How do I insulate a loft hatch?

Short answer
Fix insulation to the top of the hatch door, and draught-seal the edge where it meets the frame. Both matter: the insulation stops heat conducting through the board, and the seal stops warm moist air pouring into the loft around it, which is often the bigger problem.
A loft hatch is typically a thin sheet of board in a ceiling that has a substantial depth of insulation everywhere else. It is a small area, so the heat loss is modest, but it is also usually the largest single air leak between the house and the loft — and warm moist air arriving in a cold loft is how condensation problems start up there.

- Deal with the air gap as well as the insulation.These are two separate jobs and the sealing one is often more valuable. Insulation slows conduction; the seal stops air movement, which carries both heat and moisture.
- Cut insulation to fit the top of the hatch door.Rigid board is easier to fix neatly and adds less weight and bulk than mineral wool; a piece of quilt in a bag also works. Cut it to the door rather than the opening so it does not foul the frame.
- Fix it so it cannot fall off.Adhesive suited to the insulation, or battens around the edge. Insulation that detaches and drops through the hatch is both a nuisance and a hazard.
- Keep the total weight reasonable.A hatch has to be lifted, often at arm's length above your head from a ladder. Thick heavy insulation on a large hatch makes that genuinely awkward and sometimes unsafe.
- Fit draught-proofing strip around the frame.Compressible strip on the rebate the hatch closes onto. This is the part that stops warm air pouring upwards, and it costs very little.
- Make sure the hatch actually closes onto the seal.A hatch that sits loose in its frame will not compress the seal. Some hatches need a simple catch or turn-buckle to pull the door down against the strip.
- Insulate the frame edge too, where you can.Loft insulation is often pulled back well clear of the hatch, leaving an uninsulated collar around the opening. Bringing it up to the frame closes that.
- Do not obstruct the hatch or make it hard to open.It is an access route, sometimes an emergency one. Whatever you fit must still allow the hatch to be opened easily from below.
Tips
- If the hatch is also where a loft ladder is fitted, check the insulation does not foul the ladder mechanism before fixing it permanently.
- Insulated, draught-sealed hatch kits exist and are a reasonable buy if the existing hatch is poor or ill-fitting.
