What is a DPF, and why does my diesel keep warning me about it?

A diesel particulate filter catches soot and periodically burns it off. Why short journeys break that cycle, what the warning light is actually asking you to do, and when it becomes a workshop job.

Short answer

The DPF traps soot and clears itself by burning it at high temperature, which needs a sustained run rather than short cold trips. When the DPF light comes on, the usual instruction is a steady drive of fifteen minutes or so above about 40 mph in a lower-than-usual gear so the exhaust stays hot — check your handbook, because manufacturers differ. If the light is flashing, or the car has gone into limp mode, that stage has passed and it needs a garage.

Every diesel car sold in the UK for well over a decade has a particulate filter in the exhaust, and it works exactly as the name suggests: it catches the soot that would otherwise leave the tailpipe. A filter that only fills up would be useless, so it is designed to clean itself by raising the exhaust temperature until the trapped soot burns away. That process is called regeneration, and it is the single thing that makes diesels a poor match for short urban journeys — because a car that never gets properly hot never completes it.

Removing or disabling a diesel particulate filter makes the vehicle illegal to use on the road and it will fail its MOT, because the MOT includes a visual check for the filter. It is also an offence to modify a vehicle's emissions system so that it no longer complies. If the light comes on with a loss of power and will not clear, get it diagnosed rather than looking for a way to switch it off.
How a diesel particulate filter cleans itself, and where it goes wrong

Step by step

  1. Understand the two ways it normally cleans itself.Passive regeneration happens on its own during sustained higher-speed driving, when exhaust temperatures are naturally high enough to burn the soot away. Active regeneration is triggered by the engine management when the filter reaches a set level of loading, by injecting extra fuel to raise exhaust temperature deliberately.
  2. Learn what an active regeneration feels like.Often a slightly raised idle, the cooling fan running more than usual, a hotter than normal smell, and sometimes a small increase in fuel consumption. It typically takes ten to twenty minutes of driving. Stopping the engine mid-cycle is what leaves the filter partly loaded, and repeated interruptions are the usual road to a blocked filter.
  3. Respond to the light while it is steady.A steady DPF light generally means passive regeneration has not been happening and the car wants a proper run. The common instruction is fifteen minutes or so at a steady speed above about 40 mph on a dual carriageway or A-road, in a gear that keeps the revs up. Your handbook is the authority here.
  4. Treat a flashing light or added warnings as a stop.A flashing DPF light, or the light combined with the engine management light and reduced power, means the filter is loaded beyond the point where driving will clear it. Continuing risks damage. It needs a forced regeneration on a garage's diagnostic equipment, or in bad cases replacement.
  5. Keep the oil right.Diesels with a DPF need low-ash oil to the manufacturer's specification. Ordinary oil leaves ash in the filter that no regeneration can burn away, and that ash is what eventually makes a filter unrecoverable. This is the most common way people quietly destroy their own filter.
  6. Be honest about whether a diesel suits your driving.If almost all your journeys are short and cold, the filter will keep blocking whatever you do. That is a mismatch between car and use, not a fault, and it is worth factoring in the next time you change car.
  7. Do not let anyone remove it.DPF removal is sold as a fix and is illegal for road use. The MOT includes a visual check for the filter, and a vehicle with it removed fails. It also affects insurance.

Common mistakes

  • Switching the engine off mid-regeneration because you have arrived — It leaves the filter partly cleaned and fuel in the oil. If you can tell one is running, an extra ten minutes of driving is genuinely worth it.
  • Using the wrong oil to save a few pounds — Non-low-ash oil leaves incombustible ash in the filter. Nothing removes it, so this converts a self-cleaning part into a consumable one.

If it doesn't work

Light comes on every few weeks

Cause: Journey pattern too short for regeneration to complete — Fix: Build in one longer run a week if you can, or accept that this car does not suit these journeys. Repeated part-completed regenerations are worse than none, because each dilutes the engine oil with fuel.

Oil level rising above maximum on a diesel

Cause: Fuel dilution from repeated interrupted regenerations — Fix: This is a genuine warning sign and can lead to engine damage. Get the oil changed and the regeneration behaviour investigated.

Regeneration seems to start every journey

Cause: A sensor fault, a leak in the exhaust before the filter, or a filter that is genuinely near capacity — Fix: Get the codes read. Pressure sensors and temperature sensors around the filter fail and cause exactly this.

Car went into limp mode with the DPF light on

Cause: Filter loading past the drivable threshold — Fix: Garage job. A forced regeneration on diagnostic equipment is far cheaper than a replacement filter, so do not delay.

Additive warning on a car with a fluid-assisted filter

Cause: Some manufacturers use a separate additive tank that lowers the soot burn temperature — Fix: It needs refilling at a garage on a schedule. It is not the same thing as AdBlue.

Questions people ask

Do petrol cars have one?

Newer petrol cars with direct injection often have a petrol particulate filter, which works on the same principle. It is less troublesome in practice because petrol exhaust temperatures are higher, but the same short-journey logic applies.

Does a DPF cleaning additive from a shop work?

Some help a mildly loaded filter regenerate by lowering the burn temperature. None of them remove ash, and none of them fix a sensor fault or a filter that is already blocked solid. Treat them as a maintenance aid rather than a repair.

How long does a DPF last?

Often the life of the car if it does the right kind of journeys and gets the right oil. On a short-journey car with the wrong oil it can be a fraction of that. The variability is almost entirely about use.
