Is my soil contaminated, and is it safe to grow food in?
The site histories that raise a real question, what a home test can and cannot tell you, and the practical measures that let you grow food safely on ground you are unsure about.

Short answer
Start with the history: former industrial land, filled ground, an orchard sprayed with lead arsenate, a demolition site, a house built before 1970 with flaking paint, or a plot beside a busy road before unleaded fuel. If any apply, get a laboratory soil test for heavy metals before growing food. If you cannot or will not test, grow in raised beds with imported soil, wash produce thoroughly, and keep children out of bare soil.
Most garden soil is fine and this question does not need to be asked. The reason it is worth a guide is that the situations where contamination is genuinely likely are quite specific and quite identifiable, and a gardener who knows their plot's history can usually settle the question in an afternoon — either by ruling it out or by knowing that a test is warranted.

Step by step
- Start with the history, not with a test kit.What was here before? Old maps — many local libraries and online historical mapping services cover this — show former industrial use, railway land, filled ground, gasworks, tips and orchards. The local authority holds a contaminated land register. An estate agent's environmental search on a purchase covers some of it. This costs nothing and answers most cases.
- Learn which histories actually matter.Former industrial and commercial land. Made-up or filled ground of unknown origin. Old orchards, where lead arsenate was used as an insecticide into the mid-twentieth century. Demolition sites. Land beside a busy road that predates unleaded petrol. Allotments with a long history of ash and clinker paths and unregulated tipping. Sites where vehicles were repaired or bonfires were burned repeatedly.
- Look at the house itself.Soil directly beside a building painted before 1970 can carry lead from flaking old paint, concentrated in the first metre or so. This is one of the commonest and most overlooked domestic sources, and it is easily avoided simply by not growing food in that strip.
- Understand what home test kits do and do not do.Home kits reliably measure pH and give a crude indication of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. They do not test for lead, arsenic, cadmium, hydrocarbons or asbestos. There is no domestic kit that answers the contamination question, and any product implying otherwise is not doing what it claims.
- Get a laboratory test if the history warrants it.Several UK laboratories offer heavy metal screens for domestic gardens at modest cost. Take a composite sample — ten to fifteen small cores from across the growing area, mixed — and follow the lab's sampling instructions exactly. Results come with reference values so you can interpret them.
- Understand the main exposure route, because it changes the answer.For most contaminants, especially lead, the dominant route is swallowing soil — hands, dust, unwashed produce with soil on it — rather than uptake into the plant. This is why the risk is much higher for young children playing on bare soil than it is from eating vegetables grown in it, and it is why washing produce matters more than choosing crops.
- Know which crops take up more.Leafy vegetables and herbs accumulate more than fruiting crops, mainly because of soil splash and dust on the leaves. Root crops carry soil on their skins. Fruiting crops — tomatoes, beans, courgettes, top fruit — take up very little into the fruit itself and are the safest choice on ground you are unsure about.
- Take the practical measures if you are not going to test.Grow in raised beds with imported, certified topsoil, with a permeable membrane between the imported soil and the ground below. Keep the soil surface covered with mulch so there is no dust. Wash all produce thoroughly and peel root crops. Wash hands after gardening. Keep children off bare soil.
- Raise pH and organic matter, which genuinely reduces availability.Most heavy metals are much less available to plants at neutral to slightly alkaline pH and in soils rich in organic matter, which binds them. Liming to around pH 6.5 to 7.0 and adding compost is a real risk-reduction measure, not a cosmetic one — though it does not remove the contaminant.
- Stop and get help if you find asbestos.Fibrous grey cement sheet fragments are common on demolition-affected land. Do not break, sweep or dig further. Cover the area, keep people and pets away, and contact your local authority's environmental health team for advice on assessment and licensed removal. This is not a job for a householder.
Tips
- Allotment sites often have a known history that the site secretary or the council can tell you. Ask before assuming, and ask specifically about ash paths and old tipping.
- Soil brought in on a lorry with no stated origin is a contamination risk you create yourself. Buy topsoil to a stated standard with a traceable source.
- Growing food on a plot with an uncertain history is not automatically unsafe. The measured, proportionate answer for most people is raised beds with known soil, mulched surfaces and thorough washing.
- Old lead paint on a fence, a shed or a window frame that has been sanded or has flaked contaminates the strip of ground directly beneath it. That is a small, avoidable area rather than a whole-garden problem.
- Bonfire sites accumulate ash from whatever was burned there, which historically often included treated timber and painted wood. Do not grow food on an old bonfire patch without testing it.
Questions people ask
Can I test for lead myself?
Not reliably. There is no domestic kit that gives a usable answer for heavy metals. A laboratory screen on a properly taken composite sample is the only meaningful route, and it is not expensive.
Does washing vegetables actually help?
Considerably, because the dominant exposure route for most contaminants is soil on the surface of the produce rather than uptake into the tissue. Wash thoroughly, remove outer leaves, and peel root crops.
Are raised beds a complete answer?
They are a very good practical answer if they are deep enough, filled with soil of known origin, and separated from the ground below by a permeable membrane. Roots of deep-rooted crops can still reach the original soil in a shallow bed.
Who is responsible if my land is contaminated?
Under the Part 2A regime the local authority identifies and deals with land that meets the statutory definition of contaminated land, and liability rests with those who caused or knowingly permitted the contamination, or in some cases the current owner. This is a legal question and worth advice if it arises seriously.
