How do I tell if my soil is compacted?

The screwdriver test, the spade test and the four surface signs — plus how to find the depth of the problem, which decides what you do about it.

Short answer

Push a long screwdriver into moist soil by hand. If it goes in easily to 300mm you have no compaction worth worrying about. If it stops abruptly at a consistent depth, that is a pan. Confirm by lifting a spadeful: roots running sideways along one horizontal line is the definitive sign. Note the depth — it tells you the cause and the cure.

Compaction is the most under-diagnosed problem in British gardens, because its symptoms — puddling, poor growth, moss, plants that never establish — all look like other things. It is also entirely mechanical: soil particles pressed together, air squeezed out, roots and water unable to get through. Finding the depth is what turns a vague complaint into a fixable problem.

Step by step

  1. Test when the soil is moist.Not baked and not saturated. Baked soil is hard everywhere and gives a false positive; saturated soil is soft everywhere and gives a false negative. Two days after decent rain is about right.
  2. Push the rod in by hand and feel for the change.Steady even resistance to full depth means no pan. A sudden, sharp increase in resistance at one depth, repeatable across the area, is a compacted layer. Mark the depth on the rod with tape.
  3. Repeat in a grid.At least six to eight points across the area, plus one in an undisturbed spot for comparison — under a shrub, or in a bed nobody walks on. Compaction is almost always patchy, and knowing where it is saves a lot of digging.
  4. Confirm with a spadeful.Lift a block to full spade depth and look at the roots. Fine roots running down and out in all directions means free soil. Roots hitting a level and turning to run flat along it is compaction, and it is the most reliable single sign there is.
  5. Read the depth to identify the cause.0 to 50mm is surface capping from rain on bare soil. 100 to 200mm is feet, wheelbarrows, or rotavating to the same depth year after year. 250mm and deeper is a machinery pan, and on a garden it usually means construction traffic — new builds, extensions, a driveway.
  6. Check the surface signs against the diagnosis.Puddles that sit for hours after rain but the soil is dry 300mm down. Moss and algae on bare soil. Grass thinning on desire lines. Weeds shifting towards plantain, pineapple weed and creeping buttercup. Plants that establish and then stop.
  7. Look at the wet zone above the pan.Dig through. Grey or blue-grey mottled soil sitting directly on the dense layer confirms it: water is arriving and cannot get past. Below the pan the soil is often bone dry, which is the detail that makes the diagnosis certain.
  8. Rule out the alternatives before acting.Water standing on clay that is simply saturated in February is not compaction. A dry patch under a tree is competition, not a pan. Hydrophobic soil that water runs off in August is a different problem again.

Tips

  • The comparison test matters more than any absolute reading. If the rod goes 300mm under a shrub and stops at 120mm in the lawn, you have your answer regardless of how hard either felt.
  • Green algae or a slimy film on bare soil is a reliable compaction signal in a garden. It means the surface stays wet long enough for algae to establish, which means water is not getting in.
  • A single wheelbarrow route across a bed in a wet winter can create a compacted strip that shows in the crop for three years.
  • Compaction under a lawn is very common and easy to miss, because grass hides it. Test lawns as well as beds.

If it doesn't work

Water sits in puddles for hours but the soil is dry a spade down

Cause: A shallow pan or surface capping stopping infiltration — Fix: Confirm the depth with the rod, then relieve it. Shallow capping responds to a light forking and a mulch; a pan needs the fork driven below it.

Plants establish, grow for a few weeks, then stop and stay small

Cause: Roots have reached a pan and cannot get past it, so the plant is living on a shallow layer — Fix: Lift one and look at the root ball. Roots circling flat at one level confirm it. Relieve the compaction before replanting.

The lawn is thin and mossy along the route everyone walks

Cause: Traffic compaction, the most common form — Fix: Aerate the strip and either reroute the traffic or accept it and put in a proper path. Aeration alone will not hold if the traffic continues.
