Is double digging worth doing?

The four situations where it earns its enormous effort, the reasons it fell out of favour, and the far cheaper alternative that gets most of the benefit.

Short answer

For an established, reasonably healthy bed: no. Annual double digging destroys structure and buries the biology, and a compost mulch does more for less. It is genuinely worth it in four cases — breaking a deep pan on new ground, establishing a permanent asparagus or rhubarb bed, reclaiming a builders' plot, and preparing a deep bed for long root crops on shallow soil.

Double digging means working the soil to two spade depths: a trench is opened, the bottom of it is broken up with a fork and organic matter worked in, and the next strip's topsoil is turned into it. It was standard Victorian practice on new ground and it is a large amount of work — a day for a bed most people would mulch in twenty minutes. The question is not whether it works, because it does. It is whether the thing it fixes is the thing you have.

Safety

Double digging is genuinely heavy work — several hours of repeated lifting and twisting with a loaded spade. Warm up, work in short sessions over several days rather than one long one, keep the load close to your body, and stop if your back complains. Check for buried services before excavating to two spade depths anywhere near a house, a meter or a supply route.

Step by step

  1. Establish whether you have a deep problem at all.Push a rod in. If it reaches 300mm easily, the subsoil is not your limiting factor and double digging is solving a problem you do not have. Compaction below 250mm, or a bed that has never been cultivated, is the case that justifies it.
  2. Consider the four genuine cases.Breaking a machinery pan on a new-build or reclaimed plot. Establishing asparagus, rhubarb or a fruit bed that will not be disturbed for fifteen years. Bringing a neglected or builders'-rubble plot into cultivation. Growing long-rooted parsnips or carrots where the topsoil is thin.
  3. Rule out the alternatives first.A broadfork breaks a pan to 350mm without inverting anything, in a fraction of the time. Deep-rooted green manures do it biologically over a season. A raised bed sidesteps the question entirely. All three are less work.
  4. If you are doing it, mark out and open the first trench.A trench one spade wide and one spade deep across the end of the bed. Barrow that soil to the far end — you will need it to fill the last trench.
  5. Break the base of the trench without lifting it.Drive the fork into the subsoil at the bottom of the trench to its full depth and lever, working along the trench. Do not bring subsoil to the surface. This step is the entire point of the exercise.
  6. Work organic matter into the broken base.A layer of well-rotted compost or manure forked lightly into the loosened subsoil. It holds the fracture open and gives roots a reason to go down there.
  7. Turn the next strip's topsoil into the open trench.Which opens the next trench. Keep the topsoil as topsoil — do not mix it into the subsoil layer. Repeat along the bed.
  8. Fill the last trench with the soil from the first.The barrowed soil from the start goes into the final trench. The bed will stand proud for a season and settle.
  9. Then do not do it again.Once is the point. Follow it with permanent beds you never tread on, an annual compost mulch and no further deep cultivation, and the effect lasts for decades.

Tips

  • Autumn is the time. Winter frost works on the rough surface, and the bed settles before spring sowing.
  • The commonest error is bringing subsoil up into the topsoil layer. That reduces fertility for years and is exactly what the method is designed to avoid.
  • Bastard trenching — the older name — describes a single-trench version where only the base is forked and no soil is moved between strips. It gets most of the benefit for perhaps a third of the work.
  • A hired rotavator will not substitute for this. It works the top 150mm and creates a smeared pan directly below its blades.

Alternatives

  • Broadforking: A long-tined fork levered with body weight fractures soil to 300 to 400mm without inverting anything. It reaches most of what double digging reaches, takes an hour rather than a day, and leaves the soil biology in place.
  • Deep-rooted green manures: Fodder radish or tillage radish drive a heavy taproot through compacted layers and rot in place, leaving open channels. Slower, free, and it works while you are elsewhere.
  • A raised bed: Where the underlying problem is thin soil or a pan you cannot reach, building 300mm upward gives you the rooting depth immediately and costs a weekend rather than a back.
  • Annual compost mulching: For an established bed with no deep problem, this is simply the better method: worms take it down, structure improves year on year, and there is no digging at all.

Questions people ask

Why did everyone used to do it?

Because gardens were being made on genuinely unimproved ground, organic matter was scarce, and labour was cheap. On virgin or compacted ground it is effective. Applied annually to an already-good bed, it does more harm than good — which is what changed the advice, not fashion.

Does it improve drainage?

Temporarily and locally. Where the problem is a pan sitting over free-draining subsoil, breaking through it genuinely helps. Where the water table is high or the subsoil is solid clay, you have made a deeper hole for water to sit in.

How long does the effect last?

On a bed that is never walked on afterwards, decades. On a bed that continues to be trodden and rotavated, three or four years. The traffic regime afterwards matters more than the digging.
