Short answer
Electrically it is usually harmless — a modern charger stops when the pack is full and does not keep pushing current. The real objections are practical and safety-related: heat shortens life, a pack sitting at full charge ages faster than one at half, and unattended charging is where battery fires happen. Take it off when it is full.
Chargers changed and the advice did not. Old chargers trickled current indefinitely and cooked packs. A modern lithium charger terminates the charge and then does nothing until the pack self-discharges slightly. That makes the electrical question fairly dull, and leaves two things that genuinely matter: how a battery ages, and where you leave it plugged in.

- Understand what the charger does at full.It charges at a constant current, then holds a constant voltage while the current tails off, then stops. It does not continue pushing energy into a full pack, which is why leaving one on is not the disaster it once was.
- Know that full charge is not the best storage state.A lithium cell held at full charge degrades measurably faster than one at around half. A pack that lives permanently on the charger will lose capacity sooner than one taken off and stored.
- Watch the heat.Chargers run warm, and a pack sitting in a warm charger is being aged by that heat as well. Heat is the main enemy of lithium cells, ahead of almost everything else.
- Take the safety point seriously.The risk is small per charge and it is not zero, and it multiplies by the number of unattended hours. Charging while you are awake, present and in the same part of the house is a genuine reduction in exposure.
- Choose where charging happens deliberately.A garage, a utility room or a workshop on a hard surface. Not the hallway, not under the stairs, not on a landing, and not next to the coats — those are the escape routes.
- Let a hot pack cool before charging.Straight off heavy work, a pack is well above room temperature. Most good chargers refuse until it cools, which is a feature; forcing it through is not possible and should not be.
- Store at around half charge for the long term.Going away, or putting the tools away for the winter: charge or run the packs to roughly half, keep them somewhere at room temperature, and top them up every few months.
- Have a working smoke alarm where you charge.If charging happens in a garage or an outbuilding, that space needs detection too. The whole point of charging away from living space is undermined if nothing tells you it has gone wrong.
Tips
- Charging is one of the few things worth putting on a timer plug — set it for a period when you are awake and at home, so nothing charges overnight by accident.
- The convenience of leaving a pack on the charger is real, and the practical compromise most people land on is charging on the day of use and taking packs off once green.
- A pack that has become a workshop's permanent charger occupant is usually the one that dies first, and the owner concludes the pack was faulty.

Will leaving it on the charger overcharge it?
A modern charger will not overcharge a healthy pack — it terminates. The risks are heat, ageing at full charge, and the consequences of an unattended fault.
Should I run a pack flat before charging?
No. That was nickel-cadmium advice. Deep discharge is one of the things that damages lithium cells most, and partial charges are entirely fine.
Is it safe to charge tool batteries in the house at all?
Yes, with sensible precautions: attended, on a hard surface, clear of flammables, not on an escape route, and with a working smoke alarm. The precautions are about consequence, not likelihood.
