What is AdBlue, and what happens if I run out?

Short answer
AdBlue is a urea and water solution injected into the exhaust to convert nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. It is consumed steadily and the car warns you well in advance — but if you ignore the warnings until the tank is empty, the engine management will prevent the car from restarting once it has been switched off. Top it up before that point and there is no drama.
AdBlue is the trade name for a standardised fluid used in selective catalytic reduction, which is the system most modern diesels use to meet nitrogen oxide limits. It sits in its own small tank with its own filler, usually blue-capped and next to the diesel filler or in the boot. It is not an additive to the fuel and it is not related to the particulate filter, which handles soot rather than gases — the two systems sit in the same exhaust and do different jobs, which is the main source of confusion.

- Find out whether your car uses it.Most diesel cars from around 2015 onwards do, and it is obvious once you look: a separate small blue-capped filler, and a dashboard message counting down a range. Petrol cars do not use it.
- Take the countdown warnings seriously the first time.The car will typically warn you with a range of a thousand miles or more, then escalate. The final stage is not a warning — the engine management prevents a restart once the engine has been switched off with an empty tank, which is a legal emissions requirement rather than a manufacturer choice.
- Buy it in a container with a proper nozzle.Bottles with a screw-on spout designed for the filler are far less messy than a plain container and a funnel. Forecourts, supermarkets and motor factors all sell it, and pumps are increasingly available at fuel stations for larger quantities.
- Top it up with the engine off and the car on level ground.Fill slowly. The filler often has a shut-off that reacts to a fast pour by spitting back. Do not overfill — the fluid expands if it freezes.
- Clean up any spills immediately.It is not corrosive to skin but it crystallises into a white deposit and can mark paint and trim. Water and a cloth deal with it while it is wet.
- Let the system recognise the top-up.Many cars need the ignition on, or a short drive, before the gauge updates. If the warning persists after a decent top-up and a drive, the level sensor or the system needs looking at.
- Buy fluid that meets the standard.It should state compliance with ISO 22241. It is a precisely specified solution, and contaminated or out-of-specification fluid can damage the injector and catalyst — which is one of the more expensive things to get wrong for the sake of a cheap container.
Common mistakes
- Putting AdBlue in the fuel tank — It is the single most costly mistake with this system, and the difference between an inconvenient drain and a very large bill is whether the engine was started afterwards.
- Buying an unbranded fluid with no standard quoted — The system injects it into a hot catalyst. Contaminants do not burn off; they poison the catalyst, which is one of the most expensive parts of the exhaust.
If it doesn't work
Warning appeared with a low mileage countdown
Cause: Tank genuinely low — Fix: Top up promptly. Do not plan on getting the last few miles out of it, because the no-restart lockout arrives before empty on many cars.
Car will not start and shows an emissions message
Cause: Lockout after running out — Fix: Adding fluid usually clears it after the ignition has been cycled, though some cars need a diagnostic reset at a garage. Add a decent quantity, not a token amount.
Consumption seems much higher than expected
Cause: Towing, short journeys, or a fault in the dosing system — Fix: Note how much you add and over what mileage. A sudden increase is worth having read, because a leaking or faulty injector wastes fluid and eventually triggers a fault.
Warning stays on after topping up
Cause: Level sensor, or the system has not re-read the level — Fix: Drive a few miles and cycle the ignition. If it persists, have it read — a sensor fault is a common cause and is not solved by adding more fluid.
White crystals around the filler or under the car
Cause: A small leak or a spill that has dried — Fix: Clean it off and watch whether it returns. A returning deposit means a leak in the tank or lines.
Questions people ask
How much does a car use?
It varies with engine, load and driving, and manufacturers usually quote a rough distance per litre in the handbook. In practice most drivers top up every few thousand miles, and towing or heavy loads use noticeably more.
Does AdBlue freeze?
It freezes at around minus 11°C, which is why the tank is heated on cars that use it. It is not damaged by freezing and thaws when the system warms, but do not leave a part-used container outside in a hard frost expecting to pour it.
Is AdBlue the same as a DPF additive?
No, and this trips people up. AdBlue treats nitrogen oxides in a catalyst; a particulate filter traps soot. Some cars also use a separate fuel additive to help the filter regenerate, which is a third fluid again and is normally refilled at a service.
