Short answer
Work with the wedge shape rather than against it: pull-out drawers on castors in the low end, hanging or shelving in the tall end, and doors that open on the tall side. Check first what services are in there — a gas meter, consumer unit or stopcock must stay accessible and ventilated, and that constraint usually decides the whole design.
Understairs space is generous in volume and awkward in shape, which is why it is so often a heap of coats and a vacuum cleaner. The shape is the problem to solve: usable height runs from about 2m at one end to nothing at the other, so everything depends on giving each depth band a job that suits its height.

Step by step
- Find out what services are in there first.Gas meter, electricity meter, consumer unit, stopcock, boiler, telecoms. Every one of those imposes access requirements, and gas meters need ventilation. This survey determines what is possible before any design decision is made.
- Measure the section, not just the plan.The height at the front, the height at the back, the depth and the width, plus the angle of the underside. A drawing of the slope is what tells you which zones can take what.
- Assign a use to each height band.Above about 1800mm: coats, a full-height cupboard, hanging storage. 1200 to 1800mm: shelving, a desk, a small worktop. 600 to 1200mm: drawers, boxes, shoes. Below 600mm: pull-out units on castors, because you cannot see or reach into the back of it any other way.
- Make the low end pull out rather than open.This is the key move. A wedge-shaped drawer or trolley on castors that pulls out into the hall makes the whole depth reachable. A hinged door on the low end gives you a cave nothing comes out of.
- Decide on the primary use honestly.Storage, a cloakroom, a desk nook, a utility cupboard or a pantry. A cloakroom under the stairs needs at least 1900 to 2000mm of headroom over the pan area and a soil connection, which rules it out in many houses — check that before anything else.
- Keep the meters and consumer unit accessible.Not behind a fixed panel, not behind stored items, not obstructed by a shelf. A hinged or removable access panel is acceptable; permanently building over them is not.
- Do not cut into the stair structure.The strings, treads and any supporting studwork are structural. Fixings into the underside of the stairs must go into timber and must not weaken it. If anything needs removing, take advice first.
- Think about the escape route.The hall and stairs are how everyone leaves the house. Do not store flammable materials there, keep the route clear, and be careful about anything that could obstruct the stairs if it fell.
- Light it.It is the one thing that turns understairs storage from a heap into a usable cupboard. A battery LED strip or a switched light — but any new fixed wiring in a cupboard containing a consumer unit is work for an electrician.
- Finish it so it reads as part of the house.Doors that match the other joinery, or a flush panelled front, or open shelving painted the wall colour. The difference between a built-in and a bodge is almost entirely the front face.
Tips
- Pull-out units are available as kits, and they are the single thing that makes the deep low end genuinely usable. Build or buy, but do not put a door there.
- If the space opens into a hallway, shallow open shelving or hooks on the tall end handle the daily coats-and-shoes problem better than a deep cupboard does.
- Measure the widest thing you want to store — a vacuum, a folded pushchair, a stepladder — before designing anything. Those items usually decide the internal divisions.

- Boxing in a gas or electricity meter or a consumer unit — They must remain accessible, and gas meters need ventilation. It also causes problems at sale and at every meter reading and service visit.
- Putting a hinged door on the low end — You cannot see or reach into a wedge. Nothing that goes in comes out again. Pull-out units are the answer.
- Storing paint, aerosols or fuel under the stairs — It is the escape route from the whole house. Flammable materials do not belong on it.
- Planning a cloakroom without checking headroom and drainage — You need roughly 1900 to 2000mm of headroom over the pan area and a viable soil connection. Both are commonly absent and both are expensive to discover late.
If it doesn't work

Cause: Deep cupboard with a hinged door — Fix: Replace with pull-out drawers or trolleys on castors sized to the wedge. It is the standard solution because it is the only one that works.
The meter reader cannot get to the meter
Cause: Storage or joinery built across it — Fix: Fit a removable or hinged access panel. Keep the area in front of it clear as a permanent rule.
The space is damp or smells musty
Cause: No ventilation, often combined with an external wall behind — Fix: Ventilate it — a vent in the door or a gap at the top and bottom — and keep stored items off the floor. Check for a leak at the stopcock while you are there.
The cupboard door fouls the newel post or the hall
Cause: Hinged door in a narrow hallway — Fix: Sliding, bi-fold, or a pull-out unit that needs no door swing at all.
