Short answer
Find out what the wall is made of first — that decides the fixing, and the fixing decides the load. Into studs or masonry wherever possible. Space brackets no more than 600mm apart, closer for heavy loads, and never rely on plasterboard alone for books.
Shelves fail at the wall, not in the middle. Almost every collapsed shelf is the right shelf with the wrong fixing in the wrong wall.

Step by step
- Identify the wall first.Knock it. A solid dull sound is masonry; a hollow sound with studs behind is plasterboard. Dot-and-dab is plasterboard on a masonry wall with a shallow void, and it behaves differently from both.
- Check for cables and pipes.Detector across the whole area, not just where you intend to drill. Cables run vertically and horizontally from every socket and switch, and pipes run from radiators and bathrooms.
- Find the studs on a hollow wall.Usually at 400 or 600mm centres. A fixing into timber carries several times what any plasterboard fixing will. Mark them and design the shelf around them rather than the other way round.
- Match the fixing to the wall.Masonry takes a plug and screw sized to the drill bit. Plasterboard needs a hollow-wall fixing rated for the load. Aerated block needs its own fixings — ordinary plugs spin uselessly in it.
- Be realistic about plasterboard.A metal toggle carries perhaps 20 to 30kg on a straight downward pull, and much less on a shelf that levers outwards. A metre of books is around 20 to 30kg. That arithmetic is why book shelves come down.
- Use a batten for heavy loads on a hollow wall.A timber batten screwed into two or more studs, then the brackets fixed to the batten. That is the correct answer for anything genuinely heavy, and it spreads the load across the structure.
- Space brackets properly.600mm apart maximum for general use, 400 to 450mm for books or anything dense. Add a bracket rather than a thicker shelf — sagging is almost always a spacing problem.
- Support the ends.Brackets no more than about 100mm from each end, or the shelf droops at the tips under load.
- Choose the shelf material for the span.Solid timber and thick plywood carry far more than melamine-faced chipboard, which sags permanently and does not recover. For books, use timber.
- Drill accurately and to depth.The bit size the fixing specifies, straight in, and deep enough for the whole plug. Tape on the bit as a depth marker. An oversized or shallow hole halves the strength.
- Level the first bracket, then measure the second.Fix one, level across to the second position, mark, then fix. Trying to hold both level at once is how shelves end up sloping.
- Load it gradually and check.Put weight on progressively rather than filling it in one go, and look at the wall around the fixings. Any movement or cracking means stop and reassess.
- Think about what is below it.Never above a bed, a cot or where someone sits. If a heavy shelf did fail, what is underneath decides whether it is an inconvenience or an injury.
Tips
- Find the studs and design around them. A screw into timber beats every plasterboard fixing made.
- Brackets at 400 to 450mm for books. Sagging is a spacing problem far more often than a shelf problem.
- Melamine chipboard sags permanently under books and never recovers. Use timber or thick ply.
Common mistakes
- Putting books on a plasterboard-fixed shelf — A metre of books is 20 to 30kg pulling outwards, which is at or beyond what hollow fixings manage on a straight pull. Fix into studs or a batten instead.
- Drilling an oversized hole — The plug spins instead of gripping, and the fixing never reaches its rated load. Use exactly the bit size the fixing specifies.
If it doesn't work
Shelf sagging in the middle
Cause: Brackets too far apart, or the wrong shelf material — Fix: Add a bracket, or replace chipboard with solid timber or thick plywood.
Fixing pulled out of the wall
Cause: Wrong fixing for the wall, or load beyond its rating — Fix: Fit a timber batten across studs and mount the brackets on that.
Plug spinning in the hole
Cause: Hole too large, or aerated block — Fix: Move along and redrill at the correct size, using fixings made for aerated block if that is what it is.
Shelf not level despite careful marking
Cause: Both brackets positioned before either was fixed — Fix: Fix one bracket, level across to the second, then mark and fix.
Cracking around the fixings
Cause: Overloaded plasterboard — Fix: Take the load off immediately and refit into studs or a batten.
