What should I check when buying a used electric car?

The one question that matters most and how to get an honest answer to it, whether the battery is owned or leased, what the warranty actually covers, and the checks that are specific to an electric car.

Short answer

The battery is most of the car's value, so the central question is its state of health — the percentage of original capacity it retains. Ask for a manufacturer diagnostic report, check the car's own display, or use an independent battery test, and treat a seller who cannot produce any of these as a reason to be cautious. Then check the remaining battery warranty, whether the battery is owned or leased, what cables are included, and the maximum DC charging rate.

Buying a used electric car is a different exercise from buying a used petrol one, because the thing that determines its value and its future is invisible and cannot be assessed by listening to it. There is no cold start to hear, no oil to check, no cambelt history to demand. Instead there is a large sealed component that is somewhere between eighty and one hundred per cent of the capacity it had when new, and the whole of the inspection is about establishing where in that range it sits and how much warranty is left. The good news is that this is measurable, and the tools to measure it now exist.

Never inspect anything involving orange cabling or the underside of the battery pack yourself. If a used EV has visible underbody damage, a scraped battery casing, or evidence of flood damage, walk away — a compromised traction battery is both dangerous and effectively unrepairable at sensible cost, and water ingress into a high-voltage system is a serious hazard.

Step by step

  1. Establish the battery's state of health.State of health is the percentage of original usable capacity the pack retains. Some cars display it in a service menu; most manufacturers can produce a report from their diagnostic tool; and there are now independent battery testing services that issue a certificate. Ask for one of these, and be sceptical of a car with none.
  2. Sanity-check it against the range display.Charge it to a known percentage and compare the predicted range against the original official figure, allowing for the weather and the previous driver's style. It is crude, but it catches a car whose capacity has fallen a long way.
  3. Check the remaining battery warranty carefully.Most manufacturers warrant the traction battery for a set number of years and miles against falling below a stated percentage of original capacity — the threshold is usually somewhere around 70 per cent. Find out what the threshold is, when the cover ends, and whether it transfers to a new owner, which usually requires the servicing to have been done properly.
  4. Find out whether the battery is owned or leased.Some early electric cars were sold with the battery on a separate monthly lease. That arrangement makes the car cheaper to buy and commits you to a monthly payment for as long as you own it, and the lease company can disable charging if payments stop. Establish which it is before discussing price.
  5. Ask how it has been charged.Frequent rapid charging and habitually sitting at a hundred per cent both accelerate degradation. A car that has spent its life on a home wallbox charging to eighty per cent is in better shape than one used exclusively on motorway rapid chargers, and the service or app history sometimes shows it.
  6. Check the maximum DC charging rate.This is a fixed property of the car and it determines what long journeys will feel like for as long as you own it. An older EV that peaks at 50 kW will always be slow to charge on a motorway, however good the post. It is one of the biggest practical differences between generations.
  7. Confirm what cables are included.A Type 2 cable and a three-pin granny cable should both be present. Replacing them is expensive and a missing cable is a genuine negotiating point. Check them for damage at both ends and at the control box.
  8. Look at the tyres and the brakes specifically.EV tyres wear faster and must meet the load index on the placard, so four cheap tyres of the wrong rating is both a cost and a warning about how the car has been maintained. Look for heavily corroded brake discs, which is normal on an EV but expensive if pitted.
  9. Do all the ordinary used car checks too.MOT history, a paid vehicle history check for outstanding finance and write-off markers, service records, and a thorough physical inspection. Everything the catalogue's used car guides say still applies — an EV is still a car with suspension, steering and bodywork.
  10. Check for outstanding recalls and software updates.Several manufacturers have issued battery-related recalls and significant software updates affecting charging and range. Ask the dealer to confirm all outstanding actions have been completed, and check the free GOV.UK recall service by registration.

Common mistakes

  • Judging the battery by the range display on a cold day — The predicted range is a rolling estimate from recent driving and is heavily affected by temperature. It tells you almost nothing about capacity. State of health is a measurement; the range display is a guess.
  • Not checking whether the battery is leased — It turns a cheap car into one with a permanent monthly commitment, and the lease company retains real power over the vehicle. It is the single biggest hidden variable in early used EVs.

If it doesn't work

Seller cannot provide any battery health information

Cause: Either they do not know how, or they would rather not — Fix: Offer to have an independent battery test done as a condition of sale. A confident seller with a healthy car will usually agree.

Displayed range much lower than the official figure

Cause: Could be weather and driving style, could be capacity loss — Fix: Do not judge from a cold winter test drive alone. Get the state of health measured, which is the only figure that separates the two.

Battery lease discovered late in the process

Cause: Common on some early models — Fix: Recalculate entirely. A monthly battery lease changes the total cost of ownership substantially, and it must be transferred to you formally by the lease company.

Charging cable missing

Cause: Left with the previous owner or lost — Fix: A real cost. Negotiate it off the price, and make sure what you do get is the right type and rating for the car.

Underbody or battery casing damage

Cause: Grounding, a kerb strike, or flooding — Fix: Walk away. Traction battery damage is dangerous, extremely expensive, and frequently means the car is uneconomic to repair. This is the one inspection point with no acceptable answer.

Car is out of battery warranty

Cause: Age or mileage — Fix: Not automatically a reason to avoid it, but it changes the risk substantially, because a traction battery replacement can approach the value of the car. Price it accordingly and insist on a state of health figure.

Questions people ask

How much battery degradation is normal?

Real-world fleet data generally shows gradual, modest loss — a small percentage over the first few years, slowing after that, rather than a cliff. What matters is the measured figure for the specific car and how it compares with its age and mileage, not a general rule.

Does the battery warranty transfer to me?

Usually yes, for the remainder of its term, provided the car has been maintained to schedule. Confirm the specific terms with the manufacturer rather than the seller, including the capacity threshold and what voids it.

Are used EVs a good buy?

They depreciate faster than equivalent petrol cars, which is bad news for the first owner and good news for the second — and running and servicing costs are lower. The risk is concentrated in one component, which is exactly why measuring its health before buying matters more than anything else on the car.
