearly new
Cause: A leak somewhere in the system — Fix: Stop. Look for a wet patch behind a wheel or at the pedal box. A brake system that is losing fluid can fail completely and without warning.
Fluid is very dark and the car has never had it changed
Cause: Age and contamination — Fix: Have it changed and have the system checked. Very old fluid corrodes the ABS unit and the caliper bores from the inside.
Garage says the fluid tested at high moisture on a low-mileage car
Cause: Time, not use — the absorption happens regardless — Fix: Entirely plausible and not an upsell. A car that does 3,000 miles a year still needs the fluid changed on the calendar.
Questions people ask
Does brake fluid really go off if I barely drive?
Yes, and low-mileage cars are the ones this catches. The moisture absorption is chemical and happens with the car sitting still. It is the clearest example on a car of a service item that is about time rather than distance.
Can I mix DOT 4 and DOT 5.1?
They are both glycol-based and are generally compatible, with DOT 5.1 having a higher boiling point. Use whatever the reservoir cap specifies as a minimum, and never mix DOT 5, which is silicone-based and incompatible with all of them.
Is brake fluid checked in the MOT?
The MOT checks brake performance, the condition of visible components and the fluid level, but it does not test moisture content. A car can pass its MOT with fluid that is years overdue, which is exactly why it needs handling as a servicing item.
