Why is my exhaust blowing, and will it fail the MOT?

Short answer

A blowing exhaust is a leak letting gas escape before the end of the system, and the noise is loudest when you accelerate because that is when the pressure is highest. Most leaks are at a joint, a corroded section, or a failed flexible pipe near the engine. It is an MOT defect if the system is leaking, insecure, incomplete or no longer effectively silencing the engine — and a leak ahead of the cabin is a safety matter as well as a noise one.

The exhaust system does three jobs at once: it carries gas away from the engine and out behind the car, it holds the emissions control equipment, and it silences the noise. A leak compromises all three, which is why a blowing exhaust is not simply a loud car. What makes it worth understanding rather than ignoring is that the location of the leak changes how serious it is — a rusted-through back box is an annoyance, and a split flexible joint under the bulkhead is not.

A leak in the exhaust system ahead of the cabin can let exhaust gas, including carbon monoxide, into the car. Carbon monoxide has no smell and causes headache, drowsiness and confusion before anything more serious. If you notice a smell of exhaust inside the car, or feel drowsy or headachy while driving, open the windows fully, stop somewhere safe and get fresh air, and have the vehicle checked before using it again.

Step by step

  1. Listen to when the noise appears.A blowing exhaust is loudest under acceleration and quieter when you lift off, because exhaust pressure follows engine load. A noise that is constant regardless of load, or that only happens on the overrun, is usually something else. A rasp that changes as the engine warms and the metal expands is a very characteristic small leak.
  2. Work out roughly where it is coming from.Front of the car and up near the bulkhead usually means the manifold, its gasket, or the flexible section. Under the middle means a joint or a corroded pipe. At the rear means the silencer or its joint. From the driver's seat, front leaks sound sharper and closer and are far more likely to put gas near the cabin.
  3. Treat any exhaust smell inside the car as urgent.Exhaust gas entering the cabin is a carbon monoxide risk, and carbon monoxide is odourless — you smell the other components, not the dangerous one. Open the windows, stop, and have it checked. This is the one exhaust symptom that should not wait for a convenient appointment.
  4. Understand the flexible section, because it fails often.Many cars have a braided flexible joint just behind the manifold, allowing the engine to move on its mounts without cracking the pipe. It has a hard life and it corrodes and splits. It is a common cause of a loud front-end blow, and it is right where a leak matters most.
  5. Know why corrosion concentrates where it does.Exhaust gas contains water, and a system that never gets hot enough to dry out internally rusts from the inside. Cars used only for short journeys corrode their exhausts far faster than cars that do longer runs, and the silencers go first because they are where the condensate collects.
  6. Check the mountings before assuming the worst.A perished rubber mounting lets the system hang low and knock against the underbody, which sounds alarming and is cheap to fix. It can also strain a joint until it leaks. Rubber mountings are one of the very few exhaust items that are genuinely inspectable from a crouch with the car cold.
  7. Know where the MOT line sits.The exhaust is assessed for security, completeness, leaks and effective silencing. A system that is leaking, insecure, missing a component or no longer reducing noise effectively is a defect. Emissions control equipment being missing or obviously tampered with is a separate and more serious matter — a diesel presented with the particulate filter removed fails.
  8. Be realistic about repair versus replacement.A joint can often be resealed and a clamp replaced. A corroded section is normally replaced as a section, and on many modern cars the sections are larger than they used to be, which raises the cost. Welded patch repairs on badly corroded pipe rarely last, because the metal around the repair is already thin.
  9. Take the catalytic converter or particulate filter into account.On many cars the emissions equipment is integrated into a section of the exhaust, so a leak near it can turn into a much bigger bill. Get the quote broken down by section before agreeing to anything, and ask specifically what is being replaced.
  10. Do not put up with it for long.A small leak becomes a large one as the escaping gas erodes the metal around it, and an unsupported system strains its joints and mountings. Beyond the noise and the MOT, a blowing exhaust can affect how the engine's oxygen sensors read the mixture, which can cause running problems and a warning light.

Tips

  • Have someone start the car from cold while you listen from a few metres behind and then a few metres to the side. Small leaks are much easier to place before the system heats up and the metal expands to close the gap.
  • If the noise appeared suddenly after driving over something, look for a physical knock — a crushed pipe or a dislodged heat shield. A loose heat shield rattles rather than blows and is often mistaken for something expensive.
  • A car used only for very short journeys will keep eating exhausts. Building in one longer run a week does more for the exhaust, the particulate filter and the battery than anything you can buy.

  • Ignoring an exhaust smell inside the cabin — Carbon monoxide is odourless and causes headache, drowsiness and confusion. Any smell of exhaust inside a moving car needs ventilation and immediate investigation.
  • Assuming a loud car is just a rear silencer — Front leaks at the manifold or the flexible joint sound similar from the driver's seat and are considerably more serious. Where the leak is matters more than how loud it is.
  • Patching heavily corroded pipe — The surrounding metal is already thin, so the repair simply moves the leak a few inches along. On a badly corroded section, replacement is the honest answer.

If it doesn't work

Loud rasp on acceleration, quieter when you lift off

Cause: A leak somewhere in the system, ahead of the point where the gas escapes — Fix: Have it located on a ramp. The noise pattern confirms a leak but not where it is, and location determines both cost and urgency.

Noise loudest at the front, and a smell inside the car

Cause: Manifold gasket or flexible joint leaking near the bulkhead — Fix: Treat as urgent. Ventilate the cabin and have it inspected before further use — this is the configuration that puts exhaust gas where people breathe.

Rattle rather than a blow, worse over bumps

Cause: A loose heat shield or a perished mounting — Fix: Usually cheap. Both are visible from underneath and neither is a leak, so do not accept a quote for a full system without seeing the reason.

Engine light on as well as the noise

Cause: A leak upstream of an oxygen sensor confusing the mixture reading — Fix: Fix the leak first, then clear and recheck the code. Replacing a sensor while the leak remains rarely helps.

Failed the MOT on emissions as well as the exhaust

Cause: A leak affecting the reading, or genuinely raised emissions — Fix: Have the leak repaired and the test repeated before assuming an expensive emissions fault. A leaking system can distort the result.

Is it illegal to drive with a blowing exhaust?

A vehicle must have an exhaust system that is secure, complete and effective at silencing the engine. A leaking or insecure system is an MOT defect and driving with one can also be an offence in terms of noise and vehicle condition. A leak that puts exhaust gas near the cabin is a safety matter as well.

Will a blowing exhaust fail the MOT?

If the system is leaking, insecure, incomplete or no longer silencing the engine effectively, yes. Missing or tampered emissions equipment is a separate and more serious matter — a diesel presented without its particulate filter fails.

Why do exhausts rust from the inside?

Because exhaust gas contains water, which condenses inside a system that does not get hot enough to dry out. Short journeys are what cause it, which is why a low-mileage car used for school runs can go through exhausts faster than a high-mileage motorway car.

Can I use exhaust paste or bandage as a repair?

As a temporary measure to get to a garage, on a small joint leak, sometimes. It is not a repair and it will not satisfy an MOT tester on a corroded section. Anything ahead of the cabin should be repaired properly rather than patched.
