Why does my car judder or hesitate when I accelerate?

Short answer

A judder that comes with a flashing engine management light is a misfire — most often a spark plug, ignition coil or injector on one cylinder, and the codes will name which one. A hesitation that feels more like the car briefly running out of breath under load, with no light, points more at fuel delivery, a blocked filter or an air leak. A shudder only as you pull away, rising with clutch engagement rather than revs, is a clutch or flywheel problem, not an engine one.

Judder is one of those words that covers four unrelated faults, which is why so much time gets wasted on it. The useful trick is to notice what the judder is synchronised with. If it follows engine speed and is there in neutral when you rev, it is the engine itself. If it appears only under load — pulling up a hill, accelerating in a high gear — it is fuelling or ignition struggling with demand. If it happens only in the moment the clutch takes up, and disappears once you are moving, it is the transmission. And if it appears at a particular road speed regardless of what the engine is doing, it belongs to the wheels rather than to any of this.

A flashing engine management light while the car is juddering means a misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter, which is an expensive part. Reduce speed, avoid heavy acceleration and get the car looked at rather than completing a long journey. A car that hesitates when pulling out of a junction is also a hazard in its own right — do not attempt marginal gaps until it is fixed.

Step by step

  1. Note whether the engine management light is on, and whether it is flashing.Steady means a fault is stored. Flashing while it is happening means an active misfire severe enough that raw fuel is reaching the catalytic converter. That converts a book-it-in into a drive-gently-and-get-it-seen.
  2. Test whether it follows engine speed or road speed.Stationary in neutral, rev the engine gently and hold it steady. If the judder is there, it is engine or ignition. If the engine is smooth in neutral and only rough when driving, the load is the trigger and the fault shows up under demand.
  3. Notice when it happens.Only when cold, only when hot, only in high gears at low revs, only in the wet, only when the air conditioning is on. Every one of these narrows the field, and a garage that hears the pattern will find it faster and charge you less.
  4. Have the codes read early.Misfire codes are numbered by cylinder — P0301 is cylinder one, P0302 cylinder two and so on, with P0300 meaning a random or multiple misfire. That single number is worth more than an hour of guessing, and a cheap reader will show it.
  5. Start with the cheap ignition parts on a petrol car.Spark plugs and ignition coils are the most common cause by a wide margin, and both are replaceable service items. A misfire on one cylinder that moves to another cylinder when the coil is swapped over identifies the coil for certain.
  6. Consider fuel and air on a car with no misfire code.A blocked fuel filter, a tired fuel pump, a split or loose intake hose after the air flow meter, or a dirty air flow sensor all cause hesitation under load without necessarily setting a cylinder-specific code. Split intake hoses in particular are cheap and very common.

  8. Rule out the transmission if it only happens pulling away.A shudder as the clutch bites, worst on a hill start or with a full car, and absent once moving, is a clutch or dual mass flywheel issue rather than an engine fault. Chasing it with new plugs is a common and expensive detour.

Common mistakes

  • Replacing all the plugs and coils at once on a guess — Misfire codes name the cylinder. Swapping the suspect coil to another cylinder and seeing whether the code follows it is a free test that identifies the part with certainty.
  • Ignoring a judder because the car still drives — A misfire is unburnt fuel going into the exhaust, and catalytic converters do not tolerate that. The cheap repair has a short window before it becomes an expensive one.

If it doesn't work

Judder plus flashing engine light under acceleration

Cause: Active misfire, usually a coil or plug on one cylinder — Fix: Drive gently and get it seen soon. Continued driving pushes unburnt fuel into the catalytic converter, and replacing that costs many times more than a coil.

Hesitates only in damp weather

Cause: Tracking across worn HT leads, a cracked coil or a damp distributor cap on older cars — Fix: Classic and cheap. Worth checking before anything else on an older petrol car.

Flat spot from a standstill, no warning light

Cause: Air leak after the air flow meter, dirty throttle body, or a tired air flow sensor — Fix: Ask for the intake to be smoke tested for leaks. It is a quick test that finds a fault which otherwise takes hours to chase.

Judder appears only above a certain speed, regardless of gear

Diesel hesitates and puffs black smoke under load

Cause: Turbo actuator, EGR stuck open, or a blocked DPF — Fix: Get the codes read. These are three distinct faults with three distinct fixes and they feel identical from the driver's seat.

Could a fuel additive fix it?

Occasionally, if the cause is genuinely deposits on injectors, and a reputable injector cleaner in a full tank is a cheap thing to try on a high-mileage car. It will do nothing for a failed coil, a split hose or a blocked filter, and it is not a substitute for reading the codes.

Why does it only happen when the engine is cold?

Cold running uses a richer mixture and different ignition timing, so marginal components fail then first. It is a common early stage of coil or injector failure, and it usually progresses to happening warm too.

Is it the fuel I put in?

Rarely, but not never. Genuinely contaminated fuel usually causes trouble within a tank and affects all cylinders. If the problem started immediately after a fill-up at an unfamiliar station and is severe, keep the receipt and mention it.
