Treat the stated weight as a laboratory maximum on a perfectly flat, clean, non-porous surface with the load pulling straight down the wall. A projecting item loads the pad in cleavage instead, which is several times weaker, and a textured, dusty or chalky-painted wall reduces the real contact area to a fraction of the pad. In practice, allow a large margin and never use it for anything whose fall would matter.

Foam mounting tape is genuinely strong and it fails constantly, and the gap between those two statements is entirely about how the load reaches it. Manufacturers quote shear strength because it is the mode the material is best at, and it is the mode almost nothing in a house is actually loaded in.

Never tape-mount anything above a bed, a cot, a bath, a stairwell or a walkway, and never anything that would injure someone or break something valuable if it fell. Adhesive mounting has no inspectable strength and no warning before it releases, and the failure is usually sudden and complete. Anything heavy, projecting or overhead needs a mechanical fixing.
How a mounting pad is loaded, and why the rating is usually wrong

Step by step

  1. Understand what the rating means.It is normally a shear figure โ€” the load pulling straight down parallel to the wall โ€” measured on a smooth, clean, rigid, non-porous test surface at room temperature after a full cure. Every one of those conditions is better than what you have.
  2. Work out how your item is actually loaded.Flat against the wall is shear, and the rating roughly applies. Projecting from the wall โ€” a hook, a shelf, a bracket, anything with something hanging on it โ€” turns the weight into a turning moment that pulls the top edge of the pad straight off the wall. That is cleavage, and it is several times weaker.
  3. Understand that peel is weaker still.A lifted corner, a knock from below, or a flexible item being pulled back all concentrate the entire load on a line a fraction of a millimetre wide. This is why a pad rated in kilogrammes can be lifted off with a fingernail.
  4. Assess the surface honestly.The rating assumes full contact. Textured wallpaper, a heavily rolled emulsion finish, a dusty wall or a bathroom tile with a residue film all reduce the real contact to a fraction of the pad's area, and the rating drops in proportion.
  5. Check what the surface itself can hold.On old emulsion, distemper or chalky paint, the adhesive holds perfectly and the paint lets go. This is the most common failure of a correctly chosen pad, and the tape comes off the wall with a neat disc of paint on it.
  6. Clean both surfaces with alcohol and press hard.Isopropyl alcohol on both faces, let it flash off, then press for a good thirty seconds over the whole pad. Pressure is what makes the adhesive flow into the surface, and it is the step people skip.
  7. Let it build strength before loading.Most mounting tapes reach only part of their strength immediately and full strength after a day or more. Hanging something on it straight away is a common cause of a slow failure over the following week.
  8. Do not use it in the cold, or where it gets hot.Below about ten degrees the adhesive will not flow into the surface, so a pad applied in a cold room is permanently weak. In a conservatory, a car or direct sun it softens and creeps.
  9. Use several small pads spread out rather than one big one.For a flat item, pads at the corners resist twisting and cleavage far better than the same area concentrated in the middle. Put pads where the load will try to lift the item, which is usually the top edge.

Tips

  • The removable command-style strips are a different product and their rating assumes a specific pull-tab removal. Follow the fitting instructions exactly; they are unusually specific for a reason.
  • On a painted wall, test the paint first: press a strip of tape onto an inconspicuous area, leave it a day and pull it off. If paint comes with it, the wall is the limiting factor.
  • A pad plus a small mechanical support underneath โ€” a batten, a screw, a hook โ€” carries the weight while the tape stops movement. This is how mirror systems are designed and it is the reliable arrangement.
  • Removal is easier if you cut through the foam with dental floss or fishing line rather than prising the item off, then roll the residue off with a thumb.
  • Bathrooms defeat mounting tape faster than anywhere else: humidity, temperature swing and a film of soap and product residue on every surface.

  • Using the pack rating for a projecting item โ€” The rating is for shear. A shelf or a hook loads the pad in cleavage, which is several times weaker, and the whole load concentrates on the top edge of the pad.
  • Applying to a textured or dusty surface โ€” The real contact area is a fraction of the pad. The rating scales with contact area, so the actual capacity is a fraction of the number too.
  • Loading it immediately โ€” Most mounting adhesives need a day to reach full strength. Loading straight away often shows as a slow creep and a failure a week later.
  • Mounting anything over a bed or a bath โ€” There is no safe failure mode and no warning. Those locations need a mechanical fixing regardless of the weight.
