Why does my cordless drill die so fast in cold weather?

Cold does not remove charge, it hides it — what actually happens in the cells, and the four habits that get a winter's work out of the same packs.

Short answer

Cold raises the internal resistance of the cells, so voltage sags under load and the tool cuts out with charge still in the pack. Keep spare packs indoors or in an inside pocket, warm a cold pack before use rather than working it hard, never charge a frozen pack, and expect normal runtime to return as it warms.

Nothing is wrong with the battery. Lithium cells work by moving ions through an electrolyte, and cold makes that electrolyte more viscous, which raises internal resistance. Under load the voltage drops further than it would when warm, the tool's cut-off sees a low voltage and shuts down, and the pack reads as flat while still holding most of its charge.

Step by step

  1. Keep the packs warm, not the tool.The tool copes with cold far better than the cells do. Spare packs in a coat pocket, indoors, or in the car footwell make more difference than anything else.
  2. Warm a cold pack before working it hard.Twenty minutes indoors. Working a very cold pack at high current is what actually damages it, as opposed to merely reducing runtime.
  3. Never charge a frozen pack.Below freezing, charging lithium causes permanent internal damage. Good chargers refuse; if yours does not, wait anyway.
  4. Warm it gently, never with heat.Room temperature, a pocket, a warm van. Not a radiator, not a hairdryer and not a heat gun. Rapid heating of a lithium pack is its own hazard.
  5. Use larger packs in winter.A bigger pack has more cells sharing the current, so it sags less under load. If you work outside in winter, this is one of the few situations where the larger pack genuinely performs better.
  6. Rotate two packs.One working, one warming indoors. It is the standard trade approach to a cold day and it roughly doubles the usable time.
  7. Store them inside over winter.At around half charge, at room temperature. A pack that has sat in a freezing shed all winter at low charge is the pack that will not wake up in spring.

Tips

  • Corded tools are unaffected by cold. For a long winter job outdoors, a corded drill and an extension lead is often the pragmatic answer.
  • The tool cutting out abruptly rather than fading is the signature of protection cutting in, not of a pack running down. A pack that is genuinely empty usually fades first.
  • Do not leave packs in a vehicle overnight in winter and then charge them first thing. That is the exact sequence that damages cells.

If it doesn't work

Tool cuts out after a few screws on a cold morning

Cause: Voltage sag under load in a cold pack — Fix: Bring the pack indoors and let it warm to room temperature. Most of the charge is still there and will be available once it is warm.

Fuel gauge shows full, tool runs for a minute

Cause: Same cause — the gauge reads a resting voltage, the tool reads it under load — Fix: Warm the pack. A resting gauge reading on a cold pack is optimistic and does not reflect what the tool sees.

Charger refuses a pack brought in from the shed

Cause: Pack below its minimum charging temperature — Fix: Let it reach room temperature first. Charging a lithium pack below freezing plates lithium metal onto the anode and does permanent damage, which is why the charger refuses.

Runtime is permanently worse since the winter

Cause: The pack was charged or heavily worked while very cold — Fix: That damage does not reverse. The lesson is procedural rather than repairable: warm before charging, warm before heavy use.

Pack goes flat in the shed without being used

Cause: Self-discharge plus a very cold and then warm cycle — Fix: Store packs indoors at around half charge. Cold storage is not itself harmful to a resting pack, but a shed that swings between freezing and warm is a poor environment.

Condensation inside the tool when brought in

Cause: A cold tool warming in a humid room — Fix: Let it warm inside its case or a bag so the temperature change is gradual, and dry it before it goes back out. Condensation on electronics is a real cause of failure.

Does cold permanently damage a battery?

Cold storage of a resting pack does not, particularly. Charging a frozen pack, or drawing heavy current from one, does cause permanent damage.

Will runtime come back when it warms up?

Yes, if the pack has not been damaged. Reduced capacity in the cold is a temporary effect of chemistry, not lost charge.

Is it worth buying a cold-weather battery?

There is no separate domestic product for this. The practical measures — keeping packs warm, using larger ones, rotating them — do everything a special pack would.
