Will a raised bed fix my drainage problem?
It lifts roots out of the wet, which is often exactly enough — but it removes no water at all, and there are three situations where it changes nothing.

Short answer
A raised bed does not drain your garden. It gives roots 300mm of free-draining material above the wet zone, which for most vegetables and border plants is the whole problem solved. It fails where water arrives from somewhere else, where the underlying pan is left intact, and where the water table rises into the bed itself in winter.
The honest way to think about a raised bed on wet ground is that it does not fix the drainage — it moves the plant. The water table, the pan or the clay underneath is exactly where it was. What has changed is that the roots are now 300mm higher up, in material with air in it, and for a plant that is the entire question.
Step by step
- Find out why the water is sitting, before you build anything.Three completely different causes look the same on the surface. A compacted pan stopping infiltration. Naturally slow clay that is simply saturated in winter. Or water arriving from elsewhere — a slope above, a broken downpipe, a neighbour's hard standing. A raised bed helps the first two and does nothing for the third.
- Rule out arriving water first.Watch it in heavy rain. If water is visibly running onto the area, a raised bed will simply be an island with a moat, and the fix is to intercept or redirect the flow. This one is worth ten minutes in a downpour with a coat on.
- Break the pan before you fill the bed.This is the step that roughly doubles the benefit and almost everybody skips it. Fork through the compacted layer across the whole footprint before the frame goes on. Otherwise water perches under the bed as well as beside it, and the bed's own base stays saturated.
- Decide the depth by what you are growing.150mm is enough for salads and shallow-rooted bedding on ground that is only moderately wet. 300mm suits most vegetables and is the usual answer on genuinely wet ground. 450mm or more, effectively a container, is what you need where the ground is permanently waterlogged or where you are building over a hard surface.
- Fill it with a soil-led mix, not compost.Roughly 60 to 70 per cent good topsoil to 30 to 40 per cent compost. Compost alone sinks by a quarter or more in the first year and dries out fast because it has no mineral content to hold water. The mineral fraction is what makes the bed behave like soil.
- Leave the base open.No liner across the bottom, no membrane, no layer of rubble. The bed needs to connect to the soil below so worms, roots and water can move between them. Rubble in the base creates a perched water table and makes drainage worse, not better.
- Line the sides only, if you are lining anything.A liner against the inside faces of timber sides slows rot and stops soil washing through gaps. It should never cross the base.
- Accept what it cannot do.A raised bed does not dry out a lawn, does not lower a water table, and does not stop the paths between the beds being a swamp in January. Those are separate problems with separate answers.
Tips
- On very wet ground, raising the paths as well — with woodchip over cardboard — makes the whole area usable in winter and costs almost nothing.
- The width matters more than the height. A bed you can reach across from both sides, so you never stand on it, is what keeps the fill open and draining. Beyond about 1.2m it stops working.
- Beds on very wet ground benefit from being built in autumn and left to settle over winter, so you find out how they behave before you plant into them.
- Where the whole garden is waterlogged rather than one bed, look at land drainage, a soakaway or a bog garden instead. Building twelve raised beds on a swamp is a lot of money for a partial answer.
Alternatives
- Breaking the pan and improving the soil: Where the cause is a compacted layer over free-draining subsoil, forking through it and mulching annually genuinely fixes the drainage rather than working around it. Cheaper and more permanent, but slower.
- A French drain or land drain to a soakaway: The real answer where water genuinely needs to be moved. Needs somewhere legal for the water to go, and on a small garden the soakaway is often the limiting factor.
- Planting for the conditions: A bog garden, or moisture-loving planting, turns the problem into a feature. Free, permanent, and the only honest answer where the water table is genuinely high.
- Growing in containers: For a small number of plants on ground that will never drain, pots sidestep the whole question and can be moved.
Questions people ask
Do I need to put gravel or crocks in the bottom of a raised bed?
No, and it makes things worse. A coarse layer under finer material creates a perched water table — water will not cross into the gravel until the soil above is saturated. Leave the base open to the soil.
How high does the bed need to be to lift roots clear?
It depends how high the wet zone comes. Dig a hole in winter, see where standing water reaches, and build so that the fill's base sits above it — 300mm handles most British garden situations.
Will a raised bed on clay eventually improve the clay underneath?
Yes, slowly, and it is one of the underrated benefits. Worms move between the bed and the soil below and carry organic matter down, so the clay under a no-dig raised bed is measurably better after five years.
