Short answer
5GHz is faster over short distances; 2.4GHz travels much further through walls. Use 5GHz near the router and 2.4GHz for distant rooms and smart home devices, most of which only support 2.4GHz anyway.
Both bands come out of the same router and they behave very differently. Knowing which is which explains why a phone is fast in one room and unusable two walls away.

- Understand the trade-off.5GHz: much faster, shorter range, poor through walls, far less congested. 2.4GHz: slower, longer range, better through walls, crowded with neighbours and other devices.
- Use 5GHz where you can.Same room or next door to the router. Streaming, large downloads, video calls. It is dramatically faster where it reaches.
- Use 2.4GHz for distance.Upstairs, the far end of the house, the garden. A slower connection that works beats a faster one that drops.
- Know that most smart devices need 2.4GHz.Smart plugs, bulbs, thermostats and doorbells overwhelmingly only support 2.4GHz. This trips people up constantly during setup.
- Decide whether to split the network names.One combined name lets devices choose, which is simpler but sometimes leaves a device clinging to the wrong band. Separate names give control at the cost of managing two.
- Split them temporarily if a device will not connect.The standard fix for a smart device that cannot see the network during setup — separate the bands, connect it to the 2.4GHz one, then recombine if you prefer.
- Check whether your router supports 6GHz.Newer routers add a third band: faster still, even shorter range, and almost no congestion. Same principle, further along the trade-off.
- Do not force a device onto 5GHz for the sake of it.A device sitting at the edge of 5GHz range performs worse than one comfortably on 2.4GHz.

- If a smart plug or bulb will not connect, the band is almost always the reason. Check before assuming the device is faulty.
- 2.4GHz is shared with microwaves, cordless phones and Bluetooth. In a flat, it is usually the more congested band despite being the more reliable one for range.
- Combined network names work well for most households. Split them only when something specific needs it.
