Which adhesive survives outdoors, and will any glue stick to a damp surface?
Water, ultraviolet, freeze-thaw and daily movement each kill different adhesives — which families survive all four, and which stick to a surface that is already wet.

Short answer
Outdoors, use polyurethane, a hybrid MS polymer, or epoxy — those three tolerate water, temperature swing and ultraviolet. Interior PVA and any water-based adhesive will fail. For a surface that is genuinely damp, polyurethane and hybrid polymers are the only common families that will bond, because they cure by reacting with moisture rather than being ruined by it.
Outdoors is four separate attacks, not one. Liquid water gets into the bond line and into porous materials. Ultraviolet breaks polymer chains at the surface. Temperature swings of thirty degrees across a year expand and contract the two materials at different rates, so the joint is constantly worked. And freeze-thaw drives water that has already got in to expand. An adhesive can be excellent at resisting one and useless against another.

Step by step
- Decide whether the joint is exposed, sheltered or immersed.Sheltered outdoor work — inside a porch, under a deep eaves — is a far milder environment than a south-facing fence rail. Anything that stands in water, including the bottom of a post or a bench leg on paving, is the hardest case of all.
- For timber outdoors, use a D4-rated wood glue or polyurethane.Waterproof wood adhesives are classified by water-resistance class, and D3 or D4 is what outdoor work needs. Ordinary interior PVA is D2 or D1 and will creep and release once it has been soaked a few times.
- For mixed materials outdoors, use a hybrid MS polymer.These bond timber to masonry, metal to plastic and almost every other awkward pair, stay flexible enough to absorb the differential movement, tolerate damp and resist ultraviolet. They are the default for a joint between two things that expand at different rates.
- For structural and rigid outdoor bonds, use epoxy.Epoxy is waterproof once cured, strong and gap-filling, and it is the right answer for metal fittings, stone and repairs that must not move. Its weakness is ultraviolet — most epoxies chalk and yellow in direct sun — so keep it covered or paint over it.
- Use polyurethane where the surface is damp.Polyurethane adhesives cure by reacting with moisture, so a lightly damp surface helps rather than hinders. This is the one family that genuinely prefers a slightly wet substrate, and it is why it dominates outdoor timber work.
- Do not confuse damp with wet.Damp means a surface that feels cool and has moisture in the pores. Wet means standing water or a visible film. Nothing bonds through standing water, because the adhesive cannot reach the surface at all. Wipe it and give it whatever drying time the weather allows.
- Check the temperature as well as the moisture.Most adhesives quote their figures at around twenty degrees and slow markedly as it gets colder, with many stopping altogether below about five. A cold, still, damp winter day can turn a two-hour clamp time into two days.
- Protect the joint from ultraviolet if you can.Paint, a cover strip, or simply designing the joint so the glue line faces down. Almost every adhesive lasts substantially longer out of direct sunlight, and the failure is always at the exposed face first.
Tips
- Water-resistant is not waterproof, and neither term is regulated in ordinary retail language. The bond class on a wood adhesive is the meaningful number.
- An outdoor joint that traps water is worse than one that gets wet and drains. Design so water runs off rather than sits, and no adhesive has to work as hard.
- Hybrid polymer adhesives will bond a damp surface but not a dirty one — damp tolerance does not mean contamination tolerance, and a wet surface is usually also a dirty one.
- If a joint must be made in the rain and must hold, the honest answer is often a mechanical fixing now and an adhesive later, rather than an adhesive that will not cure.
Common mistakes
- Using interior PVA on outdoor timber because it is what was in the shed — It survives one summer and then creeps and releases. Cheap interior wood glue is the single most common cause of outdoor joinery falling apart.
- Using epoxy in full sun without covering it — Ultraviolet chalks the surface and it degrades from the exposed face inwards. It is a superb outdoor adhesive as long as it is not looking at the sky.
- Wetting a surface heavily for polyurethane glue — A light mist is what it needs. Standing water makes it foam violently, and the foam has almost no strength, so the joint ends up full of froth instead of adhesive.
Alternatives
- Mechanical fixing with an adhesive as a supplement: Screws, bolts or a resin anchor carry the load and the adhesive seals and stiffens. Outdoors this is almost always the more durable arrangement, and it does not depend on the weather on the day.
- Hybrid polymer as a bonded-and-sealed joint: Because these products are adhesive and sealant at once, a single bead can both hold a component and keep water out of the joint behind it, which two separate products cannot easily do.
- Marine-grade epoxy: Formulated for permanent immersion and for bonding to damp timber after priming with a thinned coat. More expensive and slower, and the right answer where a joint genuinely lives in water.
Questions people ask
Is Gorilla-type glue waterproof?
Polyurethane adhesives are generally rated as waterproof once cured and are widely used outdoors. Check the specific product's bond class rather than the brand, since the same brand sells several different chemistries.
Can I glue something in the rain?
Polyurethane and some hybrid polymers will cure in damp conditions, but no adhesive bonds through running water on the surface. Shelter the joint, wipe the surfaces, and accept a much longer cure time.
Will exterior wood glue work on wet timber?
Poorly. It is water-resistant once cured, which is a different thing from being able to bond a wet surface. Let the timber come back to a reasonable moisture content, or switch to polyurethane.
What about below the waterline or permanently submerged?
That is a marine epoxy job, applied to a properly prepared and often primed surface. General-purpose adhesives are not tested for permanent immersion and should not be relied on for it.
