Packs are proprietary — different mounts, different latches and data pins the tool reads. Adaptors exist and they bypass the communication between pack and tool, which is what protects both. A reputable third-party pack for the same platform is a reasonable saving on an old tool; an adaptor between brands is not worth the risk on anything.
Batteries are where the money is in cordless tools, and everyone knows it, which is why the aftermarket is enormous. Some of it is fine and some of it is genuinely dangerous, and the difference is not visible from the listing. What matters is understanding what a pack does besides storing energy.

- Treat cross-brand adaptors sceptically.An adaptor makes a physical connection and passes power. It cannot make brand A's pack talk to brand B's tool, so the protections that depend on that communication are gone. Some adaptors also allow a tool to draw more than the pack is rated for.
- Separate third-party from cross-brand.A third-party pack made to fit your platform is a different proposition from an adaptor. Reputable aftermarket makers do include protection circuitry, use branded cells and stand behind the product.
- Judge a third-party pack by what it discloses.Named cells, a stated protection circuit, a real warranty, a seller with a returns address, and appropriate certification marks. A pack with none of those and an implausible amp-hour figure is exactly the pack that fails.
- Accept the warranty consequence.Using a non-genuine pack will usually void the tool's warranty, and if it damages the tool you will have no recourse. On a tool still in warranty, that alone settles it.
- Consider where the tool sits in its life.For a ten-year-old drill whose genuine packs cost more than a replacement tool, a decent third-party pack is a sensible economy. For a new expensive tool, it is not.
- Charge any non-genuine pack carefully.On a hard non-combustible surface, away from anything flammable, never overnight, never unattended, and never in a hallway or by the front door where a fire would block your way out.

- Implausible amp-hour claims are the clearest warning sign. A pack the same physical size as a genuine 5Ah cannot hold 9Ah, because the cells are the same size and chemistry.
- Some manufacturers sell an official adaptor within their own family — for example to run older packs on newer tools. Those are engineered and supported, and are a different thing entirely from a generic adaptor.
- If cost is the driver, look at whether the brand sells a slower charger or a smaller pack as a genuine budget option before going aftermarket.
Common mistakes
- Buying the cheapest listing with the highest claimed capacity — Those two facts together are the signature of a pack with overstated cells and minimal protection electronics.
- Using an adaptor to run a high-demand tool — The tool will draw whatever it wants, and without the pack's own protection recognising the tool, the cells can be pushed well past their safe current.
- Charging an unbranded pack overnight in the house — Lithium failures develop fast and produce their own oxygen. Being awake and present is the difference between a ruined charger and a house fire.
