Is a 12V drill enough, or do I need an 18V one?

The smaller platform is not a toy and the larger one is not automatically better — what each size actually runs out of, and which jobs expose the difference.

Short answer

A 12V drill handles flat-pack, shelves, plasterboard, small wall plugs and almost all indoor assembly, and it is dramatically lighter and shorter. An 18V is needed for long screws into structural timber, holes over about 25mm in wood, sustained masonry drilling and the wider tool range that hangs off the same battery. If you are buying one drill for a whole house, buy 18V.

Voltage on a cordless tool is roughly a measure of how hard the tool can push before it stalls. It is not a measure of quality, and a good 12V tool outperforms a bad 18V one at everything. The honest question is not which is better but where the 12V runs out, because for a great many households it never does.

Step by step

  1. Recognise what 12V genuinely does well.Assembling furniture, hanging shelves and curtain poles, fitting handles and hinges, drilling pilot holes, driving screws up to about 60mm into softwood, and small wall plugs in soft brick. That is most domestic DIY by volume.
  2. Recognise the size and weight difference.A 12V drill is roughly half the weight and noticeably shorter nose to tail. Overhead, inside a cupboard, or up a ladder, that is not a minor comfort — it is the difference between finishing the job accurately and rushing it.
  3. Identify where 12V runs out.Long structural screws, coach screws, decking, joists, spade bits and hole saws over about 25mm, mixing, and any masonry beyond a small plug. The tool will stall or the pack will sag and cut out under load.
  4. Check the range on the platform, not the drill.The battery family is the real purchase. 12V ranges are usually short — drill, driver, maybe a multi-tool. 18V ranges run to circular saws, planers, garden tools and site lights. If you might want any of those, 18V is the platform.
  5. Consider owning both.Trades routinely do. A 12V driver lives in the bag for everything light and a bigger tool comes out for the hard jobs. As a second purchase it is a far better upgrade than a second 18V drill.
  6. Ignore the voltage as a proxy for quality.Brushless motors, electronics and build quality vary enormously within a voltage. A brushless 12V from a serious maker will outwork a brushed budget 18V on almost everything short of stalling.
  7. Decide by the heaviest job, then by hand size.If the heaviest job is genuinely light, take the smaller tool and enjoy using it. Nobody has ever regretted a drill being too easy to hold.

Tips

  • Some makers sell a 12V and an 18V range that share nothing, and some blur the naming so a pack looks cross-compatible when it is not. Check the exact battery mount, not the brand.
  • If your main frustration is with driving screws rather than drilling, an 18V drill is not the answer — an impact driver of either voltage is.
  • Weight is felt most at head height and least on a bench. If most of your work is overhead, weight one grade lower than the capability charts suggest.

Common mistakes

  • Buying 18V for a flat where the heaviest job is a curtain pole — You pay in weight and bulk every single time you pick it up, for capability that never gets used.
  • Buying 12V and then trying to drill a 50mm hole through a joist — The tool stalls, the pack goes into protection, and repeated stalling is genuinely hard on both. The limit is real.

Questions people ask

Can a 12V drill go into brick?

A 12V combi will make a 5 or 6mm hole in soft brick or lightweight block for an ordinary wall plug, slowly. It will not make a 10mm hole in dense brick or anything at all in concrete.

Is a bigger battery on a 12V drill the same as an 18V?

No. Capacity extends runtime; voltage is what determines how hard the tool can push. A 6Ah 12V pack still stalls where an 18V does not.

What about 10.8V — is that different from 12V?

Same thing. 10.8V is the nominal voltage of a three-cell lithium pack and 12V is its voltage straight off the charger. Manufacturers use whichever number they prefer.
