How do I make a stair safer?

Short answer
A handrail you can grip the whole way, a light switch at both ends, and a clearly visible edge to every step. Those three cover most falls. Loose carpet and clutter on treads are the other two, and both are free to fix.
Stair falls happen because of what the foot expects and does not find. Most of the fixes are about making the stair predictable rather than about adding equipment.

Step by step
- Sort the lighting first.Two-way switching so the light works from both top and bottom. Anyone who goes up or down in the dark rather than walking back to a switch is taking the biggest single risk on the stair.
- Light the treads, not the ceiling.What matters is seeing the edge of each step. A bright ceiling light that leaves the treads in shadow is worse than a dimmer light angled down the flight.
- Add a night light.A plug-in sensor light at the top and bottom costs very little and covers the trip to the bathroom, which is when a large share of falls happen.
- Check the handrail runs the full length.It should start before the first step and continue past the last. A rail that stops short leaves you unsupported at exactly the point where the step pattern changes.
- Check you can actually grip it.A rail you can close your hand around is far more use than a wide flat one you can only rest a palm on. Diameter of around 40 to 50mm is the usual guidance.
- Make sure it is genuinely solid.Pull hard on it. A handrail is only useful if it holds a falling adult's weight, which means fixings into studs or solid masonry, not into plasterboard alone.
- Consider a second rail.A rail on both sides doubles the options and helps anyone carrying something or with weakness on one side. It is a modest job and makes a real difference.
- Make the step edges visible.A contrasting nosing on each tread. Uniformly coloured carpeted stairs are genuinely hard to read, especially in low light and for anyone with reduced vision.
- Fix loose or worn carpet immediately.Rucked carpet, a lifted edge or a worn nosing is the classic trip. Re-stretch or re-fix it — this is not something to leave until the stairs are redone.
- Check every tread is the same.An inconsistent riser height, particularly the first or last step, catches people out because the foot has learned the rhythm. If one step differs, mark it clearly.
- Keep the stairs completely clear.Nothing stored on a tread, ever, including things placed there to go up later. It is the most common avoidable hazard and it costs nothing to change.
- Deal with anything you carry regularly.A basket at the top and bottom rather than carrying armfuls that block the view of your feet and occupy the hand that should be on the rail.
- Fit stairgates correctly for young children.Screw-fitted at the top of the stairs without exception. Pressure-fitted gates are for the bottom only, because a pressure gate at the top can be pushed out and become the fall.
- Check the balustrade spacing.Gaps should not allow a small child through or a head to become trapped — the usual figure is under 100mm. Horizontal rails that can be climbed are a separate risk.
- Adapt for reduced mobility.Rails both sides, a half-landing chair, non-slip nosings and improved lighting. Occupational therapy assessments through the local authority are free and often result in funded adaptations.
- Look underneath if it creaks or flexes.Movement in a stair is worth investigating from below. Loose wedges and blocks are straightforward to reglue and screw, and a flexing stair is a structural concern rather than a noise.
Tips
- Two-way lighting is the single highest-value change. Going up in the dark is the biggest risk on any stair.
- Pull hard on the handrail. If it moves, it will not hold someone falling.
- Never store anything on a tread, not even briefly. It causes more falls than anything else.
Common mistakes
- Using a pressure-fitted stairgate at the top of the stairs — It relies on friction and can be pushed out of the opening. At the top of a flight that turns the gate itself into the cause of a fall. Top gates must be screwed to the wall.
- Leaving a loose handrail to fix later — A rail that moves gives false confidence — someone grabs it as they slip and it fails at precisely the moment it matters.

Handrail moves when pulled
Cause: Fixings into plasterboard, or worn screw holes — Fix: Refix into studs or solid masonry. Plasterboard fixings alone will not hold a falling adult.
Hard to see the step edges
Cause: Uniform colour and poor lighting — Fix: Fit contrasting nosings and improve the light so it falls on the treads.
Carpet lifting on a tread
Cause: Failed grippers or stretched carpet — Fix: Re-fix or re-stretch it now. A lifted edge is an immediate trip hazard.
One step feels different
Cause: Inconsistent riser height — Fix: Mark it clearly with a contrasting nosing. The foot learns the rhythm and an odd step breaks it.
Stairs flex underfoot
Cause: Loose wedges or blocks beneath — Fix: Inspect from below and reglue and screw the wedges. Persistent flex needs someone to look at it properly.
Questions people ask
What is the most important change to make?
Lighting that works from both ends of the stair. Almost everything else assumes you can see the steps, and the trip to the bathroom at night is when many falls happen.
Do I need a handrail on both sides?
Not required in most existing homes, but it helps considerably — for anyone carrying something, anyone with weakness on one side, and anyone who prefers a particular hand.
Where should stairgates go?
Top and bottom while a child is learning. The top gate must be screw-fitted to the wall; pressure-fitted gates are for the bottom of the stairs only.
