What is a bypass valve and why does my heating system need one?
The small loop or valve that stops a boiler pumping against a shut system, why it exists, and what happens when TRVs are fitted without one.

Short answer
A bypass is a path that lets water keep circulating when all the radiator valves have shut. Without it the pump has nowhere to push, the boiler overheats and cycles, and the pump wears out. It is either an automatic bypass valve on the pipework, or one radiator deliberately left without a TRV.
This is a small component with a large job, and it explains a symptom that otherwise makes no sense: a boiler that overheats and shuts down precisely when the house is warm and comfortable. When every TRV in the house has satisfied and every zone valve has closed, the water in a heating circuit has nowhere left to go. The bypass is what stops that from being a problem.

Step by step
- Understand the situation it protects against.The pump keeps running while the boiler finishes its cycle and dissipates residual heat. If every valve in the system has closed at once, there is no path. The pump churns, the boiler's heat exchanger has nothing to give its heat to, and it overheats and locks out.
- Recognise the automatic bypass valve.A small brass or chrome valve on a short pipe connecting the flow to the return, usually near the boiler or the pump. It is spring loaded and stays shut in normal running, opening only when the pressure difference across it rises — which is exactly what happens when the circuit closes up.
- Recognise the radiator bypass.The alternative approach: one radiator, usually in the hall or the bathroom, is deliberately fitted without a TRV so it can never close. Sometimes it is a towel rail. That radiator is the permanent open path, which is why the room thermostat's radiator is usually the one chosen.
- Find out which yours has.Look for a small valve on a pipe linking flow and return near the boiler. Then look for a radiator without a TRV. Most systems have one or the other; some modern boilers have an internal bypass built in and need neither.
- Understand what breaks it.Fitting TRVs to every radiator in a house whose bypass was a single unvalved radiator removes the bypass without anybody realising. Boxing in or removing the bypass radiator does the same. So does an automatic bypass valve that has seized shut.
- Recognise the symptoms of a missing bypass.The boiler cycles rapidly and cuts out on overheat once the house is up to temperature. Kettling that appears only at the end of a heating cycle. A pump that is noisy when everything is satisfied. Radiators that go hot briefly after the heating has switched off.
- Check before adding TRVs.If you are fitting thermostatic valves to more radiators, establish whether one of them is the bypass. If it is, either leave that one alone or have an automatic bypass valve fitted at the same time. This is a genuinely common mistake.
- Leave the setting to an engineer.An automatic bypass valve has an adjustable opening pressure, set at commissioning to match the pump and the system. Turning it up or down affects circulation to the whole house and is a commissioning task.
Tips
- If you are having TRVs fitted, ask directly: 'which radiator is my bypass, and will it still be one afterwards?' A good installer will already have thought about it.
- The room thermostat's own radiator is usually the one deliberately left without a TRV, for two separate reasons — bypass, and so that two thermostats do not fight over the same room.
- Do not close a lockshield fully on a bypass radiator to make it cooler. That defeats the purpose. Adjust the room instead.
- Automatic bypass valves can seize shut after years of not moving. Worth mentioning at a service if the symptoms fit.
If it doesn't work
Boiler cuts out on overheat once the house is warm
Cause: Every valve has closed and there is no bypass path — Fix: Check whether a bypass radiator has recently had a TRV fitted or been removed. If so, an automatic bypass valve is the remedy.
Kettling at the end of a heating cycle only
Cause: Residual heat with no circulation to carry it away — Fix: Points at the bypass rather than at scale. Worth checking before agreeing to a descaling job.
Hall radiator gets hot even with the heating satisfied
Cause: That is the bypass radiator working as designed — Fix: Not a fault. It is deliberately unvalved and takes the pump overrun. Leave it as it is.
System got noisy after new TRVs were fitted throughout
Cause: The bypass has been valved off — Fix: Ask the installer which bypass arrangement the system now has. An automatic bypass valve is a small addition.
Questions people ask
Do modern boilers still need one?
Many modern boilers have an internal bypass and manufacturers state whether an external one is required — it is in the installation manual and it is not optional guidance. Some explicitly require an automatic bypass valve for warranty purposes.
Can I fit an automatic bypass valve myself?
It is a plumbing job cutting into the flow and return near the boiler, and it has to be set correctly afterwards. That is heating engineer work, and the setting matters as much as the fitting.
Is a bypass wasting heat?
Barely. It only opens when the system has closed up, and it circulates water that is already hot within the house. The alternative is a boiler shutting down on overheat, which wastes far more.
