Is a 5Ah battery more powerful than a 2Ah one?
What amp-hours actually buy, the one situation where a bigger pack genuinely does make a tool perform better, and why two medium packs beat one large one.

Short answer
No โ amp-hours measure capacity, not power. A 5Ah pack runs roughly two and a half times as long as a 2Ah pack of the same voltage, and weighs a lot more. The exception is at the very top of a tool's demand, where a small pack can sag under high current and cut out, which reads as less power but is really a limitation of the small pack.
Two numbers appear on every pack and they measure different things. Voltage is roughly how hard the tool can push. Amp-hours are how long it can keep pushing. Marketing blurs them constantly, and the confusion costs people money โ usually in the form of one enormous heavy pack when two medium ones would have served far better. The diagram separates them.

- Read Ah as tank size.Amp-hours describe how much charge the pack holds. Doubling it roughly doubles the runtime for the same work, and changes nothing about how hard the tool can push at any instant.
- Read voltage as pressure.Volts determine the force available. That is why an 18V tool drives screws a 12V one stalls on, regardless of the amp-hours on either.
- Understand the real exception.A pack has an internal resistance and a current limit set by how many cells share the load. A small pack under a very heavy load sags in voltage and the protection circuit may cut in. On demanding tools โ circular saws, grinders, big augers โ a larger pack really does perform better, but because the small one was limiting rather than the large one adding.
- Weigh the weight.A 5Ah 18V pack is substantially heavier than a 2Ah, and all of it is at the base of the tool. Overhead, on a ladder or through a long day, that is felt continuously.
- Prefer two medium packs to one large one.One charging, one working, and the tool stays light. Total capacity is similar, downtime is zero, and if one pack fails you still have a working tool.
- Match the pack to the tool.A drill or an impact driver is happy on a small pack. A circular saw, a grinder, a mower or a chainsaw wants a large one, both for runtime and for current delivery.
- Check what a kit actually includes.Deals are often built around one small pack. Adding a second pack later at full retail can cost more than a better kit would have, so compare on the complete set rather than on the tool.
- Ignore Wh figures unless flying.Watt-hours are volts multiplied by amp-hours and are the honest comparison between platforms of different voltages. In practice they matter mainly for airline limits on carrying batteries.
Tips
- A pack advertised as high-output or with a different cell format may deliver more current at the same amp-hour rating. That is a real difference and it is not visible from the Ah figure.
- If a tool cuts out abruptly under load and restarts after a few seconds, the pack is hitting a protection limit, not running flat. A larger pack usually fixes it.
- Small packs charge much faster. A 2Ah pack on a fast charger is often back before you have finished the work the other pack is doing.
Common mistakes
- Buying the largest pack available for a drill โ You pay for weight you carry constantly and runtime you will not use. Drills sip current; the capacity is wasted.
- Assuming a bigger pack makes an underpowered tool cope โ If the tool is stalling because it lacks torque, that is a voltage and gearing problem. Capacity does not address it.

Will a 5Ah pack charge my tool faster or make it spin faster?
No to both. Speed is set by the motor and the gearbox at a given voltage. The pack only determines how long it can keep doing it.
Can I use a large pack on a small tool?
Yes, on the same platform. It will run for a long time and make the tool nose-heavy and awkward, which is why most people end up with a small pack for the drill.
Is a 4Ah pack twice as good as a 2Ah?
Twice the runtime, roughly twice the weight, and typically less than twice the price. Whether that is better depends entirely on whether you were running out of charge or running out of patience with the weight.
