Why will my smart plug or doorbell not connect to my wifi?

Almost every cheap smart device can only use the 2.4 GHz band, and almost every modern router hides that band behind a single network name. The four workarounds, in order of how little they disturb.

Short answer

Most smart plugs, bulbs, doorbells and cameras have a 2.4 GHz radio only. If your router presents both bands under one name, the setup app on your phone may be sitting on 5 GHz and cannot hand the device a network it can see. Force your phone onto 2.4 GHz for the duration of setup — usually by temporarily disabling the 5 GHz band in the router, or by using a guest network set to 2.4 GHz only.

Do this first

This is the single most common smart home failure and it is almost never the device. Manufacturers fit 2.4 GHz radios because they are cheap, low power and travel further through walls, which is exactly what a doorbell needs. Meanwhile routers have moved to presenting 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one name so devices roam between them invisibly — convenient for phones and laptops, fatal for setup processes that ask your phone to pass its current network to the new device.

Step by step

  1. Confirm the device is 2.4 GHz only.Check the specification on the box or the manufacturer's page. Wording like 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n with no mention of 5 GHz or 802.11ac confirms it. Almost all sub-£30 smart devices are in this category.
  2. Put the device into pairing mode properly.Nearly all of them need a hold of five to ten seconds on a button, or a specific number of power cycles, until an indicator flashes at a particular rate. A device that is not flashing the right pattern is not listening, and no amount of network fiddling will help.
  3. Move the device and your phone near the router for setup.Setup exchanges are more fragile than normal use. Get everything into one room for the pairing, then move the device to where it will live.
  4. Force your phone onto 2.4 GHz.The cleanest way is to log into the router and temporarily switch off the 5 GHz radio, pair everything, then switch it back on. Your phone will drop to 2.4 GHz automatically, the setup app will pass the right network across, and the device stays paired afterwards because it remembers the network name.
  5. Or use a guest network set to 2.4 GHz only.Many routers let you run a guest network on one band. Set it to 2.4 GHz, give it its own name, join your phone to it and pair the device there. This has the side benefit of keeping the device off your main network permanently.
  6. Check the password for characters the device dislikes.A surprising number of cheap devices choke on apostrophes, ampersands, spaces and very long passwords. If everything else is right, a plain alphanumeric password on a 2.4 GHz guest network solves it.
  7. Turn off any client isolation on the network you are pairing on.Guest networks often isolate devices from each other by default, which stops your phone talking to the new device during setup. Look for AP isolation, client isolation or a setting about guests seeing each other, and disable it while pairing.
  8. Grant the app local network and location permission.On both iOS and Android, an app that has been refused local network access — or location, which is used as a proxy for scanning nearby wifi — will fail at exactly this stage with an unhelpful message.

Tips

  • If you split the bands permanently by giving 2.4 GHz its own name, use a name you will recognise later — many people end up with a smart-device network and never go back to one name.
  • Some routers offer a temporary 2.4 GHz-only setup mode for exactly this purpose. Check your router's app before disabling radios manually.
  • Keep a note of which network each smart device is on. It saves an hour the day you change broadband provider.

If it doesn't work

Setup gets to 95 per cent then fails

Cause: The device joined the wifi but could not reach the manufacturer's server — Fix: Check the network has internet. Also check the router is not blocking it — some parental control or filtering settings block unknown devices reaching the internet on first connection.

The device never appears in the app at all

Cause: It is not in pairing mode, or the phone is on the wrong network — Fix: Reset the device to factory state using the documented button hold, watch for the correct flash pattern, and confirm the phone shows the 2.4 GHz network name before opening the app.

It pairs, then drops off within a day

Cause: Signal at its permanent location, not the pairing — Fix: Check the signal where it actually lives. A doorbell on an outside wall or a plug behind a fridge can be far weaker than it seemed. Move a mesh node or add one nearer that point.

It worked for a year and now will not reconnect

Cause: The wifi name, password or router has changed — Fix: The device stores the network it was given and has no way to be told about a change. Factory reset it and pair again on the new network.

Questions people ask

Why do manufacturers still use 2.4 GHz?

It travels further and through more walls at the same power, the radio chips are cheaper, and it draws less current, which matters for anything battery powered. For a device sending a few hundred bytes about a switch state, the speed of 5 GHz is worthless.

Will splitting my bands permanently slow my phone down?

No, as long as you join phones and laptops to the 5 GHz name. Some people prefer split names precisely because it lets them control which band each device uses.

Can I just buy a device that supports 5 GHz?

Some newer and more expensive ones do, and dual-band smart devices are becoming more common. It is worth checking before buying if you have a lot of trouble with this, but it usually costs more for no benefit once set up.
