Can I compost diseased plants, or does it spread the problem?

Which plant diseases a home compost heap destroys, which ones it happily preserves for next year, and where the rest should go.

Short answer

A home heap rarely gets hot enough or stays hot for long enough to kill anything reliably, so the rule is: compost soft foliage disease you would tolerate again, and keep out anything that forms a resting body in the soil. Never compost clubroot, white rot, honey fungus, blight tubers, or anything virused. Council green waste is composted hot and takes most of it.

The question behind this is really about survival structures. Some pathogens exist only as delicate spores on living tissue and die when the tissue rots. Others produce hard resting bodies specifically designed to sit in soil for years, and a cool compost heap is a comfortable place to wait.

Step by step

  1. Understand what your heap actually does.A well-managed hot heap can exceed 60°C in the middle for several days, which kills most pathogens in that part of the heap. A typical garden bin sits at ambient temperature at the edges. Since nothing is ever turned into the exact centre and left there, assume nothing has been sterilised.
  2. Keep out anything that makes a resting body.Clubroot on brassica roots, white rot on onion and garlic roots, sclerotinia with its hard black grains, and honey fungus. These survive in soil for years by design, and spreading the compost distributes them across the garden.
  3. Keep out potato and tomato blight tubers and stems.Blight itself does not overwinter on dead foliage in the UK, but volunteer tubers in a heap sprout and become the source of next year's outbreak. Bin every tuber; the haulm is less of a risk but is not worth the argument.
  4. Keep out anything virused.Some viruses survive in plant debris and soil, and there is no cure for any of them. A plant removed for virus should go to council green waste or be burnt, along with the compost from its pot.
  5. Keep out persistent perennial weed roots and seeding weeds.Not a disease, but the same logic — bindweed, couch, ground elder and mare's tail regrow from fragments, and a cool heap is a propagation unit.
  6. Compost ordinary leaf disease with a clear conscience.Powdery mildew, rust, black spot and most leaf spots are already everywhere in the air and on fallen leaves. Adding rose leaves to a heap does not measurably change how much black spot you get; keeping the ground clear beneath the rose does.
  7. Send the doubtful category to council green waste.Municipal composting runs at high temperature under a regulated regime and destroys far more than a garden heap. It is the correct destination for anything you are unsure about, and it is not cheating.
  8. Burn only where you are allowed to and it is genuinely necessary.Bonfires are subject to nuisance rules and there may be local restrictions; check with your council. For most householders green waste collection has replaced burning entirely.

Tips

  • If you want a heap that genuinely kills disease, it has to be built in one go, in volume, with a balance of green and brown material, and turned so the outside goes to the middle. Adding a bucket a week never achieves it.
  • Bagged compost bought in is a separate risk — the aminopyralid problem comes in via manure and grass, not via disease.
  • Diseased material that has been through a council system and come back as compost is safe. That is what the temperature regime is for.
  • Leaves from a tree with a leaf-specific disease can be composted separately as leafmould in a bag, which takes two years — long enough that most leaf pathogens are gone.

Common mistakes

  • Composting brassica roots with clubroot galls — Clubroot resting spores survive in soil for up to twenty years. Spreading that compost commits the whole garden to the problem for a generation.
  • Assuming a hot heap sterilises everything in it — Only the centre reaches temperature, and only while it is active. The outer 15cm of any bin is never hot.
  • Composting a whole plant that died of something you never identified — You are gambling on the one category that matters. If you do not know what killed it, it goes in the green bin.

Questions people ask

What about diseased material in a wormery or bokashi?

Neither reaches a killing temperature. Bokashi ferments and the residue still needs burying or composting, so treat both as cold systems and apply the same exclusions.

Can I compost plants that had aphids or caterpillars?

Yes, freely. Pests are not the problem — they leave or die, and the material is fine. The exclusions are all about pathogens with resting stages.

What about the compost from a pot where the plant died of root rot?

Spread it thinly on an ornamental bed rather than reusing it for pots, or bin it. Water moulds persist in it, and it will be reused in exactly the conditions they need.
