Which adhesives fill a gap, and which need a tight fit?
Why the fit of the joint chooses the adhesive family, and why using more of a thin glue never bridges a gap.

Short answer
If the parts meet with almost no space between them, use a thin-bond adhesive: PVA, thin superglue, contact adhesive, solvent cement. If there is a visible gap, you need one that cures by chemical reaction through its whole thickness: epoxy, polyurethane, gel superglue, hybrid polymer or grab adhesive. Adding more of a thin adhesive does not fill a gap, it just shrinks in it.

People choose adhesive by material — wood glue for wood, plastic glue for plastic. That is only half the decision, and it is the half that matters less often than the other. The fit of the joint decides which family can work at all, because adhesives differ enormously in whether they retain strength in a thick section, and several of the most useful ones have essentially none.
Step by step
- Dry-assemble the parts and look at the joint from the side.Hold it up to a light. If light comes through, or a piece of paper slides into the joint, you have a gap and the decision is already made. This takes ten seconds and it is the whole diagnosis.
- Understand why thin-bond adhesives fail in a gap.PVA, contact adhesive and solvent cement all reach their final state by losing something — water or solvent — to the air or into a porous material. What leaves is volume, so a thick section shrinks, pulls away from the sides and leaves voids. Thin superglue additionally cures from the outside in and may never harden in the middle.
- Understand why gap-filling adhesives can do it.Epoxy and polyurethane cure by chemical reaction between components or with moisture, adding nothing to the air and losing nothing to it. They set throughout, they retain useful strength in a thick section, and they are dimensionally stable while doing it.
- Prefer closing the gap over filling it.Almost every joint is stronger and more predictable with a good fit and a thin glue line than with a poor fit and a gap-filling adhesive. Pack, shim, re-cut or add a loose spline first if you reasonably can — the adhesive is the last resort, not the first.
- Match the viscosity to the gap you actually have.Thin cyanoacrylate wicks into a hairline by capillary action and is useless anywhere else. Medium fills a small imperfection. Gel stays where you put it and tolerates a real gap. The same logic runs across every family: thinner for tight, thicker for loose.
- Use a filler in the adhesive where the gap is large.Epoxy thickened with the filler powders sold for it, or with fine sawdust of the same timber, holds its shape in a wide gap and stops it running out. Thickened epoxy is the standard answer to a joint that has been damaged rather than merely loose.
- Respect the cure differences that follow.A thick section of epoxy generates real heat and cures faster than a thin one. A thick section of polyurethane foams considerably as it cures. A thick section of moisture-curing adhesive in a sealed joint may take days. Read the thick-section behaviour, not just the quoted set time.
Tips
- The strongest wood joint is a close-fitting one with a thin PVA line, and the joint is then stronger than the timber. No gap-filling adhesive beats that, so fit is worth the effort.
- Gel superglue plus a filler powder such as bicarbonate of soda sets almost instantly into a hard, machinable mass. It is a real technique for rebuilding a small missing corner, and it gets very hot doing it.
- Grab adhesive and hybrid polymers are gap-filling by design, which is why they work on an uneven wall where a thin adhesive would touch in three places.
- If a joint has a gap because a previous repair failed, get all the old adhesive out first. Fresh adhesive over a failed film is bonding to the film.
Common mistakes
- Using more PVA to bridge a loose joint — PVA has very low strength across a gap and shrinks as it loses water. The joint feels solid on the day and lets go later, usually when it is loaded.
- Flooding a loose joint with thin superglue — It runs out, wicks into places you did not want it, and cures only where the film is thin. The middle can stay liquid for weeks.
- Treating a gap-filling adhesive as stronger — It is not stronger, it is more tolerant. In a tight joint most of them are no better than the cheap thin option and considerably more expensive.
Questions people ask
How big a gap counts as a gap?
For practical purposes, anything you can see light through or slide paper into. Thin-bond adhesives want the parts effectively touching; below that threshold the distinction stops mattering.
Can I fill a gap with a wood shim and then use PVA?
Yes, and it is usually the best answer. A tight-fitting sliver of the same timber, glued in and trimmed, restores the fit and lets you use the strongest option. This is what a repairer would do.
Is polyurethane glue gap-filling because it foams?
Only partly. The foam fills space but it has little strength — it is bulk, not structure. Polyurethane tolerates a gap better than PVA, but a foamed-out joint is not a strong joint and should not be treated as one.
