Short answer
The EGR valve feeds a measured amount of exhaust gas back into the engine's intake to lower combustion temperature and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. It clogs because exhaust gas carries soot and oil vapour, and a lot of short low-load journeys never get hot enough to keep it clear. A stuck-open valve gives rough running and hesitation; a stuck-shut one usually gives a warning light and sometimes limp mode.
Exhaust gas recirculation exists because of a trade-off in combustion: the hotter and more efficiently an engine burns fuel, the more nitrogen oxides it produces. Feeding some inert exhaust gas back into the intake dilutes the charge and lowers the peak temperature, which cuts those emissions considerably. It works well and it has one obvious drawback, which is that exhaust gas is dirty and it is being deliberately routed back through the clean side of the engine.

- Understand what it is trying to achieve.Lower peak combustion temperature, which reduces nitrogen oxide formation. It is an emissions device rather than a performance device, and it operates mainly at light and moderate load, not under full acceleration where the engine needs all the clean air it can get.
- Understand why it clogs.Exhaust gas carries soot, and the intake side carries oil vapour from the crankcase breather. Where the two meet, they form a thick carbon deposit. On a diesel doing short journeys the deposits never get hot enough to burn off, and they build up over years until the valve sticks or the passage narrows.
- Recognise the stuck-open symptoms.Exhaust gas being fed in when the engine wants clean air: rough idle, hesitation, a lumpy misfire feel at low speed, sometimes black smoke and poor economy. The engine feels like it is running out of breath at exactly the moment you ask for more.
- Recognise the stuck-shut symptoms.Often no driveability change at all, just an engine management light and a stored code, because the engine control unit can see the valve is not moving as commanded. On some cars it triggers limp mode. It also raises emissions, which can show at the MOT.
- Know how it relates to the particulate filter.On a diesel, a failing EGR and a blocking DPF often appear together, because both are driven by the same cause: short journeys, low load, and exhaust temperatures that never rise enough. Treating one and ignoring the other tends to produce a repeat visit.
- Have the codes read before anything is replaced.EGR faults produce specific codes, but so do boost, air-flow and particulate-filter faults, and they overlap in symptoms. A code naming the EGR system does not always mean the valve itself — it can be the cooler, the position sensor, the vacuum or electric actuator, or a blocked passage upstream.
- Understand the cleaning option and its limits.Some valves can be removed and cleaned, and some engines respond to an induction or intake cleaning service. It is worth asking about on a valve that is merely coked rather than mechanically failed. It is not a permanent solution if the driving pattern that caused it does not change.
- Change the driving pattern where you can.A regular sustained run at higher load — a motorway journey rather than four miles to a station — raises exhaust temperatures and genuinely slows deposit build-up. It also helps the particulate filter regenerate. This is the cheapest intervention available and the only one that addresses the cause.
- Refuse an EGR delete.Blanking the valve or removing it in software is offered as a permanent fix and it changes the vehicle's emissions system so that it no longer complies. It is a modification that must be declared to an insurer, and it makes the vehicle non-compliant for road use. It also usually requires software changes that show up on any subsequent diagnostic session.
- Weigh the repair against the car.On some engines the EGR valve is accessible and moderate to replace; on others it is buried under the intake manifold and the labour dominates the bill. On an older car this is a repair worth costing properly before deciding, alongside anything else the car needs.
Tips
- If a garage quotes for an EGR valve on the strength of a code alone, ask whether the cooler, the actuator and the intake passages have been checked. The valve is the most replaced part in that system and not always the faulty one.
- Keep a note of when the light appears — cold start only, after a long run, only in traffic. EGR faults are load-dependent and the pattern narrows the diagnosis considerably.
- If you are choosing between a petrol and a diesel and most of your driving is short journeys, this and the particulate filter are the two reasons the diesel is usually the wrong choice.

- Blanking the valve to stop the light coming on — It changes the vehicle's emissions system so that it no longer complies with the requirements for road use, and it must be declared to an insurer as a modification.
- Replacing the valve without changing anything else — The same short-journey, low-load pattern that clogged the first one will clog the second. Address the driving pattern or expect a repeat.
- Assuming an EGR code means a faulty valve — The code reports that the system is not behaving as commanded. The cooler, the actuator, the position sensor or a blocked passage can all produce it.
If it doesn't work
Rough idle and hesitation at low speed on a diesel
Cause: EGR stuck partly open, feeding exhaust gas when clean air is needed — Fix: Have the codes read and the valve's operation checked. Cleaning is sometimes viable on a coked valve; a mechanically failed one needs replacing.
Engine light on but the car drives normally
Cause: Valve stuck shut or not moving as commanded — Fix: Get the code read rather than ignoring it. It usually raises emissions, which matters at the MOT even when nothing feels wrong.
EGR and particulate filter warnings together
Cause: A driving pattern that never gets the exhaust system hot — Fix: Treat them as one problem. Both need sustained higher-load running, and fixing one without changing the pattern leaves the other to fail next.
The fault returns within months of a new valve
Cause: Underlying oil vapour or soot loading, or an unaddressed root cause — Fix: Ask about the crankcase breather system and the intake passages. Heavy oil vapour from a worn engine loads a new valve very quickly.
