Do sand, gypsum and clay breakers actually improve clay soil?

Four popular clay treatments assessed honestly: what each one physically does, the one situation where gypsum is genuinely right, and why sand is worse than doing nothing.

Short answer

Organic matter works and everything else is marginal. Sand added in garden-scale quantities makes clay harder, not softer — you need over half the volume as coarse sand before it helps, which nobody does. Gypsum only helps sodium-affected clay, which is rare in the UK. Sharp grit helps locally in planting holes and in pots. Frost helps for one season and no longer.

Clay is not a defect. It holds water and nutrients better than any other soil fraction and it grows superb plants once its structure is open. What people are actually trying to fix is the structure — the way the plate-like particles pack tightly together — and structure is built by organic matter, roots and worms, which is why the shortcuts keep disappointing.

Step by step

  1. Understand what makes clay behave as it does.Clay particles are under 0.002mm and plate-shaped, with an electrical charge that holds water films between them. They pack face to face, leaving almost no large pores for air or drainage. Nothing you add changes the particles; you can only change how they are arranged into crumbs.
  2. Assess sand honestly.To convert a clay to a sandy loam by dilution you need coarse sand to make up more than half the total volume — several tonnes on a single bed. Below that, the sand grains sit in a clay matrix and the mixture packs even more tightly. This is the origin of the concrete comparison, and it is fair.
  3. Assess gypsum honestly.Calcium sulphate works by displacing sodium from clay particles, allowing them to flocculate into crumbs. It transforms sodic clays, which occur in arid regions and in coastal soils affected by seawater flooding. Ordinary British garden clay is calcium-dominated already, and gypsum does very little. It is not harmful, and it does not raise pH, but it is money for almost nothing.
  4. Assess proprietary clay breakers.Most are gypsum, sometimes with a wetting agent or an organic component. Judged by the label they promise structural change; judged by what is in the bag, expect the gypsum answer above. The organic ones are simply an expensive way to buy a small quantity of organic matter.
  5. Assess sharp grit.Genuinely useful in small volumes for specific jobs — mixed into a planting hole for a plant that needs sharp drainage, added to a potting mix, or worked into the top 100mm of a bed for alpines. Useless as a whole-bed treatment for the same volume reason as sand.
  6. Assess frost.Freezing water expands and does crack clay clods apart, which is the reason for rough autumn digging on heavy ground. The effect is real but shallow and short-lived: the first heavy rain slumps it back. It buys you a workable spring seedbed, not a structural change.
  7. Assess lime.Calcium does encourage clay particles to flocculate, and on genuinely acid clay a needed liming improves workability as a side effect. But liming soil that is not acid to improve its structure trades a workability gain for locked-up iron and manganese, and that is a bad trade.
  8. Do the thing that works.Fifty millimetres of compost or well-rotted manure spread on the surface every year, never walking on the soil, and keeping it planted or covered. Worms take the material down, roots and fungal threads bind particles into crumbs, and the crumbs are what give clay air and drainage. It takes three to five years and it does not reverse.

Tips

  • Green manures are underrated on clay. Overwintered rye and vetch put a dense root mass through the top 200mm and leave the structure noticeably better the following spring.
  • Raised beds on top of clay give you a workable depth immediately while the clay below improves slowly underneath. On a vegetable plot this is often the pragmatic answer.
  • A planting hole of compost in solid clay becomes a sump that fills with water. Improve a wide area, or plant into the clay itself with only a light amendment, and mulch on top.
  • Clay's advantages are real: it holds far more water through a dry summer than sand, and it holds nutrients rather than letting them wash through. A well-structured clay loam is the best soil in the country.

Alternatives

  • Annual compost mulch: The one treatment with a large, permanent effect. Cheap if you make it, and it improves clay, sand and everything between.
  • Well-rotted manure: Bulkier and higher in nitrogen than garden compost, so it does more per barrow-load on a hungry vegetable plot. Check its herbicide history before you spread it.
  • Composted bark: Slower to break down than compost, so it holds structure open for longer. Good as a surface mulch on clay borders where you do not want a fertility boost.
  • Deep-rooted green manures: Fodder radish and rye send roots through the clay and rot in place. Free structural work over a winter when nothing else is happening.

Questions people ask

So gypsum is a con?

Not a con — a product designed for a soil problem that most UK gardens do not have. It genuinely fixes sodic clay. On calcium-rich British clay it is close to inert, and the money is better spent on compost.

What about adding lots of sand over many years?

You would eventually change the texture, but the quantities are enormous and the intermediate years are worse than the starting point. Nobody has done this successfully in a garden and there is no reason to be first.

Is there anything that improves clay quickly?

A raised bed, because it does not improve the clay at all — it gives you a different soil to grow in while the clay below improves slowly. Everything that genuinely changes clay works on a timescale of years.
