How do I fix a toilet flush handle that has gone floppy?
The three things that make a lever go slack — a loose backnut, a broken lever arm and a detached link — and which of them is worth repairing.

Short answer
Take the lid off and look at the inside end of the lever. A handle that turns without lifting anything has either come adrift from its link, or the plastic lever arm has snapped. A handle that flops loosely in the hole has a slack backnut inside the cistern, which is a left-hand thread on most toilets.
A flush handle is a lever passing through a hole in the cistern, held by a backnut, with an arm on the inside that lifts the flush valve or the syphon rod. All three parts fail in a different way and produce slightly different symptoms, and telling them apart takes one look with the lid off. The one genuine trap is that the backnut is usually a left-hand thread, so tightening it the way instinct says loosens it.

Step by step
- Take the lid off and operate the handle while watching.This tells you which of the three faults you have. The handle turning freely with the arm inside not moving means the arm has broken or come off the spindle. The arm moving but nothing lifting means the link between arm and valve has come adrift. The whole handle wobbling in its hole means the backnut is loose.
- Tighten a loose backnut — remembering the thread.The backnut inside the cistern, on the lever's spindle, is a left-hand thread on the large majority of toilets. It tightens anticlockwise as you look at it from inside. Nip it up with pliers, holding the handle straight outside. Do not over-tighten — the cistern wall is china.
- Reconnect a detached link.On a flush valve, the arm connects by a plastic link, a clip or a short chain to the valve's lift point. On a syphon, a wire link goes from the arm to the syphon rod. These pop off. Reconnect it, and check the length: it needs enough slack that the valve or syphon closes fully at rest, and not so much that a full pull does not lift it fully.
- Replace a broken lever arm.Plastic lever arms snap where the spindle meets the arm, and they cannot be usefully repaired. Levers are a cheap universal part sold by handle style. Undo the backnut, withdraw the old lever, fit the new one with its washer, and do the backnut up anticlockwise.
- Match the hand of the replacement.Levers are made for front-fitting, left-side and right-side cisterns, and the arm is angled accordingly. Take the old one with you or measure the arm before buying, particularly for a side-lever cistern.
- Set the linkage length properly.Too short and the flush does not lift fully, so the toilet flushes weakly. Too long and the valve is held slightly open, so the cistern runs constantly into the pan. There should be a small amount of free movement at the handle before the valve starts to lift.
- Test through several flushes.Operate it a dozen times and watch that the valve or syphon returns fully closed each time. A linkage that catches occasionally is the cause of a toilet that runs 'sometimes', which is otherwise a maddening fault to diagnose.
If it doesn't work
The handle turns all the way with no resistance
Cause: Broken lever arm or a spindle that has stripped — Fix: Replace the lever. They are cheap, universal by style, and take ten minutes.
The handle is stiff and heavy to push
Cause: Corroded metal lever, or the link binding on the cistern wall — Fix: Free and lubricate a metal lever, or replace it with a plastic one. Check the link is not fouling anything on its travel.
The handle works but the toilet runs afterwards
Cause: Link too short, holding the valve or syphon slightly open — Fix: Lengthen the link or reposition it so the valve seats fully with the handle at rest.
The backnut keeps loosening
Cause: Being tightened the wrong way, or the washer is missing — Fix: Remember it is a left-hand thread on most toilets. Check the washer between the lever and the cistern wall is present and in good condition.
The handle came off in someone's hand and the spindle is still in the cistern
Cause: The handle has sheared from the spindle — Fix: Replace the whole lever assembly rather than trying to bond the handle back.
