How do I reverse into a parking bay properly?

Why reversing in is easier and safer than driving in, the reference points that make it repeatable, and how to fix it when you end up crooked.

Short answer

Pull past the bay so your rear wheels are roughly level with the line of the bay you want, then reverse slowly with full lock towards it and straighten as the car comes into line. The car pivots around its rear wheels, which is why reversing in is a single controlled arc while driving in forwards leaves you fighting the front. Go slowly enough that you can stop at any moment.

There is a reason driving instructors, delivery drivers and anyone who parks for a living reverses into bays. A car steers with its front wheels and pivots around its rear ones, so reversing puts the steered end where the space is opening up and the pivot where you want it. Driving in forwards does the opposite: the back of the car swings wide exactly when you have no room, which is why people end up straddling a line and shuffling. It is also safer to leave, because you drive out forwards into a space you can see rather than reversing blind into a moving car park.

Reversing collisions are among the most common in car parks, and the ones that injure people usually involve a child or a wheelchair user below the line of the rear window. Look over both shoulders and check behind the car physically before you start, and treat a reversing camera as an aid rather than as the check itself — cameras have blind spots close to the bumper.
Why reversing into a bay is one arc and driving in is a fight

Step by step

  1. Choose a bay you can approach with room.One with an empty bay beside it, or on the end of a row, is far easier. Practising into the tightest space in the car park is how people convince themselves they cannot do it.
  2. Signal, then pull past the bay.Drive forwards past your chosen bay, staying reasonably close to the row, until your rear wheels are roughly level with the near line of the bay. On most cars that is when the bay line appears in the door mirror at about the level of the door handle, which is worth noting for your own car.
  3. Check all round before you move.Both mirrors, over both shoulders, and a genuine look at the space behind. This is the moment when someone walks behind you, and it is not covered by a glance at the camera screen.
  4. Reverse slowly with full lock towards the bay.Slow enough to stop instantly. The car swings its nose out and its tail into the bay. Keep looking mostly out of the rear window and over your shoulder, using the mirrors to check clearance either side.
  5. Use the mirror to watch the bay line.The reference that makes this repeatable is the line of the bay in the door mirror. As the car swings in, the line should run roughly parallel with the side of your car. If it is converging, you need more lock; if diverging, less.
  6. Straighten as the car comes into line.Wind the lock off progressively as the car aligns with the bay, so you finish straight rather than having to shuffle. Continue back until you are far enough in, checking the mirrors for the kerb or the car behind.
  7. Stop and reset if it is going wrong.Pull forward and start again rather than trying to correct a bad angle in one go. It takes ten seconds and produces a better result than three attempts at correcting.
  8. Check your final position before switching off.Both mirrors should show a similar gap. If the doors will not open properly or you are over a line, reposition — it takes moments and prevents a dented door.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing it because people are waiting — Almost every car park scrape happens in the extra second someone did not take. A driver waiting for ten seconds is not a problem; a repair bill is.
  • Trusting the camera instead of looking — Cameras have a blind area immediately behind the bumper, which is exactly where a small child would be. The physical look before moving is the check that matters.

If it doesn't work

Always end up crooked in the bay

Cause: Starting the turn too early or too late — Fix: The start position is the whole thing. If you consistently end up too close to one side, adjust where you stop before beginning the reverse rather than trying to fix it mid-manoeuvre.

Front of the car swings into the parked car opposite

Cause: Not enough room in the aisle for the swing — Fix: Pull further past the bay before starting, which reduces the angle you need. In a narrow aisle, reversing in may take two bites, and that is normal.

Cannot see out of the rear window at all

Cause: Loaded car, high boot line, or a small rear screen — Fix: Use the door mirrors and the camera together, and get out and look if you are unsure. Modern cars have genuinely poor rear visibility and there is no shame in checking.

Reversing camera makes it harder, not easier

Cause: Wide-angle distortion and no depth cues — Fix: Use it for the last stretch and for spotting obstacles, not for the geometry. The mirrors and the rear window are what tell you about angle.

Sensors beeping constantly in a tight space

Cause: Objects within range on multiple sides — Fix: Do not rely on the tone alone. Sensors miss low kerbs, bollards below the beam and narrow posts, which are the three things most commonly hit.

Questions people ask

Is reversing into a bay actually safer?

Yes, and it is why fleet operators require it. You reverse into a static, empty space that you have just looked at, and you drive out forwards into a moving car park with a full view. The reverse happens at the point of lowest risk.

What about parking on a driveway?

The same argument applies with more force, because you would otherwise be reversing out onto a road. Reversing onto a driveway means leaving in forward gear with a clear view of the pavement and traffic.

How do I judge how far back to go?

Use the mirrors to watch the kerb or the line at the back of the bay, and use the parking sensors if you have them. A useful trick is to note where the kerb appears in the door mirror when you are correctly positioned, and use that as your reference every time.
