Which plant problems spread to my other plants?

A sorted list of what genuinely travels between plants and how, so you know which problems need isolating and which can be dealt with at leisure.

Short answer

Sap-sucking pests, fungal spores and viruses spread; nutrient problems, watering damage, scorch and frost do not. The practical dividing line is whether the cause is alive. If it is alive, ask how it travels — walking, flying, splashing water, on your hands, or in the soil — and break that route.

Most gardeners either panic about everything or worry about nothing. Sorting problems by whether they can move, and by how, converts a vague anxiety into a short list of actions, most of which are free.

Step by step

  1. First, separate living causes from damage.Frost, wind, scorch, drought, waterlogging, fertiliser burn, mechanical damage and nutrient shortage cannot spread to anything, no matter how dramatic they look. They can affect several plants at once because the weather did, which is not the same as spreading.
  2. Treat the walkers as urgent between touching plants.Mealybug, scale crawlers, red spider mite and aphids all move plant to plant on contact. Two pots whose leaves touch are one plant as far as they are concerned. Separating pots by a hand's width is a real control measure.
  3. Treat the fliers as a garden-wide issue.Whitefly, winged aphids, thrips, sawflies, moths and vine weevil adults move wherever they like. Isolation does not contain them, so the response is treatment, barriers such as fine mesh, and encouraging predators.
  4. Understand which diseases travel in splashing water.Black spot, most leaf spots, bacterial diseases, blight and downy mildew all spread when rain or a watering can throws infected soil and leaf debris upwards onto foliage. Mulching, watering at the base and spacing plants breaks that route almost entirely.
  5. Understand which travel in air.Powdery mildew, rust and grey mould release spores that drift. You cannot exclude them from a garden. What you can change is whether conditions suit them: airflow, spacing, not wetting foliage, keeping plants unstressed, and clearing infected material promptly.
  6. Know the ones that live in the soil and stay.Clubroot, onion white rot, honey fungus and several wilts persist in soil for years and spread on boots, tools and moved soil. These are the ones where hygiene between areas of the garden genuinely matters, and where the answer is usually to change what you grow there.
  7. Treat virus as the one with no route back.It spreads by aphids and thrips, by sap on hands and secateurs, and by propagation. There is no cure at any stage, so the whole response is prevention and removal.
  8. Break the specific route rather than reaching for a spray.Space and airflow for the airborne ones. Mulch and base watering for the splashers. Physical separation for the walkers. Mesh for the fliers. Clean boots and tools for the soil-borne ones. Each one is cheap and each one is more effective than a generic treatment.

Tips

  • A plant that is stressed is far more likely to be colonised, so watering and position are pest control as much as any product is.
  • Indoors, everything spreads faster: warm, still, no predators, plants close together. Indoor isolation is worth much more than outdoor isolation.
  • Buy plants in the knowledge that new arrivals are the commonest introduction route for anything that walks.
  • Clearing fallen leaves under a plant that had a leaf disease is one of the highest-value ten minutes in the gardening year.

Common mistakes

  • Isolating a plant with a nutrient or watering problem — It cannot spread. The time is better spent on the actual cause, and moving a stressed plant adds a second stress.
  • Watering over the top of plants with a leaf disease — It is the exact mechanism by which the disease reaches the leaves that are still clean.
  • Moving soil or compost from an area with clubroot or white rot — That is how a problem confined to one bed reaches the whole vegetable garden, and it does not come back.

Questions people ask

Can a houseplant pest move to my garden plants?

Yes, and it does — a plant put outside for the summer with mealybug or scale seeds them into whatever it stands near. It also works the other way, which is the risk with bringing pots indoors for winter.

Does one mildewed plant infect all the others?

Powdery mildews are quite host-specific, so the mildew on your courgettes is generally not the one that would affect your roses. Conditions rather than proximity are what produce a mildew year.

Should I remove a plant that keeps getting the same disease?

If it has needed treating every year for several years, yes — replace it with a resistant variety or a different plant. A permanently infected plant is also a permanent source for its neighbours.
