How do I glue wood to metal so it stays stuck?
Two materials that move at completely different rates, so the adhesive has to hold and flex at once — which families do that, and the preparation each metal needs.

Short answer
Use a two-part epoxy for a rigid, load-carrying bond, or a hybrid MS polymer where the joint is large, exposed or has to flex. Abrade the metal bright, degrease it, and glue within minutes before it oxidises. Wood glue of any kind is useless here, because it needs a porous surface on both sides.
Do this first
This joint fails for a reason that has nothing to do with the glue: timber moves with humidity across its width, metal moves with temperature, and neither cares what the other is doing. A rigid adhesive across a large area of that joint is being asked to resist a force it cannot win against. The successful answers are either a small rigid bond, or a large flexible one.

Step by step
- Decide whether the joint should be rigid or flexible.A small metal fitting on a piece of timber can be rigidly bonded with epoxy. A metal strip along a long timber edge cannot, because seasonal movement across the width of the timber will shear it off. Long joints need a flexible adhesive, or a fixing that allows movement.
- Abrade the metal until it is bright and matt.80 grit paper, an abrasive pad or a wire brush until every trace of coating, oxide and mill finish is gone. On aluminium in particular, the surface you want lasts only minutes before a new oxide layer forms, so do not prepare it in advance.
- Degrease the metal immediately after abrading.Isopropyl alcohol or acetone on a clean cloth, changing the cloth face each wipe. Metal arrives with drawing oil, cutting fluid or protective grease on it whether you can see it or not, and abrading alone smears it.
- Prepare the timber for a flat, close fit.The wood face needs to be flat and clean, not polished. If it has been oiled, waxed or varnished, take that off completely where the adhesive goes — an adhesive stuck to wax is stuck to nothing.
- Mix epoxy properly if you are using it.Accurate ratio, and mix for a full minute scraping the sides and bottom of the pot. Under-mixed epoxy cures soft in patches and is the commonest epoxy failure. A slower-setting epoxy is markedly stronger than a five-minute one.
- Apply to both faces and bring them together with a thin, even film.Wetting both surfaces guarantees contact everywhere. Then press together firmly and hold — a thin bond line is stronger than a thick one, and squeeze-out around the edge is the sign you got there.
- Clamp, weight or tape it for the full handling time.Metal on wood tends to slide while the adhesive is soft. Tape, a weight or a light clamp is enough — do not clamp so hard that you starve the joint of adhesive.
- Add a mechanical fixing if the joint carries any real load.A single screw, rivet or pin turns the adhesive from the sole load path into a gap-filling, stiffening, sealing layer. This is what a professional does on anything that matters, and it removes the peel weakness entirely.
Tips
- Stainless steel, chrome and anodised aluminium are the hardest surfaces here, because their protective layers are exactly what stops adhesion. Abrade hard and glue immediately.
- Galvanised steel is difficult for the same reason and additionally sheds its zinc layer under load. Abrade through to bright metal where the bond goes.
- Drilling a few shallow holes or scoring a cross-hatch in the metal gives the epoxy somewhere mechanical to grip and measurably improves a marginal joint.
- If the wood is oily by nature — teak, iroko, some rosewoods — wipe it with acetone immediately before gluing. The natural oils behave exactly like contamination.
- For a metal fitting in a recess, epoxy plus the recess is far stronger than epoxy alone, because the load then arrives as shear rather than peel.
Common mistakes
- Preparing the metal, then leaving it overnight — A fresh oxide film forms within minutes on aluminium and within hours on steel, and the adhesive bonds to that instead. Prepare and glue in one session.
- Bonding a long metal strip rigidly along a wide timber board — The timber changes width with the seasons and the metal does not. The joint shears itself apart, and no adhesive prevents it. Use a flexible adhesive or slotted fixings.
- Using wood glue because one side is wood — PVA needs to soak into both surfaces to develop strength. On metal it forms a film that peels off in one piece as soon as it is stressed.
If it doesn't work
The adhesive stayed on the wood and came clean off the metal
Cause: The metal was not abraded, not degreased, or had oxidised before bonding — Fix: Take all the old adhesive off, abrade the metal bright, degrease with acetone and rebond within a few minutes.
It held for months then let go along one edge
Cause: Differential movement peeling the joint from the end — Fix: Rebond with a flexible hybrid polymer rather than a rigid epoxy, and add a mechanical fixing at the ends where peel starts.
The epoxy is rubbery rather than hard
Cause: Wrong ratio or incomplete mixing — Fix: Remove it entirely — it will never harden. Measure accurately next time and mix a full minute, scraping the pot.
Questions people ask
Will superglue work for wood to metal?
For a small, close-fitting, low-stress part it will hold. It is brittle and very weak in peel, so it is a temporary answer on anything that flexes, gets warm or is knocked.
What about grab adhesive?
Grab adhesive and hybrid polymers work well for large, non-structural joints such as a metal trim onto a timber batten, and they cope with the differential movement. They are not the answer where the joint has to be rigid.
Does the metal need to be rough or shiny?
Rough and matt. A shiny surface has less area and usually still has its oxide or coating on it.
Can I paint the metal first and then glue to the paint?
You can, but the bond is only as strong as the paint's grip on the metal, which is normally the weakest link. Bond to bare metal and paint afterwards.
