Why can my phone not find my printer?
Phone printing relies on discovery, and discovery breaks in specific, predictable ways. The five network arrangements that hide a printer from a phone, and how to print anyway.

Short answer
Phones find printers by broadcasting on the local network, so both must be on the same network and that network must allow devices to see each other. The usual causes are the phone on 5 GHz while the printer is on 2.4 GHz under a different name, a guest network, client isolation, a VPN, or two routers. Turn the VPN off and check both are on the same network name first.
There is no clever setup to phone printing when it works — the phone shouts on the local network, printers that support the standard answer, and the printer appears. That makes it very easy and very fragile, because anything that stops that broadcast reaching the printer makes it invisible with no error message that explains why.
Step by step
- Check the phone and the printer are on the same network name.If your router presents 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under different names, a 2.4 GHz-only printer and a 5 GHz phone are on separate networks as far as discovery is concerned. This is the most common cause.
- Turn off any VPN on the phone.A VPN that routes all traffic captures local discovery as well, so the phone can no longer see anything on your own network. Turning it off temporarily is a one-tap test.
- Check neither is on the guest network.Guest networks isolate devices by design. A printer set up on the guest network for convenience becomes invisible to everything on the main one.
- Look for client isolation on the main network.Sometimes called AP isolation or wireless client isolation, this stops wireless devices seeing each other. A few routers ship with it on. It is in the wireless settings.
- Check for two routers.If the printer is plugged into one router and the phone is on the wifi of another, discovery does not cross between them. Getting everything onto one network is the fix.
- Confirm the printer supports phone printing at all.iPhones need AirPrint; Android needs Mopria or a manufacturer plugin. Almost every printer sold in the last decade supports at least one. An older printer may need the manufacturer's own app instead.
- Install the manufacturer's app as a fallback.Manufacturer apps often find printers by other means, including a direct wireless connection to the printer itself, and can print when the standard route fails.
- Use the printer's direct wireless mode if all else fails.Most wireless printers can create their own network for a phone to join directly. It works without any home network at all, at the cost of the phone losing internet access while connected.
If it doesn't work
Found once, never again
Cause: The printer's address changed, or it is asleep — Fix: Reserve the printer's address on the router, and lengthen or disable its wireless sleep setting. Both are permanent fixes.
iPhone finds it, Android does not
Cause: Missing Mopria support on the Android device — Fix: Install the Mopria print service or the manufacturer's plugin from the app store, then enable it in the phone's printing settings.
Works at home, not on a work phone
Cause: A managed device policy or always-on VPN — Fix: Managed phones frequently block local network discovery. Check with your IT policy — this is not something you can fix on the phone.
Prints but only from the manufacturer app
Cause: The printer does not support the standard protocols — Fix: Nothing is wrong; the app is the supported route for that model. Set it as the way you print from phones.

Do I need the printer connected to wifi, or can I print over Bluetooth?
Almost all home printing from a phone is over wifi. Bluetooth printing exists on a few small photo and label printers but is not the normal route.
Why does my printer appear and disappear?
Usually the printer's power-saving sleep, which drops the wireless connection. Increasing the sleep delay in the printer's settings normally cures it.
Can I print from my phone when I am not at home?
Some manufacturers offer an email-to-print or cloud print service that gives the printer its own address. It works, but it routes your document through the manufacturer, which is worth knowing before you send anything sensitive.
