How do I drive an automatic if I have only ever driven a manual?

What P, R, N and D actually do, why creep is a feature rather than a fault, and the three manual habits that cause trouble in the first week.

Short answer

Left foot stays on the floor — use the right foot for both pedals, every time. Keep your foot on the brake whenever you change between P, R, N and D, and expect the car to creep forward on its own the moment you release the brake in D. Everything else is easier than a manual, not harder.

Automatics have gone from a minority choice to the majority of new cars in Britain, partly because every electric and hybrid car is effectively one. That means a lot of people who learned in a manual twenty years ago are now driving an automatic for the first time, usually in a hire car or a courtesy car, with no introduction. It is genuinely simpler, and the small number of things that catch people out are the same three every time: the left foot, creep, and what to do on a hill.

The single dangerous habit carried over from a manual is using the left foot on the brake as though it were a clutch. In an emergency the left foot presses hard and instinctively, and doing that on a brake pedal while the right foot is on the accelerator produces a car that is braking and accelerating at once. Drive an automatic with the right foot only until it is genuinely second nature.

Step by step

  1. Put the left foot flat on the floor and leave it there.Most automatics have a footrest to the left of the brake for exactly this reason. Using the right foot for both pedals means you can never press both at once, and it makes the emergency reaction correct rather than dangerous.
  2. Learn what each position does.P is park, which mechanically locks the transmission and is for when the car is stopped and you are leaving it. R is reverse. N is neutral, which disconnects drive without locking anything. D is drive, which handles all the forward gears itself. Some cars add S or a manual mode for holding lower gears.
  3. Always have your foot on the brake when changing between them.Most cars will not let you leave P without the brake pressed, which is a safety interlock rather than a fault. Getting into the habit means you never select D or R with the car free to move.
  4. Expect creep, and use it.In D with the brake released, a conventional automatic moves forward on its own at walking pace. This is normal and it is the single most useful feature for parking and slow manoeuvring — you control speed entirely with the brake and never touch the accelerator.
  5. Handle hills with the brake, not the accelerator.Creep will hold many cars on a gentle slope, but on anything steeper the car will roll back. Use the footbrake, or the electronic hold function if the car has one, and move your foot straight from brake to accelerator. Do not hold the car with the accelerator against the brake, which cooks the transmission fluid.
  6. Use P only when stopped, and apply the handbrake too.Selecting P while still rolling can damage the parking pawl. Stop fully, apply the handbrake, then select P. On a slope the handbrake should take the load rather than the pawl, which is why the order matters.
  7. Do not use N at traffic lights.There is no benefit — the transmission is already decoupled when you are stationary in D with the brake on — and it adds two unnecessary selector movements at a moment when your attention is elsewhere.
  8. Understand what the paddles or manual mode are for.Holding a lower gear on a long descent lets the engine do the braking, which is genuinely useful and saves the brakes. It is not for pretending to drive a manual around town, where the automatic will make better decisions than you will.

Common mistakes

  • Using the left foot on the brake — In a genuine emergency the left foot stamps. On a brake pedal, with the right foot still on the accelerator, that produces a car doing both at once and stopping much later than it should.
  • Selecting P to hold the car at a junction — P is a parking lock, not a brake. Repeatedly engaging it while the car may still be creeping wears the parking pawl, and it delays you when you need to move.

If it doesn't work

Car lurches when selecting D or R

Cause: Selecting while revs are up, or a transmission mount — Fix: Let the engine settle to idle with your foot firmly on the brake before selecting. A persistent hard clunk is worth having checked.

Rolls back noticeably on hills

Cause: Creep is not enough on that gradient — Fix: Use the footbrake and move straight to the accelerator, or engage the hill-hold function if the car has one. This is normal behaviour, not a fault.

Will not come out of P

Cause: Brake not pressed, or a shift interlock fault — Fix: Press the brake firmly. If it still will not move, most cars have a manual shift-lock release described in the handbook, often a small covered slot beside the selector.

Gearchanges feel harsh or hesitant

Cause: Adaptive transmission relearning, or overdue fluid — Fix: Many automatics adapt to driving style and behave oddly for a few dozen miles after a battery disconnection. If it persists, transmission fluid has a service interval on most cars despite the myth that it is sealed for life.

Dual-clutch car judders at low speed

Cause: Normal characteristic of a dual-clutch gearbox in stop-start traffic — Fix: It is not a conventional automatic and it behaves differently at crawling speed. Smooth, decisive pedal inputs help; hovering between creep and stop does not.

Questions people ask

Can I drive an automatic on a manual licence?

Yes. A full manual category B licence covers automatics. It does not work the other way round — a licence obtained in an automatic is restricted to automatics.

Do automatics use more fuel?

They used to. Modern automatics with many ratios and a locking torque converter often match or beat the equivalent manual on the official figures, and dual-clutch gearboxes generally do. It is no longer a reason to avoid one.

What is the difference between a torque converter, a CVT and a dual-clutch?

A torque converter automatic uses a fluid coupling and feels smooth and slightly soft. A CVT has no fixed ratios and holds revs steady while speed builds, which sounds odd but is efficient. A dual-clutch is essentially an automated manual with two clutches — very quick, and the one most likely to feel awkward at crawling speed.
