What is construction adhesive, and when do I need it rather than grab adhesive?
Two cartridge products that look identical on the shelf: one is chosen for instant hold, the other for final strength, and they are not interchangeable.

Short answer
Grab adhesive is chosen for high initial tack — it holds a piece in place without support while it cures. Construction adhesive is chosen for final strength and durability, particularly on structural timber, and it usually needs to be held or fixed while it cures. If you need the piece to stay put on its own, that is grab; if you need the joint to be strong in a year, that is construction.
The words are used loosely and the packaging does not help, but there is a real distinction underneath. Both are gun-applied, both are gap-filling, and both are sold as sticking anything to anything. What differs is which property was optimised. Instant grab and long-term strength pull against one another chemically, and a product cannot maximise both.

Step by step
- Work out whether the piece has to hold itself immediately.Coving, a panel on a wall, a trim at head height with no way to prop it — those need grab. If you can screw, clamp, prop or nail it while it cures, you are free to choose on strength instead.
- Work out what the joint has to survive.A decorative trim in a hallway asks very little. A subfloor panel walked on daily, a stair tread, a bonded timber joint outdoors or something that gets wet asks a great deal, and that is construction adhesive territory.
- Choose the chemistry deliberately.Solvent-based grabs harder and faster and works in damp conditions but smells strongly and is flammable. Water-based is low odour and paintable but needs at least one porous surface to cure and is not for wet areas. Polyurethane and hybrid polymer construction adhesives cure by chemical reaction, work on non-porous surfaces and are the strongest and most durable.
- Check whether either surface is porous.This is the question that catches people out. A water-based or solvent-based product between two non-porous surfaces — tile to metal, plastic to glass — has nowhere for the water or solvent to go and stays soft in the middle indefinitely.
- Apply in beads or spots, not a solid bed.Vertical zigzags or spots about the size of a ten pence piece. This lets air reach the adhesive, gives it somewhere to spread when compressed, and stops the piece being held off the wall on a thick pad of adhesive.
- Press on, pull off, and press back for a stronger hold.With most of these, offering the piece up, pulling it away for a minute and then pressing it back roughly doubles the initial hold, because the surfaces of the beads skin slightly and grip harder. It is on the instructions of many products and almost nobody reads it.
- Support it for the full cure, not the grab time.Grab holds the piece; it does not carry a load. Full cure is usually a day or two and considerably longer in a thick section or in the cold. Do not hang, load or lever anything until then.
- Accept that removal will damage the substrate.Both products bond harder than plasterboard paper, plaster skim or old paint. Whatever comes off later brings the wall surface with it, so do not use either for anything you may want to change.
Tips
- Hybrid polymer construction adhesives are the best general answer where you cannot easily categorise the job: they cure with moisture, work on non-porous surfaces, tolerate damp, stay slightly flexible and are usually paintable.
- On a dusty or chalky wall, neither product will hold, however good it is. Seal the surface first — the adhesive is not the failing component.
- Solvent-based grab is the traditional answer for coving on a slightly damp new plaster wall, precisely because it does not need the wall to absorb water.
- For a heavy item on a wall, the correct arrangement is nearly always a mechanical fixing carrying the weight with the adhesive stiffening and sealing, not adhesive alone.
- A cartridge that has been in a cold van is very hard to gun and extrudes unevenly. Bring it indoors for a few hours first.
Common mistakes
- Using grab adhesive as a structural fixing — It is designed for the first ten minutes, not the next ten years. Its cured strength is real but modest, and there is no way to inspect it.
- Buttering the whole back of a panel — Air cannot reach the middle of a water- or solvent-based bed, so it stays soft, and the panel is also held proud on a thick uneven layer.
- Using it on a painted or papered wall without checking — The adhesive holds and the paint or paper releases. Almost every failure of a correctly chosen product is this.
- Loading it as soon as it feels solid — Initial grab is not strength. The gap between the two is where most disappointments live.
Alternatives
- Mechanical fixing with adhesive as a supplement: Screws or plugs take the load and the adhesive fills the gaps, stops rattling and seals. For anything heavy or overhead this is the correct arrangement rather than a compromise.
- Hybrid polymer adhesive-sealant: One product that bonds and seals, works on non-porous surfaces and stays flexible. More expensive per cartridge and usually the best value once you count the jobs it covers.
- Double-sided mounting tape plus adhesive: The tape holds the piece instantly and accurately while the adhesive cures underneath. This is how mirror and panel systems are designed to work.
Questions people ask
Is 'no nails' the same as construction adhesive?
It is a marketing name used across several different chemistries. Read what the tube actually says about surfaces, water resistance and cure — the name tells you nothing reliable.
Can I use grab adhesive on a ceiling?
For lightweight decorative items with mechanical support while it cures, yes. For anything with real weight, no — an adhesive-only overhead fixing has no safe failure mode.
Which one do I use for skirting and architrave?
Grab adhesive is the usual choice because it holds while you move on, and it is normally combined with a few pins into the studs or the plaster. Adhesive alone on a slightly bowed wall will let go at the high spots.
Will it stick to a painted wall?
It will stick to the paint. Whether that holds depends entirely on the paint's grip on the wall, which on old emulsion or a chalky surface is very little. Scrape back to sound material where the adhesive goes.
