What coolant does my car need, and can I mix the colours?

Why coolant colour tells you almost nothing, what the specification code on the bottle actually means, and why old coolant damages an engine even though it still looks fine.

Short answer

Colour is a dye, not a specification, and different manufacturers use the same colours for completely different chemistries. What matters is the approval code your handbook names — something like G12++, VW TL 774, MS-90032 or a BS 6580 reference. Buy the coolant that lists your car's code on the back of the bottle, and do not mix chemistries: mixing incompatible inhibitor packages can gel and block the radiator. In an emergency, plain water gets you to a garage.

People treat coolant as antifreeze, and it is, but freezing protection is the least of what it does. It raises the boiling point so the system can run hot without vapour locking. It carries a package of corrosion inhibitors that protect aluminium heads, iron blocks, brass radiators, solder joints and rubber hoses — all different metals in one circuit, which is exactly the recipe for galvanic corrosion. And it lubricates the water pump seal. The inhibitors are consumed over time, which is why coolant has a replacement interval even though it does not evaporate and does not look any different after five years.

Safety

Never open a cooling system that is not stone cold — it is pressurised above the boiling point and will spray scalding liquid. Coolant based on ethylene glycol tastes sweet and is seriously toxic to people, pets and wildlife; clean up any spill on a driveway immediately and store it out of reach. Do not attempt to drain and refill a cooling system yourself: modern engines need specific bleeding procedures and an airlock causes overheating.

Step by step

  1. Look up the specification, not the colour.The handbook names an approval — a manufacturer code, or a standard. Most manufacturers also publish it online against a registration. Take that code to the shop and read the back of the bottle, where the approvals are listed.
  2. Understand what the families mean.Older IAT coolants use inorganic inhibitors and have short lives. OAT coolants use organic acid technology and last much longer. HOAT and similar hybrids sit between. They are not interchangeable, and a coolant that suits a modern aluminium engine can be wrong for an older one with a lot of solder in the radiator.
  3. Treat colour as marketing.Blue, green, pink, red, orange, yellow and purple have all been used by different makers for different chemistries, and the same colour from two brands can be entirely different products. Two coolants being the same colour is not evidence they can be mixed.
  4. Buy the right concentration for the job.Coolant is sold both as concentrate, to be diluted, and ready-mixed. Concentrate needs mixing with the correct water — many manufacturers specify deionised or distilled water, because the minerals in hard tap water form scale. Read the bottle: putting neat concentrate in is worse at cooling than the correct mixture.
  5. Do not top up with a different chemistry to save a trip.A small top-up of the wrong type is not usually catastrophic but it dilutes the inhibitor package and, with some combinations, causes a gel that blocks the radiator and heater matrix. If you genuinely do not know what is in there, plain water is the safer emergency top-up, followed by a proper flush and refill.
  6. Respect the replacement interval.It is in the handbook, often expressed in years as well as miles, and it exists because the inhibitors deplete. Old coolant looks the same and freezes at roughly the same temperature while quietly failing to protect the metal — corroded water pumps, pinholed radiators and blocked heater matrices are what that looks like a few years later.
  7. Have the concentration checked at a service.A refractometer or a cheap tester gives the freezing point in seconds. A system that has been topped up with water repeatedly over the years can end up barely protected, which in a hard winter freezes and cracks things.
  8. Leave draining and refilling to a garage.This is a genuine boundary. Modern engines have complex coolant routing and specific bleed procedures, and an airlock left in the system causes overheating and a warped head. It is not an expensive job to have done.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing coolant by matching the colour in the tank — Colour is dye. Two identically coloured products can have opposed inhibitor chemistries, and mixing them is exactly how a radiator ends up full of gel.
  • Running the system on plain water beyond an emergency — It boils lower, freezes higher, carries no corrosion protection and does not lubricate the water pump seal. It gets you to a garage and nothing more.

If it doesn't work

Coolant looks brown, rusty or has floating debris

Cause: Inhibitors exhausted and the system corroding, or the wrong coolant used at some point — Fix: Have the system flushed and refilled with the correct specification. Debris in the coolant also blocks the heater matrix, which is why the heater often goes cold first.

Coolant looks like a gel or thick sludge

Cause: Incompatible chemistries mixed, or oil in the coolant — Fix: Do not drive it. Gelled coolant blocks the radiator, and oil in the coolant points at a head gasket or an oil cooler.

Needs topping up every few weeks

Cause: A leak somewhere — external, or internal into a cylinder — Fix: A sealed system does not consume coolant. Find the leak; the catalogue's head gasket and fluid leak guides both apply.

Heater cold and coolant level fine

Cause: Airlock, or a blocked heater matrix from old degraded coolant — Fix: Both are common after a coolant change done badly. Have it bled properly before anyone quotes for a matrix, which is a dashboard-out job on many cars.

Expansion tank cap looks crusty and the level fluctuates oddly

Cause: The cap is a pressure relief valve and they fail with age — Fix: One of the cheapest parts on a car and a genuinely common cause of overheating and coolant loss. Worth replacing on any older car as a matter of course.

Questions people ask

Can I use universal coolant?

Some are genuinely approved against a long list of manufacturer specifications, and if your car's code is printed on the bottle it is fine. "Suitable for all vehicles" with no codes listed is a marketing claim rather than an approval, and on a modern engine that is a real risk.

How often does coolant need changing?

Your handbook gives it, usually as a number of years or a mileage. Modern long-life coolants often run for many years; older technologies were on much shorter intervals. The time half matters more than the mileage, because the inhibitors deplete chemically rather than by use.

Is antifreeze the same as coolant?

In practice yes, in UK usage — antifreeze is the concentrate, coolant is what is in the engine once it is mixed with water. The important point is that the product does far more than prevent freezing, which is why running water in summer is not acceptable.
